  • This paper presents a single board digital signal processing system which can perform two-dimensional (2-D) digital infinite impulse response (IIR) filtering in realtime. We have developed an architecture to provide not only the necessary computational power but also a balance of the system input/output and computational requirements. The architecture achieves large system throughput by using highly parallel processing at both the system and processor levels. It reduces system data communication requirements significantly by taking advantage of a custom-designed processor and by providing each processor with its own input and ouput channel. After system initialization, almost 100 percent of the time is used for data processing. Data transfers occur concurrently with data processing. The functional level simulation reveals that the system throughput can reach as high as one pixel per system cycle. With only 10MHz clock frequency system, it can implement up to fourth order 2-D IIR filters for video-rate data ($512\times512$ pixels per frame at 30 frames per second). If we increase the system frequency, the system can be used for the preprocessing and postprocessing of video signal of HDTV.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient architecture for a real-time image stitching engine for vision SoCs found in motor vehicles. To enlarge the obstacle-detection distance and area for safety, we adopt panoramic images from multiple telegraphic cameras. We propose a stitching method based on a fixed homography that is educed from the initial frame of a video sequence and is used to warp all input images without regeneration. Because the fixed homography is generated only once at the initial state, we can calculate it using SW to reduce HW costs. The proposed warping HW engine is based on a linear transform of the pixel positions of warped images and can reduce the computational complexity by 90% or more as compared to a conventional method. A dual-core SW/HW image stitching engine is applied to stitching input frames in parallel to improve the performance by 70% or more as compared to a single-core engine operation. In addition, a dual-core structure is used to detect a failure in state machines using rock-step logic to satisfy the ISO26262 standard. The dual-core SW/HW image stitching engine is fabricated in SoC with 254,968 gate counts using Global Foundry's 65 nm CMOS process. The single-core engine can make panoramic images from three YCbCr 4:2:0 formatted VGA images at 44 frames per second and frequency of 200 MHz without an LCD display.

  • The object-oriented coding technique which is one of the coding methods in very low bit rate environment is suitable for videophone image sequence. The selection of source model affect image analysis. In this paper, an image analysis method for the object-oriented coding is presented. The process is composed of changed region detection andmotion estimateion. First, we use the standard deviation of frame difference as thrreshold to extract themoving area. If thesum of gray values in mask is greater than the threshold, the center pixel of the mask is regarded as moving region. After moving is detected in changed region by edge operator, observation point is determined from moving region. The motion is estimated by 6-parameter mapping method with determined observation point. The experimantal resutls show that the proposed method can significantly improve the image quality.

  • This study proposes a method for segmentation and recognition of traffic signs using shape information and edge image in real image. It first segments traffic sign candidate regions by connected component algorithm from binary images, obtained by utilizing the RGB color ratio of each pixel in the image, and then extracts actual traffic signs based on their symmetries on X- and Y-axes. Histogram equalization is performed for unsegmented candidate regions caused by low contrast in the image. In the recognition stage, it utilizes shape information including projection profiles on X- and Y-axes, moment, and the number of crossings and distance which concentric circular patterns and 8-directional rays from region center intersects with edges of traffic signs. It finally performs recognition by measuring similarity with the templates in the database. It will be shown from several experimental results that the system is robust to environmental factors, such as light and weather condition.

  • This paper presents hybrid classification method to improve the performance of satellite images classification by combining Bayesian maximum likelihood classifier, ISODATA clustering and fuzzy C-Means algorithm. In this paper, the training data of each class were generated by separating the spectral signature using ISODATA clustering. We can classify according to pixel's membership grade followed by cluster center of fuzzy C-Means algorithm as the mean value of training data for each class. Bayesian maximum likelihood classifier is performed with prior probability by result of fuzzy C-Means classification. The results shows that proposed method could improve performance of classification method and also perform classification with no concern about spectral signature of the training data. The proposed method Is applied to a Landsat TM satellite image for the verifying test.

  • A role of the binarization is very important in separating the foreground and the background in the field of the computer vision. In this study, an adaptive fuzzy binarization is proposed. An ${\alpha}$-cut control ratio is obtained by the distribution of grey level of pixels in a sliding window, and binarization is performed using the value. To obtain the ${\alpha}$-cut, existing thresholding methods which execution speed is fast are used. The threshold values are set as the center of each membership function and the fuzzy intervals of the functions are specified with the distribution of grey level of the pixel. Then ${\alpha}$-control ratio is calculated using the specified function and binarization is performed according to the membership degree of the pixels. The experimental results show the proposed method can segment the foreground and the background well than existing binarization methods and decrease loss of the foreground.

  • Conventional fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithms have achieved a good clustering performance. However, they do not fully utilize the spatial information in the image and this results in lower clustering performance for images that have low contrast, vague boundaries, and noises. To overcome this issue, we propose an enhanced spatial fuzzy c-means (ESFCM) algorithm that takes into account the influence of neighboring pixels on the center pixel by assigning weights to the neighbors in a $3{\times}3$ square window. To evaluate between the proposed ESFCM and various FCM based segmentation algorithms, we utilized clustering validity functions such as partition coefficient ($V_{pc}$), partition entropy ($V_{pe}$), and Xie-Bdni function ($V_{xb}$). Experimental results show that the proposed ESFCM outperforms other FCM based algorithms in terms of clustering validity functions.

  • This paper presents the design of a JPEG-LS codec for lossless image compression from AR/VR device. The proposed JPEG-LS(: LosSless) codec is mainly composed of a context modeling block, a context update block, a pixel prediction block, a prediction error coding block, a data packetizer block, and a memory block. All operations are organized in a fully pipelined architecture for real time image processing and the LOCO-I compression algorithm using improved 2D approach to compliant with the SBT coding. Compared with a similar study in JPEG-LS, the Block-RAM size of proposed STB-FLC architecture is reduced to 1/3 compact and the parallel design of the predication block could improved the processing speed.

  • In this paper, we propose a deep neural network which extracts SIFT feature points by determining whether the center pixel of a cropped image is a SIFT feature point. The data set of this network consists of a DIV2K dataset cut into $33{\times}33$ size and uses RGB image unlike SIFT which uses black and white image. The ground truth consists of the RobHess SIFT features extracted by setting the octave (scale) to 0, the sigma to 1.6, and the intervals to 3. Based on the VGG-16, we construct an increasingly deep network of 13 to 23 and 33 convolution layers, and experiment with changing the method of increasing the image scale. The result of using the sigmoid function as the activation function of the output layer is compared with the result using the softmax function. Experimental results show that the proposed network not only has more than 99% extraction accuracy but also has high extraction repeatability for distorted images.

  • Purpose: The aim of this in vitro study was to assess the role of bandwidth on the area of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) artifacts caused by orthodontic appliances composed of different alloys, using different pulse sequences in 1.5 T and 3.0 T magnetic fields. Materials and Methods: Different phantoms containing orthodontic brackets (ceramic, ceramic bracket with a stainless-steel slot, and stainless steel) were immersed in agar gel and imaged in 1.5 T and 3.0 T MRI scanners. Pairs of gradient-echo (GE), spin-echo (SE), and ultrashort echo time (UTE) pulse sequences were used differing in bandwidth only. The area of artifacts from orthodontic devices was automatically estimated from pixel value thresholds within a region of interest (ROI). Mean values for similar pulse sequences differing in bandwidth were compared at 1.5 T and 3.0 T using analysis of variance. Results: The comparison of groups revealed a significant inverse association between bandwidth values and artifact areas of the stainless-steel bracket and the self-ligating ceramic bracket with a stainless-steel slot(P<0.05). The areas of artifacts from the ceramic bracket were the smallest, but were not reduced significantly in pulse sequences with higher bandwidth values(P<0.05). Significant differences were also observed between 1.5 T and 3.0 T MRI using SE and UTE, but not using GE 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional pulse sequences. Conclusion: Higher receiver bandwidth might be indicated to prevent artifacts from orthodontic appliances in 1.5 T and 3.0 T MRI using SE and UTE pulse sequences.
