In this paper, numerical simulation of cavitation flow for modified NACA66 hydrofoil was made by using the multi-phase RANS equation based on pseudo-compressibility. The Homogeneous mixture model comprised of the mixture continuity, mixture momentum and liquid volume fraction equations was utilized. A vertex-centered finite-volume method was used in conjunction 2nd-order Roe's FDS to discretize the inviscid fluxes. The viscous fluxes were computed based on central differencing The Spalart-Allmaras one equation model was employed for the closure of turbulence. Reasonable agreements were obtained between the calculation results and the experiment for pressure coefficients on the hydrofoil surface.
The objective of this paper is to investigate the gravity effect on the shape characters of natural supercavity. A finite difference solver along with an implicit, dual time, preconditioned, three-dimensional algorithm has been used to solve the two-phase Navier Stokes equations. Numerical solutions were performed for natural supercavitating flow past a disk for different cavitation and Froud numbers. The numerical results were compared with corresponding analytical results in quantitative manner and it was found that the shape of supercavity was reasonably predicted Numerical results indicated that the gravity effect can induce the asymmetry of supercavity. The asymmetry was apparent when the froud number was smaller so that for constant cavitation number when we reduced the froud number the opt of the axis of supercavity increased. Moreover, for specific froud number a decrease in cavitation number resulted in an increase in the offset of the supercavity Numerical results revealed that for froud number greater than 25 the gravity effect is negligible.
Flew control devices, such as flow liners, are frequently introduced in a cavitation tunnel in order to reduce the tunnel blockage effect, when a three-dimensional wake distribution is simulated using a complete ship model or a dummy model. In order to estimate the tunnel wall effect and to evaluate the effect of flow liners on the simulated wake distribution, a surface panel method is adopted for the calculation of the flow around a ship model and flow liners installed in a rectangular test section off cavitation tunnel. Calculation results on the Sydney Express ship model show that the tunnel wall effect on the hull surface pressure distribution is negligible for less than 5% blockage and can be appreciable for more than 20% blockage. The flow liners accelerate the flow near the afterbody of the ship model, so that the pressure gradient there becomes more favorable and accordingly the boundary layer thickness would be reduced. Since the resulting wake distribution is assumed to resemble the full scale wake, flow liners can also be used to simulate an estimated full scale wake without modifying the ship model. Boundary taper calculation should be incorporated in order to correlate the calculated wake distribution with the measured one.
Recently, as container ships become larger and faster, rudder cavitations are more frequently observed near the gap between the horn and rudder plates of the ships to cause serious damages to the rudder surface of the ship. The authors already have suggested through a series of model experiments and numerical computations that employment of an appropriate blocking device for gap flow may retard the gap cavitation. For examples, a cam device installed near the outer edges of the vertical gap or a water-injection device combined with a pair of half-round bars installed inside the gap can considerably reduce the gap cavitation. However, it is also found that effective blocking of the flow through the vertical gap results in growth of the cavitation near the horizontal gap instead. In the present study, effectiveness of the simultaneous blocking of the flow through the horizontal and vertical gaps of a horn type rudder in minimizing the damage by gap cavitation is studied. Additional blocking disks are inserted inside the horizontal gaps on the top and bottom of the pintle block and numerical computations are carried out to confirm the combined effect of the blocking devices.

The attachment of inducer upstream of main impeller is an effective method to improve the suction performance of turbopump. However, various types of cavitation instabilities are known to occur even at the designed flow rate as well as in the partial flow rate region. The cavitation surge occurring at partial flow rates is known to be strongly associated with the inlet back flow. In the present study, in order to understand the detailed structure of internal flow of inducer, we firstly carried out the experimental and numerical studies of non-cavitating flow, focusing on the flow field near the inlet throat section and inside the blade passage of a two bladed inducer at a partial flow rate. The steady flow simulation with cavitation model was also made to investigate the difference of flow field between in the cavitating and no-cavitating conditions.
Heavy diesel vehicles are one of major sources of urban fine dust in Korea and other developing countries. In this study, an auxiliary device assisting fuel atomization, which is called FAD (Fuel Activation Device), was closely reviewed through numerical simulation. As calculated, the diesel flow velocity passing across FAD increased up to 1.68 times, and it enhanced the cavitation effect which could improve the injected fuel atomization. Super cavitation phenomenon, which is the most important effect on nozzle injection, has occurred until the cavitation number (${\sigma}$) decreased from 1.15 to 1.09, and atomized droplets via a nozzle of which opening was $500{\mu}m$ distributed less than $200{\mu}m$ in sauter mean diameter (SMD).
In this paper, the cavitating flows around a hydrofoil have been numerically investigated by using a 2-d multi-phase RANS flow solver based on pseudo-compressibility and a homogeneous mixture model on unstructured meshes. For this purpose, a vertex-centered finite-volume method was utilized in conjunction with 2nd-order Roe's FDS to discretize the inviscid fluxes. The viscous fluxes were computed based on central differencing. The Spalart-Allmaras one equation model was employed for the closure of turbulence. A dual-time stepping method and the Gauss-Seidel iteration were used for unsteady time integration. The phase change rate between the liquid and vapor phases was determined by Merkle's cavitation model based on the difference between local and vapor pressure. Steady state calculations were made for the modified NACA66 hydrofoil at several flow conditions. Good agreements were obtained between the present results and the experiment for the pressure coefficient on a hydrofoil surface. Additional calculation was made for cloud cavitation around the hydrofoil. The observation of the vapor structure, such as cavity size and shape, was made, and the flow characteristics around the cavity were analyzed. Good agreements were obtained between the present results and the experiment for the frequency and the Strouhal number of cavity oscillation.
Cavitation causes a great deal of noise, damage to components, vibrations, and a loss of efficiency in devices, such as propellers, pump impellers, nozzles, injectors, torpedoes, etc. Thus, the cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many engineering systems. In the present work, a two-phase flow solver based on the homogeneous mixture model has been developed. The solver employs an implicit preconditioning, dual time stepping algorithm in curvilinear coordinates. The flow characteristics around Clark-Y hydrofoil were calculated and then validated by comparing with the experimental data. The lift and drag coefficients with changes of angle of attack and cavitation number were obtained. The results show that cavity length and lift, drag coefficient increase with increasing angle of attack.
Recently, horn-type rudders are generally being used at high speed container ships and are frequently suffering from the cavitation occurs on the rudder surface in the vicinity of the gap between the horn and rudder plate. In the present study, a fluid supplying device is employed as to decrease the gap cavitation of the horn-type rudder. The device is devised to inject the water against the pressure side through the nozzle installed inside of the gap to control the gap flow. Numerical calculations are performed to investigate the effectiveness of the device and the results show that the device can noticeably reduce the gap cavitation. The rates of water injection for achievement of the maximum retardations of gap flow are also sought.

Cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many engineering systems, such as marine propellers, pump impellers, nozzles, torpedoes, etc. The present work has developed the base code to solve the cavitating flows past the axisymmetric bodies with several forebody shapes. The governing equation is the Navier-Stokes equation based on homogeneous mixture model. The momentum is in the mixture phase while the continuity equation is solved in liquid and vapor phase, separately. The solver employs an implicit preconditioning algorithm in curvilinear coordinates. The computations have been carried out for the cylinders with hemispherical, 1-caliber, and 0-caliber forebody and, then, compared with experiments and other numerical results. Fairly good agreements with experiments and numerical results have been achieved. It has been concluded that the present numerical code has successfully accounted for the cavitating flows past axisymmetric bodies. The present code has also shown the capability to simulate ventilated cavitation.
