  • Polymers, particularly plastics, have been widely seen as an existential risk to the environment due to their contribution to pollution, carbon emissions and climate change. Many argue that it is possible to substantially ease the threat of plastics by engaging the public in reducing their use in day-to-day life and implementing efficient domestic waste management strategies. On the other hand, polymers and plastics in building and construction are considerably less problematic, if not attractive. In fact, the applications of polymers in construction have been continuously expanding. This is partly due to the developments made in this area being implemented within a sustainable development strategy. In this paper, the main applications of polymers in construction have been revisited and an overview of the research topics in each application has been briefly presented.

  • Nanotechnology has beenrapidly evolved from passive nanostructures where nanostructures with steadystructures and functions often used as parts of a product to activenanostructures which change their properties during use. Startingaround 2010, it is anticipated that researchers will cultivate expertise withsystems of nanostructures, directing large numbers of intricate components tospecified needs. One dimensional (1-D) nanostructures suchas nanowires and nanotubes are extremely attractive building blocks for nextgeneration devices because of their high surface to volume ratio and uniquesize dependent properties. In addition, their extremely high aspectratio offers researchers the potentials to build axial or radialheterostructures to integrate multiple functionality from intrinsic propertiesof the material or through interfacial phenomena. Spatialmanipulation and the ability to assemble and position nanostuructures in acontrolled matter so they are registered to define spaces is also a criticalstep toward scalable integration in high density nanodevices. In thispresentation, a generalized template directed electrodeposition with ancillaryassembly, contact will be presented to synthesize axial and radialheterostructures in cost-effective matter and these individual nanostructureswill be applied to spintronics, gas and biological sensors and thermoelectrics.

  • The structure of Tower Palace III Sports Center building was designed as concrete Filled Steel Tube(CFT) Column and the filled-in concrete was designed as high compressive strength of 500kgf/$m_2$. The self compacting concrete(SCC, non-vibrating concrete) with 65$\pm$5cm flow must be applied to this case for filling the CFT by injecting the concrete from the column bottom. Laboratory tests and pilot productions of batcher plant were performed for optimum mix design and the full scale Mock-Up test was performed to check the appicability of the construction method. As a result, we observed that good quality SCC and the pressure change of concrete pump normally used domestically. Based on these results, we have constructed 20-40m height CFT columns successfully.

  • Geothermal heat pumps are known as the most efficient and environment-friendly heating and cooling system, and are also gaining acceptance in buildings. Building energy simulation program, EnergyPlus is used to calculate the energy consumption of residential buildings. This simulated energy consumption is essential for accurate economic analysis. Residential buildings with geothermal heat pumps have complex energy price structure. Electricity rates for residential buildings increase rapidly as the monthly use increases. This complex energy price structure makes the economic analysis complicated. The purpose of this study is to conduct economic comparison of residential geothermal heat pumps and provide a feasible approach in finding their economically feasible capacity.

  • Today's environment of enterprise is changing. They have to face customers' demands with the right product, the right service and supply them at the right time. And aIso cut down logistics and inventory cost and bring up the Profit as much as they can. This means the change of putting enterprise first in importance to putting customer first in importance. therefore to correspond to customer's demand, shorting lead time is becoming a essential condition. The answer to this changes of environment is supply chain management In this study, we use Goldratt's drum-buffer-rope scheduling in between manufacturer and supplier. And when shortage of inventory occur, search for the supply chain's CCR. Pressing CCR for more production, and supply Inventory from logistic center to guide for inventory buffing. using logistic warehouse between manufacturer and supplier, can execute function of buffer.

  • Background and objective: Vertical smart farm (VSF) is an alternative that contributes to solving various problems such as climate change and food shortage. This study focused on the types and awareness of VSF to introduce and diffuse VSF. We aimed to investigate the types of VSF and citizens' awareness on VSF. We analyzed 1) where the smart farm technology could be implemented on a building; 2) what citizens think about VSF; and 3) suggested what is most necessary for the introduction and diffusion of VSF in the future based on citizens' perception. Methods: VSF types were investigated through case studies on VSF in Korea and overseas. Citizens' perception on VSF was investigated through a questionnaire survey. A statistical analysis was conducted with the survey results for implications of the introduction and diffusion of VSF. Results: Four types of VSF were derived: rooftop farms, facade farms, indoor farms, and farms using the whole building. The survey showed that 29.2%, 27.8%, and 22.2% of respondents knew well about urban agriculture, smart farms, and vertical smart farms, respectively. Respondents answered that improving awareness is the most important factor to introduce VSF. According to the statistical analysis, it was determined that education and promotion of the necessity of VSF would be important to diffuse the VSF. Conclusion: VSF can be a solution to a variety of problems we face. The results of this study suggest a direction for the introduction and diffusion of VSF. In order to introduce VSF in the future, additional studies must be conducted on the legal system.

  • Energy efficiency is vital to improve energy security, environmental and social sustainability, and economic performance. Improved energy efficiency also mitigates climate change by lowering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Buildings are the single largest industrial consumer of energy and are therefore key to understanding and analyzing energy consumption patterns and the opportunities for saving energy at the district level in urban environments. This study focused on two representative boroughs in the major metropolitan area of Seoul, South Korea as a case study: Gandong-gu, a typical residential district, and Jung-gu, a typical commercial district. The sources of the energy supplied to the boroughs were determined and consumption patterns in different industry sectors in Seoul used to identify current patterns of energy consumption. The study analyzed the energy consumption patterns for five different building categories and four different sectors in the building using a bottom-up energy modeling approach. Electricity and gas consumption patterns were recorded for different building categories and monthly ambient temperatures in the two boroughs. Finally, a logarithmic equation was developed to describe the correlation between commercial activity and cooling energy intensity in Jung-gu, the commercial district. Based on these results, recommendations are made regarding the current energy consumption patterns at the district level and government energy policies are suggested to reduce energy consumption and, hence, greenhouse gas emissions, in both commercial and residential buildings.
