  • The present study investigates in detail the combined effects of the Coriolis and centrifugal farce on the development of laminar flows in a square-sectioned U-bend rotating about an axis parallel to the center of bend curvature. When a viscous fluid flows through a rotating curved region, two types of secondary flow occur. One is caused by the Coriolis force due to the rotation of U-bend and the other by the centrifugal farce due to the curvature of U-bend. When the values of Rossby number and curvature ratio are large, the flow field in a rotating U-bend can be represented by two dimensionless parameters ; the Dean number K$\_$LC/=Re/√λ and a body ratio F=λ/Po. For positive rotation, where the rotation is in the same direction as that of the main flow, both the Coriolis force and the centrifugal force act radially outwards, the directions of the two secondary flows are the same. Therefore, the flow structure is qualitatively similar to that observed in a stationary curved duct with a larger f7c. On the other hand, in case of negative rotation, where two farces act in opposite direction, more complex flow fields can be observed depending on the relative magnitudes of the forces.

  • The centrifugal separator which uses gravity separation method for oil-water separation, rotating at high-speed, is one of the most commonly used device for controlling the amount of the oil in waste water collected in bilge. The IMO (International Maritime Organization) has set regulations, also known as MARPOL 73/78, for the prevention of marine pollution. In addition, DET NORSKE VERITAS (DNV) has set standards regarding the assignment of Environmental Class Notation, CLEAN or CLEAN DESIGN, of ships. One of the requirements for classification is that in addition to conforming to MARPOL 73/78, more stringent measures must be taken as well. One of these measures is to limit the oil concentration in bilge water to less than 5ppm. So in this study, an Oil-Water Separator (OWS) is used together with multiple separating plates as a filtration system to be used as an oil-water separation device. The OWS operates using centrifugal separation in which the mixture is separated by centrifugal forces. The main purpose of this paper is to present the OWS separation efficiency according to the rotation speed, mass-flow rate, the angle and the number of stacked layers of the laminated plate using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Improvements to the device will be investigated from these results.

  • The paper presents an analytical investigation of the unbalance vibrations of a pump rotor. The analysis applies to rotor-bearing-seal-impeller systems which consist of rigid disks, distributed parameter rotor elements and discreate bearings, seals, and impellers. The dynamic hydraulic force of bearing, seal and impeller elements are represented by four stiffness coefficients arid four damping coefficients. Numerical results are presented for unbalance response associated with various kinds bearing, and with effects of seal and impeller forces.

  • An analytical method using the substructure synthesis and assumed modes method is developed to investigate the effect of flexibility of bladed disk assembly on vibrational modes of flexible rotor system. In modeling the system, Coriolis forces, gyroscopic moments, and centrifugal stiffening effects are taken into account. Then the coupled vibrations between the shaft and bladed disk are extensively investigated using simplistic models, as the shaft rotational speed and the pretwist and stagger angles of blade are varied.

  • In this paper, we present an efficient method for finite element vibration analysis of constantly rotating blade disks which are deformed to some considerable extent by centrifugal force, Coriolis force and operating load, and vibrate due to several types of exciting forces. A blade disk which is a structure with cyclic symmetry is divided into substructures with the same geometry. Only one substructure is modeled and can be analysed rapidly and exactly using discrete Fourier transform by means of a computer with small memory.

  • A comprehensive theory of the spin coating technique has been reviewed and the basic principles and parameters controlling the process are clearly highlighted, which include spin speed, spin time, acceleration and fume exhaust. The process generally involves four stages: a dispense stage, substrate acceleration stage, a stage of substrate spinning at a constant rate and fluid viscous forces dominate fluid thinning behaviour and a stage of substrate spinning at a constant rate and solvent evaporation dominates the coating thinning behaviour. The study also considered some common thin film defects associated with this technique, which include comet, striation, chucks marks environmental sensitivity and edge effect and possible remedies.

  • Using the design parameters of multi-joint manipulator, worspace of the manipulator were evaluated analytically, and the relation between such design parameters and nonlinearity of the manipulator were presented dynamically. The ratio of the volumes of a manipulator's workspace to the cube of its total link length presents a kinematic performance index [NVI] for the manipullator. It is possible to geometrically represent the manipulator dynamics with the generalized inertia ellipsoid (GIE). The relation between the GIE configuration and the characteristics of manipulator dynamics was analysed in terms of inertia and nonlinear forces (Coliolis and centrifugal forces). The nonlinearity caused by the change of the GIE configuration were affected by the difference between the major and minor axes length of the GIE. The results of this investigationare applied to the optimal design of the manipulator.

  • Mean flow and turbulence properties of developing turbulent flows in a 90 degree square bend with spanwise rotation were measured by a hot-wire anemometer. A slanted wire is rotated into 6 orientations and the voltage outputs from them are combined to obtain the mean velocity and Reynolds stress components. The combinative effects of the centrifugal and Coriolis forces due to the curvature and the rotation of bend on the mean motion and turbulence structures are investigated experimentally. Results show that the two body forces can either enhance or counteract each other depending on the flow direction in the bend.

  • An analytical procedure on the base of the substructure synthesis and assumed modes method is developed to investigate the flexibility effect of bladed disk assembly on vibrational modes of flexible rotor system. In modeling the system, Coriolis forces, gyroscopic moments, and centrifugal stiffening effects are taken into account. The coupled vibrations between the shaft and bladed disk are then extensively investigated through the numerical simulation of simplified models, with varying the shaft rotational speed and the prewist and stagger angles of the blade. It is found that the Coriolis and inertia forces and the inertia torque, which are induced by the one nodal diameter modes of the bladed disk and vary depending upon the stagger and prewist angles, lead to the coupled motions of the shaft and the bladed disk.

  • Control of multi-link robot arms is a challenging and difficult problem because of the highly nonlinear dynamics. Independent joint adaptive scheme is developed for control of robot manipulators based on Sugeno-type of fuzzy logic. Fuzzy logic system is used to approximate the coupling forces among the joints, coriolis force, centrifugal force, gravitational force, and frictional forces. The proposed scheme does not require an accurate manipulator dynamic, and it is proved that closed-loop system is asymptotic stable despite the gross robot parameter variations. Numerical simulations for three-axis PUMA robot are included to show the effectiveness of controller.
