SiC has been under investigation as a potential cladding for LWR fuel, due to its high melting point and drastically reduced chemical reactivity with liquid water, and steam at high temperatures. As SiC is a brittle material its behavior during the reflood phase of a Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA) is another important aspect of SiC that must be examined as part of the feasibility assessment for its application to LWR fuel rods. In this study, an experimental assessment of thermal shock performance of a monolithic alpha phase SiC tube was conducted by quenching the material from high temperature (up to $1200^{\circ}C$) into room temperature water. Post-quenching assessment was carried out by a Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) image analysis to characterize fractures in the material. This paper assesses the effects of pre-existing pores on SiC cladding brittle fracture and crack development/propagation during the reflood phase. Proper extension of these guidelines to an SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composite (CMC) cladding design is discussed.

The fatigue has been considered the most failure mode of metal, ceramic, and composite materials. In this paper, numerical experiments to asses the usefulness of two Dixon's methods(small and large samples) and 14 S-N methods on assumptions of lognormal fatigue limit distribution under RFL(Random Fatigue Limit) model are conducted for staircase(or up-and-down) test and compared by MSE(Mean Squared Error) and bias for estimates of mean log-fatigue limit. Also, guidelines for staircase test plans to choose initial stress level and step size are recommended from numerical experiments including sensitivity analyses. In addition, the parametric bootstrap method to construct a confidence interval for the mean of log-fatigue limit by the percentile method using a transition probability matrix of Markov chain is presented and illustrated with an example.
For the development of new material used bentonite in ceramic/organic material composite, ABS(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) material was used as a matrix polymer and a series of bentonite was blended together. This bentonite, filler like talc or mica for plastic material, was used since natural bentonite(Ca type) is easily obtainable in Korea, Na-bentonite changed from natural bentonite by $Na_2CO_3$ based on the specified compositions, changes in the static and dynamic mechanical properties. It was discovered that the increased content of natural and Na- bentonite results in higher modulus with reduced impact strength. And Rockwell hardness was constant. And Na- bentonite filled polymer showed improvement in impact strength and lower in modulus as the natural bentonite filled polymer. The storage modulus(E') of Na- bentonite filled ABS resin was higher than that of Ca- bentonite filled ABS resin, while higher temperature, storage modulus(E') decreased. At higher frequency, tan ${\delta}$ peak was shifted at high temperature.
The paper addresses contribution to the modeling and optimization of major machinability parameters (cutting force, surface roughness, and tool wear) in finish dry hard turning (FDHT) for machinability evaluation of hardened AISI grade die steel D3 with PVD-TiN coated (Al2O3-TiCN) mixed ceramic tool insert. The turning trials are performed based on Taguchi's L18 orthogonal array design of experiments for the development of regression model as well as adequate model prediction by considering tool approach angle, nose radius, cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut as major machining parameters. The models or correlations are developed by employing multiple regression analysis (MRA). In addition, statistical technique (response surface methodology) followed by computational approaches (genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization) have been employed for multiple response optimization. Thereafter, the effectiveness of proposed three (RSM, GA, PSO) optimization techniques are evaluated by confirmation test and subsequently the best optimization results have been used for estimation of energy consumption which includes savings of carbon footprint towards green machining and for tool life estimation followed by cost analysis to justify the economic feasibility of PVD-TiN coated Al2O3+TiCN mixed ceramic tool in FDHT operation. Finally, estimation of energy savings, economic analysis, and sustainability assessment are performed by employing carbon footprint analysis, Gilbert approach, and Pugh matrix, respectively. Novelty aspects, the present work: (i) contributes to practical industrial application of finish hard turning for the shaft and die makers to select the optimum cutting conditions in a range of hardness of 45-60 HRC, (ii) demonstrates the replacement of expensive, time-consuming conventional cylindrical grinding process and proposes the alternative of costlier CBN tool by utilizing ceramic tool in hard turning processes considering technological, economical and ecological aspects, which are helpful and efficient from industrial point of view, (iii) provides environment friendliness, cleaner production for machining of hardened steels, (iv) helps to improve the desirable machinability characteristics, and (v) serves as a knowledge for the development of a common language for sustainable manufacturing in both research field and industrial practice.
Microstructures and mechanical properties of SPSed monolithic HAp, HAp-Ag, and HAp-ZrO$_2$sintered bodies were investigated by the XRD, SEM, and TEM techniques. The nano-sized HAp powders were successfully synthesized by precipitation of Ca(NO$_3$)$_2$4$H_2O$ and (NH$_4$)HPO$_4$solution. In the HAp-Ag composite, the shrinkage cavities were observed at the interfaces between HAp and large sized Ag particles due to the mismatch of their thermal expansion coefficients. However, no found the defect at the interfaces between HAp and fine-sized Ag particles. In the HAp-ZrO$_2$composite. nano-sized ZrO$_2$particles were almost dispersed at the grain boundaries of HAp phase. The fracture toughness of HAp-Ag and HAp-ZrO$_2$ composites were increased due to the plastic deformation and phase transformation mechanisms of the dispersed fine Ag and ZrO$_2$phase in the HAp matrix, respectively.

Analysis has been performed for the penetration of a long-rod into MMC/Ceramic layered armour system with several shot test and a series of simulations. Two types of MMC plate have been fabricated by a liquid pressing method; A356/45%vol.%SiCp with a uniform distribution of SiC particle and Al7075/45%vol.B4Cp with B4C particle. The mechanical properties were measured with the high-speed split Hopkins bar test, hardness test and compression test. The popular Simplified Johnson-Cook model was adopted to represent the material characteristics for FEM simulations. The performance of the MMC applied armour system has been made by comparing with the semi-infinite mild steel target using the depth of penetration(DOP). The results show that placing ceramic front layer provides a certain gain in protection, and that placing another ductile front layer provides a further gain. The application of MMC is found to be attractive.

We investigated the effect of $Bi_{1/2}(Na_{0.82}K_{0.18})_{1/2}TiO_3$ (BNKT) modification on the ferroelectric and electric-field-induced strain (EFIS) properties of lead-free $0.97Bi_{1/2}(Na_{0.82}K_{0.18})_{1/2}TiO_3-0.03LaFeO_3$ (BNKTLF) ceramics as a function of BNKT content (x= 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5, and 1). BNKT-modified BNKTLF powders were synthesized using a conventional solid-state reaction method. As the BNKT content x increased from 0 to 1 the normalized electric-field-induced strain ($S_{max}/E_{max}$) was observed to increase at relatively low fields, i.e., below the poling field. Moreover, BNKTLF-30BNKT showed about 460 pm/V as low as at 3 kV/mm, which is a considerably high value among the lead-free systems reported so far. Consequently, it was confirmed that ceramic-ceramic composite, a mixture of an ergodic relaxor matrix and embedded ferroelectric seeds, is a salient way to make lead-free piezoelectrics practical with enhanced EFIS at low field as well as less hysterical.
Nuclear fuel cladding used in a nuclear power plant must possess superior oxidation resistance in the coolant atmosphere of high temperature/high pressure. However, as was the case for the critical LOCA (loss-of-coolant accident) accident that took place in the Fukushima disaster, there is a risk of hydrogen explosion when the nuclear fuel cladding and steam reacts dramatically to cause a rapid high-temperature oxidation accompanied by generation of a huge amount of hydrogen. Hence, an active search is ongoing for an alternative material to be used for manufacturing of nuclear fuel cladding. Studies are currently aimed at improving the safety of this cladding. In particular, ceramic-based nuclear fuel cladding, such as SiC, is receiving much attention due to the excellent radiation resistance, high strength, chemical durability against oxidation and corrosion, and excellent thermal conduction of ceramics. In the present study, cladding with $SiC_f/SiC$ protective films was fabricated using a process that forms a matrix phase by polymer impregnation of polycarbosilane (PCS) after filament-winding the SiC fiber onto an existing Zry-4 cladding tube. It is analyzed the oxidation and microstructure of the metal cladding with $SiC_f/SiC$ composite protective films using a drop tube furnace for thermal shock test.
The composites were fabricated by adding 30, 35, 40, 45[vol.%] Zirconium Diboride(hereafter, $ZrB_2$) powders as a second phase to Silicon Carbide(hereafter, SiC) matrix. The physical, mechanical and electrical properties of electroconductive SiC ceramic composites by Spark Plasma Sintering(hereafter, SPS) were examined. Reactions between $\beta$-SiC and $ZrB_2$ were not observed in the XRD analysis. The relative density of SiC+30[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+35[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+40[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ and SiC+45[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composites are 88.64[%], 76.80[%], 79.09[%] and 88.12[%], respectively. The XRD phase analysis of the electroconductive SiC ceramic composites reveals high of SiC and $ZrB_2$ and low of $ZrO_2$ phase. The electrical resistivity of SiC+30[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+35[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+40[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ and SiC+45[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composites are $6.74{\times}10^{-4}$, $4.56{\times}10^{-3}$, $1.92{\times}10^{-3}$ and $4.95{\times}10^{-3}[{\Omega}{\cdot}cm]$ at room temperature, respectively. The electrical resistivity of SiC+30[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+35[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+40[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ and SiC+45[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ are Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistance(hereafter, PTCR) in temperature ranges from 25[$^{\circ}C$] to 500[$^{\circ}C$]. It is convinced that SiC+40[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composite by SPS can be applied for heater or electrode.
