It is well known that the family-mold has an advantage to reduce the cost for production and mold. However, defects are frequently occurred by over packing the smaller volume cavity during molding, especially when the family-mold has a volumetric difference between two cavities. In this study, the cavity-filling imbalance was confirmed by the temperature and the pressure sensors, and a variable-runner system was developed for balancing the cavity-filling. Experiments of balancing the cavity filling was carried out in the family-mold with the variable-runner system, and balancing the cavity-filling was confirmed by changing the cross-sectional area of a runner in the variable-runner system with the temperature and pressure sensors. The influence of the injection speed to the balancing-capability of the variable-runner system was also examined in the experiment.
Optimal design of a piezoelectric smart structure is studied for cabin noise control. A cubic shaped acoustic cavity with a flat plate which covers one side is taken as the problem. The sensor signal is returned to the actuator through a negative gain. The acoustic cavity is modeled using the modal approach which represents the pressure fields in the cavity as a sum of mode shapes of the cavity with unknown coefficients. By using orthogonality of the mode shapes of the cavity, finite element equation for the structure with the influence of the acoustic cavity is derived. The objective function is the average pressure at a certain region, so-called silent zone, in the cavity and the design variables are the locations and sizes of the piezoelectric actuator and sensor. The optimal design is performed at several frequencies and the results show a remarkable noise reduction.
It is well-known that rectangular bulk-Si sensors prepared by etch or epi etch-stop micromachining technology are already in practical use today, but the conventional bulk-Si sensor shows some drawbacks such as large chip size and limited applications as silicon sensor device is to be miniaturized. We consider a circular-shape SOI(Silicon-On-Insulator) micro-cavity technology to facilitate multiple sensors on very small chip, to make device easier to package than conventional sensor like pressure sensor and to provide very high over-pressure capability. This paper demonstrates the cross-functional results for stress analyses(targeting $5{\mu}m$ deflection and 100MPa stress as maximum at various applicable pressure ranges), for finding permissible diaphragm dimension by output sensitivity, and piezoresistive sensor theory from two-type SOI structures where the double SOI structure shows the most feasible deflection and small stress at various ambient pressures. Those results can be compared with the ones of circular-shape bulk-Si based sensor$^{[17]}. The SOI micro-cavity formed the sensors is promising to integrate with calibration, gain stage and controller unit plus high current/high voltage CMOS drivers onto monolithic chip.
In this study, a Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) Carbon Dioxide (CO2) sensor with an externally exposed optical cavity is proposed for improving sensitivity. NDIR CO2 sensors with high performance must use a lamp-type infrared (IR) source with a strong IR intensity. However, a lamp-type IR source generates high thermal energy that induces thermal noise, interfering with the accuracy of the CO2 concentration measure. To solve this problem, the optical cavity of the NDIR CO2 sensor is exposed to quickly dissipate heat. As a result, the proposed NDIR CO2 sensor has a shorter warm-up time and a higher sensitivity compared to the conventional NDIR CO2 sensor.

The objective function is the average pressure at a certain region, so-called silent zone, in the cavity and the design variables are the locations and sizes of the piezoelectirc actuator and sensor. The optimal design is performed at several frequencies and the results show a remarkable noise reduction. To see the robustness of the optimally designed result, the configuration is used to examine the noise reduction at different frequencies. By adjusting the gain at each frequencies, it is possible to reduce the noise in comparison with the result when the actuator is not activated.
In this paper, a novel multimode liquid metal-based pressure sensor is developed. The main body of the sensor is composed of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer. The structure of the sensor looks like a sandwich, in which the upper structure contains a cylindrical cavity, and the bottom structure contains a spiral microchannel, and the middle partition layer separates the upper and the bottom structures. Then, the liquid metal is injected into the top cavity and the bottom microchannel. Based on linear elastic fracture mechanics, the deformation of the microchannel cross-section is theoretically analyzed. The changes of resistance, capacitance, and inductance of the microchannel under pressure are deduced, and the corresponding theoretical models are established. The theoretical values of the pressure sensor are in good agreement with experimental data, implying that the developed theoretical model can explain the performance of the sensor well.
We have simulated and proposed novel optical cavity, which has two elliptical mirrors, for NDIR gas sensor module and have tested it from 0 ppm to 2,000 ppm $CO_2$ concentration. The proposed sensor module shows the maximum peak voltage at 500 ms pulse modulation time, however, it shows a maximum voltage changes at 200 ms pulse duration with 18,000 times amplification gain. From 0 ppm to 2,000 ppm, the voltage difference of sensor module $({\Delta}V)$ shows 360 mV at 200 ms pulse duration and 3 sec turn-off time. The response time of designed sensor module is about 30 seconds.
Fiber ring laser based intra-cavity absorption spectroscopic sensor has great potential for high sensitivity gas detection. Using the rate equations and propagation equations, we investigated theoretically factors that affect the sensitivity of such fiber ring laser sensors and determined the optimal design parameters and conditions for significant enhancement of the system sensitivity. Experiments have been conducted to determine the sensitivity enhancement performance. The results showed a factor of 25 ~ 30 in sensitivity enhancement in the experimental system, agreeing well with the theoretical expectations. Experiments on acetylene detection have also been carried out and the results showed that the ring cavity significantly increases the signal absorption and that high sensitivity can be obtained for gas detection.
Almost all injection molds have multi-cavity, which are designed with geometrically balanced runner system in order to made filling balance between cavity to cavity during injection molding. However, filling imbalance has been existed in the geometrically balanced runner system. In this study, we made an experiment and investigated that are filling balanced according to material. Also, in case of filling imbalance was occurred, we conducted experiments in order to find out difference of cavity pressure with cavity pressure sensor. When filling imbalance was occurred between cavity to cavity, we investigated the filling imbalance and pressure differences by computer-aided engineering(CAE).
