Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate nursing students' awareness and performance on standard precautions and to provide meaningful information for nursing students' education regarding hospital infection control. Method: Four hundred forty seven nursing students at 6 universities in D-city participated in this study. Data collection was conducted from March to April 2011. Students' awareness and performance on standard precautions of infection control in hospitals were measured using the modified 2007 CDC standard precautions guidelines. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS WIN 18.0 program, descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANOVA. Results: The level of students' awareness in the standard precautions was higher than performance. The higher levels of students' awareness and performance on standard precautions included patient care equipment, safe injection practices, and worker safety. The lower levels of students' awareness and performance on standard precautions included hand hygiene and personal protective equipment. There was no difference in the students' awareness and performance of standard precautions according to their characteristics. Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study, hand hygiene and personal protective equipment need to be stressed more within the program to improve nursing students' infection control techniques.
While axons in the peripheral nerve can regenerate and lead to functional recovery to a certain extent after injury, its efficacy varies depending on the severity and duration of the injury. Here, we investigated the effects of Boyanghwano-tang (BYHOT) treatment on the regenerative responses in the sciatic nerves after prolonged transection and coaptation surgery. In mice given crush injury, axonal regeneration was completed when analyzed 1 week later and did not show any difference in regenerative reponses in the distal portion of the nerve between saline- and BYHOT-treated groups. In animal models with transection and reconnection, axonal regeneration was markedly retarded compared to animals with crush injury. Regenerating axons were extended into the reconnected distal portion of the nerve more actively in animals treated with BYHOT than saline controls. Cdc2 protein was similarly induced in nerves with crush injury and with transection and recollection, and its level was lower in BYHOT-treated animal than saline control when measured 2 weeks after nerve reconnection. These results suggest that BYHOT may be useful to promote axonal regeneration in the peripheral nerve after severe injury.

Background: Frequent outbreaks of foodborne illness have been increased awareness of food safety. CDC estimates that each year roughly 48 million people gets sick, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die of foodborne diseases in US. In Korea, 6,058 were hospitalized and 266 incidents were reported in 2012. It is required to develop rapid methods to identify hazard substances in food products for protecting and maintaining safety of the public health. However, conventional methods for pathogens detection and identification involve prolonged multiple enrichment steps. Purpose: This review aims to provide information on biosensors to detect pathogens in food products to enhance food safety. Results: Foodborne outbreaks continue to occur and outbreaks from various food sources have increased the need for simple, rapid, and sensitive methods to detect foodborne pathogens. Conventional methods for foodborne pathogens detection require tremendous amount of labor and time. Biosensors have drawn attentions in recent years because of their ability to detect analytes sensitively and rapidly. Principles along with their advantages and disadvantages of a variety of food safety biosensors including fiber optic biosensor, impedimetric biosensor, surface Plasmon resonance biosensor, and nano biosensor were explained. Also, future trends for the food safety biosensors were discussed.
In an attempt to evaluate the function of MAP kinase of porcine oocytes and to develop a method of assessment for kinase activity, we used MBP as a substrate to detect the MAP kinase activity of porcine oocytes matured in in vitro. The MAP kinase which had lower activity during the first 20 hours of culture started to show an increased amount of activity at 25 hours at which a collapse in nuclear membrane was induced. Significant (P<0.05) a, pp.ared at 30 hours of being cultured. The gel phosphorylation method, MBP which has been known to be a substrate for kinase such as cdc2 kinase, was phosphorylated at two positions corresponding to ERK 1 (44kDa) and ERK2 (42 kDa) which are known as mammalian MAP kinase. The existence of MARKK and MAP kinase were identified with western blotting at 0 hour culture of immature GV oocytes. The amount of those proteins did not increase during 40 hours of culture, which suggest that the increase of MAP kinase activity was caused by phosphorylaton rather than due to change in protein amount. MAPKK and MAP kinase were shown to be dephosporylated with deactivated at M 1 stage by inhibition of protein synthesis with cycloheximide added at the strat following the cultrue. We have reulsts that indicate the existedence of MAP kinase cascade which was activated simultaneously with start of porcine oocyte maturation (GVBD).

Modern traffic accidents are a complex occurrence. Various indicators are needed to analyze traffic accidents. Countries that have been investigating traffic accidents for a long time accumulate various data to analyze traffic accidents. The Korean In-Depth Accident Study (KIDAS) database collected damaged vehicles and severity of injury caused by Collision Deformation Classification code (CDC code), Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS), and Injury Severity Score (ISS). As a result of the investigation, data relating to the injuries of the occupants can be easily obtained, but it was difficult to analyze human severity based on the information of the damaged vehicle. This study suggests a method to measure the speed change at the time of an accident, which is one of the most important indicators in the vehicle crash database, to help advance KIDAS research.
Neonatal infection caused by Cronobacter species can result in serious illnesses such as bacteremia, septicemia, meningitis, and death in at-risk infants who are orally fed contaminated reconstituted powdered infant formulas. The objective of this study was to compare the virulence among three Cronobacter species strains by using an animal model for human neonatal Cronobacter species infections. We acquired timed-pregnant ICR mice and all owed them to give birth naturally. On postnatal day 3, each pup was administered orally a total dose of $1{\times}10^7$ CFU Cronobacter species strain 3439, CDC 1123-79, and 3231. Mice were observed twice daily for morbidity and mortality. At postnatal day 10, the remaining pups were euthanized, and brain, liver, and cecum were excised and analyzed for the presence of Cronobacter species. Cronobacter species were isolated from cecum and other tissues in inoculated mice. In the tissues of Cronobacter species infected mice, meningitis and gliosis were detected in the brain. In this study, we identified the virulence among Cronobacter species strains by using a neonatal mice model which was a very effective animal model for human neonatal Cronobacter species infections.
Carbon layers were fabricated on silicon carbide by chlorination reaction at temperatures between $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1500^{\circ}C$ with $Cl_2/H_2$ gas mixtures. The effect of reaction temperature on the micro-structures and tribological behavior of SiC derived carbon layer was investigated. Tribological tests were carried out ball-on-disk type wear tester. Carbon layers were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, Raman spectroscopy and surface profilometer. Both friction coefficients and wear rates were maintained low values at reaction temperature up to $1300^{\circ}C$ but increased suddenly above this temperature. Variation of surface roughness as a function of reaction temperature was dominant factor affecting tribological transition behavior of carbon layer derived from silicon carbide at high temperature.
Purpose: To determine whether the practice of not routinely changing ventilator circuits in patients who require prolonged mechanical ventilation is associated with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Methods: Patients were divided into two groups, ventilator circuits were routinely changed every 7 days for the control group (39) and every 14 days for the experimental group (40) over a period of 1 yr (April 1, 2009-March 31, 2010). Pediatric patients (age 17 yr or less) were not included. VAP was diagnosed by the criteria of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Incidence of VAP and characteristics of infection were evaluated. Results: In the experimental group, 2 episodes of pneumonia were observed in 40 patients and 1,322 ventilator days. The rate of VAP was 1.5 per 1,000 ventilator days. There was 1 episode of pneumonia in 39 patients and 481 ventilator days for the control group. The rate of VAP was 2.1 per 1,000 ventilator days. The difference between both groups was not significant (p=.695). Conclusion: Extending ventilator circuit change interval from 7 days to 14 days does not increase the risk for VAP.
Purpose: Stereopsis is one of primary characteristics for assessment of binocular function. The purpose of this study was to determine the possible relationship between the degree of exophoria and stereoacuity at near. Methods: 110 exophores (male n=71, female n=39, mean $age{\pm}SD=11.30{\pm}1.47$ years) without amblyopia, strabismus, and ocular and systemic pathology were studied. Subjects were also excluded if they had visual acuity poorer than 0.8 in either eye or vertical phoria greater than 1 prism diopter. Clinical tests were performed for near phorias by von Graefe technique using a Digital Refractor (CDR-3100, Huvitz, Korea) with chart (Predio CDC-4000, Huvitz, Korea), and for stereoacuity using the Titmus fly. Results: A one-way analysis of variance revealed that mean values of the stereoacuity classified according to the degrees of the exophoria were not significantly different (p>0.05). Conclusions: Based on the result of this study, it was found that there was no relationship between the degree of exophoria and stereoacuity.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the characteristics of single- and dualspecies in vitro oral biofilms made by static and dynamic methods. Methods: Hydroxyapatite (HA) disks, 12.7 mm in diameter and 3 mm thick, were coated with processed saliva for 4 hours. The disks were divided into a static method group and a dynamic method group. The disks treated with a static method were cultured in 12-well plates, and the disks in the dynamic method group were cultured in a Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) biofilm reactor for 72 hours. In the single- and dual-species biofilms, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Porphyromonas gingivalis were used, and the amount of adhering bacteria, proportions of species, and bacterial reduction of chlorhexidine were examined. Bacterial adhesion was examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Results: Compared with the biofilms made using the static method, the biofilms made using the dynamic method had significantly lower amounts of adhering and looser bacterial accumulation in SEM and CLSM images. The proportion of P. gingivalis was higher in the dynamic method group than in the static method group; however, the difference was not statistically significant. Furthermore, the biofilm thickness and bacterial reduction by chlorhexidine showed no significant differences between the 2 methods. Conclusions: When used to reproduce periodontal biofilms composed of F. nucleatum and P. gingivalis, the dynamic method (CDC biofilm reactor) formed looser biofilms containing fewer bacteria than the well plate. However, this difference did not influence the thickness of the biofilms or the activity of chlorhexidine. Therefore, both methods are useful for mimicking periodontitis-associated oral biofilms.
