  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the application of nano-structured alumina coating to the surface of Y-TZP could enhance the bond strength with resin cement. Materials and methods: A total of 80 zirconia plates were prepared and divided into four groups. : 1) airborne particle abrasion treatment (A) : 2) Rocatec treatment after airborne particle abrasion (R) : 3) nano-structured alumina coating treatment after polishing (PC) and 4) nano-structured alumina coating after airborne particle abrasion (AC). Alumina coating was formed by the hydrolysis of aluminium nitride (AlN) powder and heat treatment at $900^{\circ}C$. Coating patterns were observed with FE-SEM. Resin block was bonded to treated zirconia ceramics using resin cement. The shear bond strengths were measured before and after thermocycling. Results: The FE-SEM images show a dense and uniform nano-structured alumina coating structure, which enhances shear bond strength by increasing micro mechanical interlocking to resin cement. PC and AC groups showed higher shear bond strengths than A and R groups before and after thermocycling. A and R groups displayed significant drops in shear bond strength after thermocycling. However, PC and AC groups did not show any meaningful decreases in shear bond strength after thermocycling. Conclusion: Treatment of Y-TZP ceramics with nano-structured alumina coating could significantly increase their shear bond strength.

  • Purpose: This study focused on achieving desired shades by combining zirconia core with different thickness porcelain in order to make dental prostheses effectively. Methods: White and colored $LAVA^{TM}$ All Ceramic (3M-ESPE, Seefeld, Germany), and Zirkonzahn (Bruneck, Italy) Trans and prettau were used to have Zirconia. LAVATM Ceram (3M-ESPE, Germany) and ICE (Zirkonzahn, Italy) powder were used to have the porcelain. We made quadrilateral specimen of thickness 0.3mm, 0.5mm, 0.7mm and diameter 10 to use zirconia ceramics system of 2 kinds that color tone reappearance way is different and produced total 120 specimens to 4 experimental groups. We used Spectrophotometer to analyze color tone. Data's value getting by dispersal colorimetry period found L*, a*, b* value using Excel program. We used one-way ANOVA to use SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Results: All L*, a*, b* indexes of zirconia core and porcelain veneer in LAVA group and Zirkonzahn group were different. When you combine the white zirconia core of LAVA group with a porcelain veneer, the thickness of the porcelain must be more than 0.5mm to meet the standard target. When all the colored zirconia cores of LAVA group were combined with porcelain veneers, there was no significant difference from the standard target. When the zirconia cores of Zirkonzahn group are combined with porcelain veneers, the thinner thicknesses were closer to the standard tab than thicker thicknesses; however, there was a significant difference in all combinations, with Delta E* value indicating more than 3. Conclusion: When it comes to colored zirconia, which is the most popular, the thicknesses of both a core and a dentin veneer must be more than 0.3mm to get an appropriate shade. There is more possibility to get desirable shades when the thicknesses of a white core are thinner; however, they would be vulnerable to the environment and lose their color. When combine a zirconia core with a dentin veneer, using Zirkonzahn group needs more considerations in order to meet the standard target.

  • PTC thermistor are characterized by an increase in the electrical resistance with temperature. The PTC materials of middle Curie point were produced or that of high Curie point (above $200^{\circ}C$), it was determined that compositional modifications of $Pb^{2+}$ for $Ba^{2+}$ produce change sin the Curie point to higher temperature. PTC ceramic materials with the Curie point above $120^{\circ}C$ were prepared by adding $PbTiO_3$, PbO or $Pb_3O_4$ into $BaTiO_3$. Thereby, adding $Pb^{2+}$ into $BaTiO_3$-based PTC material to improve Tc was studied broadly, however, weal know that PbO was poisonous and prone to volatilize, then to pollute the circumstance and hurt to people, so we should dope other innocuous additives instead of lead to increase Tc of composite PTC material. In order to prepare lead-free $BaTiO_3$-based PTC with middle Curie point, the incorporation on $Bi_{1/2}Na_{1/2}TiO_3$ into $BaTiO_3$-based ceramics was investigated on samples containing 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 50mol% of $Bi_{1/2}Na_{1/2}TiO_3$. $Bi_{1/2}Na_{1/2}TiO_3$ was compounded as standby material by conventional solid-state reaction technique. The starting materials were $Bi_{1/2}Na_{1/2}TiO_3$, $BaCO_3$, $TiO_2$ and $Y_2O_3$ powder, and using solid-state reaction method, too. The microstructures of samples were investigated by SEM, DSC, XRD and dielectric properties. Phase composition and lattice parameters were investigated by X-ray diffraction.

  • This study investigated the hydrogen storage properties of Zr-Based $AB_{2-x}M_x$ metal hybride made by HCS (Hydriding Combustion Synthesis). The materials were prepared by HCS 80 wt% $AB_2$-15 wt% Mg-5 wt% Mm, HCS 80 wt% $AB_2$-20 wt% Mg and pure Zr-Based $AB_2$, These materials were activated at 298 K under 20 bar. Both HCS 80 wt% $AB_2$-20 wt% Mg and HCS 80 wt% $AB_2$-15 wt% Mg-5 wt% Mm were absorbed within 1 minute. In the case of the $AB_2$, it was perfectly absorbed within 6 minutes. Then, the materials were evaluated to obtain P-C-T (Pressure-Composition-Temperature) curves at 298K. As a result, the hydrogen storage capacity of HCS 80 wt% $AB_2$-20 wt% Mg, HCS 80 wt% $AB_2$-15 wt% Mg-5 wt% Mm and pure Zr-Based $AB_2$ were determined to be 1.2, 1.6 and 1.74 wt%, respectively. The activation energy and rate controlling step were calculated by the Johnson-Mehl Avrami equation. The activation energies of HCS 80 wt% $AB_2$-20 wt% Mg, HCS 80 wt% $AB_2$-15 wt% Mg-5 wt% Mm and pure Zr-Based $AB_2$ were 26.91, 20.45, and 60.41 kJ/mol, respectively. Also, the values of ${\eta}$ in the Johnson-Mehl Avrami equation for HCS 80 wt% $AB_2$-20 wt% Mg, HCS 80 wt% $AB_2$-15 wt% Mg-5 wt% Mm and pure Zr-Based $AB_2$ are 0.60, 0.51, and 0.44. So, the rate controlling steps which indicate hydrogen storage mechanism are an one dimensional diffusion process.

  • Black dross is a dark gray dross generated during the aluminum recycling process that uses flux, and contains NaCl, KCl, Al2O3, MgO, etc. Black dross is separated into soluble substances (NaCl, KCl) and insoluble substances (Al2O4, MgO) through the dissolution process. Soluble materials can be reused as salt flux, and Al2O3 and MgO can be upcycled to various ceramic materials through the synthesis process. In this study, Mayenite was synthesized using Al2O3 and MgO recovered from black dross, and the synthesis was performed according to the mixing ratio and reaction temperature. It was confirmed that when Mayenite was synthesized using black dross (spinel) and CaCO3, precursors were changed to Mg0.4Al2.4O4 and CaO at 700 ℃, and to Ca12Al14O33 (Mayenite) after 800 ℃. In the mixing conditions experiment, it was confirmed that the Mayenite XRD peak increased with increase of the CaCO3 content, and the Mg0.4Al2.4O4 XRD peak decreased. As a result of the BET analysis of the synthesized powder, the surface area decreased as the fine particles were grown and agglomerated in the process of generating mayenite.

  • The crystal structure, grain growth behavior, and dielectric properties of BaTiO3 have been studied with the addition of Dy2O3. The powders were synthesized at ratios of (100-x)BaTiO3-xDy2O3 (mol%, x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0) by a conventional solid-state synthesis, and the powder compacts were sintered at 1250℃ for 2 hours in air. As the amount of added Dy2O3 was increased, the crystal structure of the sintered samples changed from a tetragonal to a pseudo-cubic structure, and the tetragonality decreased. In addition, a secondary phase of Ba12Dy4.67Ti8O35 appeared when Dy2O3 was added. The average grain size after sintering decreased and abnormal grains appeared as the amount of Dy2O3 increased. It can be explained that the grain growth behavior of the Dy2O3 added-BaTiO3 occurs due to the two-dimensional nucleation and growth, and is governed by the interface reaction. Further, the correlation between crystal structure, microstructure, and dielectric properties was discussed.

  • Multilayered actuators using Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PIN-PT) crystals have demonstrated excellent properties, but are costly and lack mechanical strength. Textured PMN-PIN-PT ceramics exhibit robust mechanical strength and comparable properties to their single crystals form. However, the development of multilayered actuators using textured PMN-PIN-PT ceramics has not been achieved until now. This study presents the development of a multilayered actuator using textured 0.37PMN-0.29PIN-0.34PT ceramics with an Ag0.9/Pd0.1 inner electrode, co-fired at 950℃. A random 0.37PMN-0.29PIN-0.34PT ceramics multilayered actuator was also developed for comparison. The multilayered actuator consisted of 9 ceramic layers (36 ㎛ thickness) with an overall actuator thickness of 0.401 mm. The textured and random 0.37PMN-0.29PIN-0.34PT ceramics-based multilayered actuators achieved displacements of 0.61 ㎛ (0.15% strain) and 0.23 ㎛ (0.057% strain) at a low applied peak voltage of 100 V. These results suggest that the developed multilayered actuator using high-performance textured 0.37PMN-0.29PIN-0.34PT ceramics has the potential to replace expensive single crystal-based actuators cost-effectively.

  • ZrO2 phase transformations depending on the type and amount of dopants and the sintering temperatures were studied for the 2 components (CaO-, Y2O3-, MgO-ZrO2) and the 3 components(MgO-ZrO2-Al2O3)ZrO2 powder by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. In the CaO- and Y2O3-ZrO2 systems, as the CaO and Y2O3 contents increased to 6~15mol% and 3~15mol% respectively, we were not able to identify between tetragonal and cubic in the X-ray diffraction patterns. On the other hand, all Raman modes shifted to lower wavenumbers, decreasing in intensity and the number of bands, markedly. These phenomena were caused by tetragonallongrightarrowcubic phase transformation and interpreted by the breakdown of the wave vector selection rule(k=0) and the structural disorder associated with the formation of oxygen sublattice which was caused by the substitution between Zr4+ ion and Ca2+ or Y3+ ion in ZrO2 matrix. The monoclinic to cubic phase transformation occurred in 10mol% MgO-ZrO2 system. As the Al2O3 content increased from 0 to 20mol% in the MgO-ZrO2-Al2O3 systems, cubic phase transformed to monoclinic phase, this is because the MgO didn't play a role in a stabilizer because of the formation of the spinel(MgAl2O4) by the reaction between MgO and Al2O3, Also, the ZrO2 phase transformation was explained by the change of it's lattice parameters depending on the type and amount of dopants. Namely, as the amount of dopant increased to 10~13mol%, the axial ra-tio c/a came close to unity with increasing the lattice parameter a and decreasing the lattice parameter c. At that time, the tetragonallongrightarrowcubic phase transformation occurred.

  • The single crystal of the $LiTaO_3$has large electro-optic effects, so it is applied to optical switch, acousto-optic deflector, and optical memory device as hologram using photorefractive effect. In this study, optic-grade undoped $LiTaO_3$and Fe:LiTaO$LiTaO_3$single crystals were grown by the Czochralski method and optical transmission and absorption spectrums were measured in the wavelength of UV-VIS range. The curie temperature was determined with DSC and by measuring capacitance for the grown undoped crystal and ceramic powder samples of various Li/Ta ratio. In case of having a 48.6 mol% $Li_2O$ as a starting Li/Ta ratio, the results of concentration variations were below 0.01 mol% $Li_2O$ all over the crystal, so it was confirmed that $LiTaO_3$single crystals were grown under congruent melting composition having optical homogeneity. The curie temperature of the Fe:$LiTaO_3$crystal was increased with increased with increased doped Fe concentrations;by the ratio of $7.5^{\circ}C$ increase per Fe 0.1 wt%. Also, the optical transmittance was about 78 %, which was sufficient for optical device.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of chromium chloride addition on coloration, mechanical property and microstructure of 3Y-TZP. Materials and methods: Chromium chloride was weighed as 0.06, 0.12, and 0.25 wt% and each measured amount was dissolved in alcohol. $ZrO_2$ powder was mixed with each of the individual slurry to prepare chromium doped zirconia specimen. The color, physical properties and microstructure were observed after the zirconia specimen were sintered at $1450^{\circ}C$. In order to evaluate the color, spectrophotometer was used to analyze the value of $L^*$, $C^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$, after placing the specimen on a white plate, and measured according to the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) standard, Illuminant D65 and SCE system. The density was measured in the Archimedes method, while microstructures were evaluated by using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and XRD. Fracture toughness was calculated Vickers indentation method and indentation size was measured by using the optical microscope. The data were analyzed with 1-way ANOVA test (${\alpha}$ = 0.05). The Tukey multiple comparison test was used for post hocanalysis. Results: 1. Chromium chloride rendered zirconia a brownish color. While chromium chloride content was increased, the color of zirconia was changed from brownish to brownish-red. 2. Chromium chloride content was increased; density of the specimen was decreased. 3. More chromium chloride in the ratio showed increase size of grains. 4. But the addition of chromium chloride did not affect the crystal phase of zirconia, and all specimens showed tetragonal phase. 5. The chromium chloride in zirconia did not showed statistically significant difference in fracture toughness, but addition of 0.25 wt% showed a statistically significant difference (P<.05). Conclusion: Based on the above results, this study suggests that chromium chlorides can make colored zirconia while adding in a liquid form. The new colored zirconia showed a slight difference in color to that of the natural tooth, nevertheless this material can be used as an all ceramic core material.
