Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) stabilized cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles were loaded onto the surface of silica ($SiO_2$) nanoparticles by using ${\gamma}$-irradiation. TEM micrograph reveals the presence of ~20nm sized CdS nanoparticles on the surface of $SiO_2$ nanoparticles. XRD patterns confirm the crystalline. PL spectra of the simple PVP-stabilized CdS nanoparticle and $SiO_2$@CdS composite confirm the differences in the emission characteristics between them. Two prominent emission peaks were noted around 550 nm and 600 nm for PVP-stabilized CdS nanoparticles). The emission peaks noted for the PVP-stabilized CdS nanoparticles were found to be blue shifted for $SiO_2$@CdS composites. Besides, an additional emission peak around 450 nm was noticed for the $SiO_2$@CdS composite. The presence of CdS nanoparticles influence the emission characteristics and induce quantum confinement effect.
Poly [(dimethylmethylyinyl) siloxane] phosphineoxide (PMViSPO) was prepared by adding phosphorus oxychloride $(POCl_3)$ to poly (dimethylmethylyinyl) siloxane (PMViS) at $0^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen atmosphere. Cadmium selenide (CdSe) was prepared by reacting cadmium oxide (CdO), tetradecyl-phosphonic acid (TDPA), trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) at $300^{\circ}C$, and adding solution of dissolved Se to tributylphosphine (TBP) and trioctylphosphine (TOP) CdSe-poly [(dimethylmethylvinyl) siloxane] phosphine-oxide (CdSe-SPO) adduct was synthesised by adding PMViSPO to CdSe solution. Liquid silicone rubber composite (LSRC-1) was prepared by compounding $\alpha,\omega-vinyl$ poly (dimethylsiloxane) (VPMS), $\alpha,\omega-hydrogen$) poly(dimethylsiloxane) (HPMS), and CdSe under Pt catalyst, and also LSRC-2 was prepared from VPMS, HPMS, and CdSe-SPO using Pt catalyst. It was confirmed that CdSe nanoparticles with photoluminescence characteristics was dispersed uniformly in LSR matrix. The diameter of CdSe was $30\sim50nm$. By measuring the number of CdSe nanoparticles, 202 particles of CdSe in LSRC-2 and 165 particles of CdSe in LSRC-1 were dispersed in the same area of LSR matrix. Thermal stability for LSRC-2 compounded with CdSe-SPO was better than LSRC-1.
A series of hydrophobic dodecyl-terminated 6th-generation poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (H)-encapsulated cadmium sulfide ((CdS)n@H) nanoparticles in a co-solvent (toluene: methanol = 6.8: 3.2 v/v) are synthesized. The diameters of CdS nanoparticles within the dendrimer were estimated by analyzing the positions of the first excitonic absorption peaks of CdS in UV-vis spectra. The size of the CdS nanoparticle within the dendrimer shows a saturation value as the CdS/H ratio (n) increases, which is believed to be due to the limited physical size of the void cavity within the dendrimer. This simple and convenient method of estimating the saturation of the size of CdS in dendrimers may be useful in determining the maximum void space within other dendrimers under various solvent conditions.
In this study, the fundamental behavior of microdomains in block copolymer/nanoparticle composite thin films was examined. In this experiment, polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) block copolymer and CdSe nanoparticles having a noncentrosymmetric property were employed. Composite hybrid thin films were produced by a spin coating method, and changes in the internal structure of composite thin films were monitored mainly by transmission electron microscopy. In summary, nanoparticles resided inside the thin film relatively intact, however, the block copolymer microdomains rotated parallel to the electric field direction. This study will be very helpful for future research activities regarding behaviors of heterogeneous composite materials under external fields.

We fabricated quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) using cadmium sulfide (CdS) and cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs) as sensitizers. A spin coated $TiO_2$ nanoparticle (NP) film on tin-doped indium oxide glass and sputtered Au on fluorine-doped tin oxide glass were used as photo-anode and counter electrode, respectively. CdS QDs were deposited onto the mesoporous $TiO_2$ layer by a successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method. Pre-synthesized CdTe QDs were deposited onto a layer of CdS QDs using a direct adsorption technique. CdS/CdTe QDSSCs had high light harvesting ability compared with CdS or CdTe QDSSCs. QDSSCs incorporating single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), sprayed onto the substrate before deposition of the next layer or mixed with $TiO_2$ NPs, mostly exhibited enhanced photo cell efficiency compared with the pristine cell. In particular, a maximum rate increase of 24% was obtained with the solar cell containing a $TiO_2$ layer mixed with SWNTs.
To improve photocatalytic performance, CdS nanoparticle deposited TiO2 nanotubular photocatalysts are synthesized. The TiO2 nanotube is fabricated by electrochemical anodization at a constant voltage of 60 V, and annealed at 500 for crystallization. The CdS nanoparticles on TiO2 nanotubes are synthesized by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method. The surface characteristics and photocurrent responses of TNT/CdS photocatalysts are investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis spectrometer and LED light source installed potentiostat. The bandgaps of the CdS deposited TiO2 photocatalysts are gradually narrowed with increasing of amounts of deposited CdS nanoparticles, which enhances visible light absorption ability of composite photocatalysts. Enhanced photoelectrochemical performance is observed in the nanocomposite TiO2 photocatalyst. However, the maximum photocurrent response and dye degradation efficiency are observed for TNT/CdS30 photocatalyst. The excellent photocatalytic performance of TNT/CdS30 catalyst can be ascribed to the synergistic effects of its better absorption ability of visible light region and efficient charge transport process.
A non-vacuum process for $Cu(In,Ga)Se_2$ (CIGS) thin film solar cells from nanoparticle precursors was described in this work CIGS nanoparticle precursors was prepared by a low temperature colloidal route by reacting the starting materials $(CuI,\;InI_3,\;GaI_3\;and\;Na_2Se)$ in organic solvents, by which fine CIGS nanoparticles of about 20nm in diameter were obtained. The nanoparticle precursors were mixed with organic binder material for the rheology of the mixture to be adjusted for the doctor blade method. After depositing the mixture of CIGS with binder on Mo/glass substrate, the samples were preheated on the hot plate in air to evaporate remaining solvents ud to burn the organic binder material. Subsequently, the resultant (porous) CIGS/Mo/glass simple was selenized in a two-zone Rapid Thermal Process (RTP) furnace in order to get a solar ceil applicable dense CIGS absorber layer. Complete solar cell structure was obtained by depositing. The other layers including CdS buffer layer, ZnO window layer and Al electrodes by conventional methods. The resultant solar cell showed a conversion efficiency of 0.5%.
Silica is one of the most abundant compounds found in nature. Immoderate exposure to crystalline silica has been linked to pulmonary disease and crystalline silica has been classified as a Group I carcinogen. Ultrafine (diameter <100 nm) silica particles may have different toxicological properties compared to larger particles. We evaluated the effect of ultrafine silica nanoparticles on mouse bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDC) and murine dendritic cell line, DC2.4. The exposure of dendritic cells (DCs) to ultrafine silica nanoparticles showed a decrease in cell viability and an induction of cell death in size- and concentration-dependent manners. In addition, in order to examine the phenotypic changes of DCs following co-culture with silica nanoparticles, we added each sized-silica nanoparticle along with GM-CSF and IL-4 during and after DC differentiation. Expression of CD11c, a typical DC marker, and multiple surface molecules such as CD54, CD80, CD86, MHC class II, was changed by silica nanoparticles in a size-dependent manner. We also found that silica nanoparticles affect inflammatory response in DCs in vitro and in vivo. Finally, we found that p38 and NF-${\kappa}B$ activation may be critical for the inflammatory response by silica nanoparticles. Our data demonstrate that ultrafine silica nanoparticles have cytotoxic effects on dendritic cells and immune modulation effects in vitro and in vivo.

QDs-LEDs(quantum dot light emitting device) should contain well-organized arrays of QDs on an electron transport layer. Thin films of CdSe/ZnS core-shell QDs were successfully fabricated on $TiO_2$ substrates by using PDMS stamp and micro contact printing method. 2-Carboxyethylphosphonic acid(CAPO) and 1,6-hexanedithiol(HDT) were employed as molecular linkers in assembling CdSe/ZnS core-shell QDs with high-density and uniform array. The CAPO increased the binding strength between the QDs and the substrates, and the HDT induced the strong inter-particle attractions of assembled QDs. The assembling properties of QDs thin films were characterized by SEM, AFM, optical microscope and photoluminescence spectroscope(PL).
Copper composite materials have attracted wide attention for energy applications. Especially $CuInS_2$ has a desirable direct band gap of 1.5 eV, which is well matched with the solar spectrum. $CuInS_2$ nanoparticles could make it possible to develop color-tunable $CuInS_2$ nanoparticle emitter in the near-infrared region (NIR) for energy application and bio imaging sensors. In this paper, $CuInS_2$ nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by thermo-decomposition methods. Surface modification of $CuInS_2$ nanoparticles were carried out with various semiconductor materials (CdS, ZnS) for enhanced optical properties. Surface modification and silica coating of hydrophobic nanoparticles could be dispersed in polar solvent for potential applications. Their optical properties were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The structures of silica coated $CuInS_2$ were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
