  • Stainless steel is generally known to have characteristics of excellent corrosion resistance and durability, but in a marine environment it can suffer from localized corrosion due to the breakdown of passivity film due to chloride ion in seawater. Furthermore, the damage behaviors are sped up under a cavitation environment because of complex damage from electrochemical corrosion and cavitation-erosion. In this study the characteristics of electrochemical corrosion and cavitation erosion behavior were evaluated on 16.7Cr-10Ni-2Mo stainless steel under a cavitation environment in natural seawater. The electrochemical experiments have been conducted at both static conditions and dynamic conditions inducing cavitation with different current density parameters. The surface morphology and damage behaviors were compared after the experiment. After the cavitation test with time variables morphological examinations on damaged specimens were analyzed by using a scanning electron microscope and a 3D microscope. the galvanostatic experiment gave a cleaner surface morphology presented with less damage depth at high current density regions. It is due to the effect of water cavitation peening under the cavitation condition. In the cavitation experiment, with amplitude of $30{\mu}m$ and seawater temperature of $25^{\circ}C$, weight loss and cavitation-erosion damage depth were dramatically increased after 5 hours inducing cavitation.

  • The galvanostatic tests for corrosion protection are conducted at various applied current densities during 93,600 sec, and evaluated in terms of the variations in current density with time and in the potential at the applied current density. In addition, the corrosion damage depth is analyzed with 3D analysis optical microscope after galvanostatic tests. In this study, it was investigated to decide condition of the corrosion protection gavalnostatic method for Cu-Al alloy that has an excellent corrosion resistance. In the galvanostatic test under the cavitation environment, the energy was reflected or cancelled out by the collision with the oxygen gas generated by the oxygen reduction action. The surface observation showed neither the cavitation damage nor the electrochemical damage in the current density over 0.01 $A/cm^2$ in the dynamic state under the cavitation environment.

  • In this study, the cavitation test and electrochemical experiments were conducted for ALBC3(Cu-Al) alloy that has an excellent corrosion resistance and cavitation characteristic in sea water. Based on the ASTMG32 regulation, the cavitation test was performed with the cavitation and cavitation erosion tester using piezoelectric effect. The electrochemical characteristics are evaluated with potentiostatic experiments in activation polarization potential range. As a result, cavitation damage is increased proportionally to temperature and time at $30{\mu}m$ amplitude. It is appeared that acceleration period in weight loss presented over 6 hours under the cavitation environment in sea water. In addition, corrosion damages were observed at the potential range of -3.2~-1.4 V as the result of potensiostatic experiments during 12 hours in activation polarization potential range.

  • The demand for stainless steel is continuously increasing with the development in offshore industry due to its excellent corrosion resistance characteristics. However, it suffers cavitation-erosion in application of high rotating fluid and the damage accelerates in combination with electrochemical corrosion because of Cl-ion in sea water. This paper investigated the complex damage behavior for 431 stainless steel, that is one of martensite stainless steels, through the hybrid test in sea water. Various experiments were carried out, including potential measurement, anodic/cathodic polarization experiment and Tafel analysis. Surface morphology was observed and damage depth was analyzed by SEM and 3D microscope after each experiment, respectively. The results revealed that more active potential was observed under cavitation condition than static condition due to breakdown of passive film and activation of charge transfer, and that higher corrosion current density was obtained under cavitation condition due to synergistic effect of corrosion and erosion.

  • The hull of a fast sailing aluminium ship are generally prone to erosion owing to the impact of seawater. At this time, synergistic effects of the erosion and the corrosion by aggressive ions such as chlorides tend to aggravate the damage. There have been various attempts, including selection of erosion-resistant materials, cathodic protection and addition of corrosion inhibitors, to overcome damage by erosion or corrosion under marine environments. These approaches, however, have limits on identifying the damage mechanism clearly, because they depend on analogical interpretation by correlating two damage behaviors after the individual studies are assessed. In this research, it was devised a hybrid testing apparatus that integrates electrochemical corrosion test and cavitation test, and thus the erosion-corrosion behavior by cavitation was investigated more reliably. As a result, the slightest damage was observed at the potentials between -1.6 V and -1.5 V. This is considered to be due to a reflection or counterbalancing effect caused by collision of the cavitation cavities and the hydrogen gas formed by activation polarization.

  • In this study, optimal shot peening process conditions were investigated for improving the cavitation erosion resistance of gray cast iron under a marine environment. Shot peening was performed with variables of injection pressure and injection time. The durability was then evaluated through cavitation erosion test which was conducted according to the modified ASTM G-32 standard. The tendency of cavitation erosion damage according to shot peening process condition was investigated through weight loss rate, surface and cross-sectional analysis of the specimen before and after the test. As a result, the shot peening process condition that could minimize cavitation erosion was when the injection pressure was the lowest and when the injection time was the shortest. This was because the flake graphite exposed on the gray cast iron surface could be easily removed under such condition. Therefore, the notch effect can be prevented by surface modification. In addition, the cavitation erosion damage mechanism of gray cast iron was discussed in detail.

  • Pipes operating in the seawater environment faces cavitation degradation and corrosion of the metallic component, as well as a negative synergistic effect. Cavitation degradation shows the mechanism by which materials deteriorate by causing rapid change of pressure or high-frequency vibration in the solution, and introducing the formation and explosion of bubbles. In order to rate the cavitation resistance of materials, constant conditions have been used. However, while a dynamic cavitation condition can be generated in a real system, there has been little reported on the effect of ultrasonic amplitude on the cavitation resistance and mechanism of composites. In this work, 3 kinds of epoxy coatings were used, and the cavitation resistance of the epoxy coatings was evaluated in 3.5% NaCl at 15 ℃ using an indirect ultrasonic cavitation method. Eleven kinds of mechanical properties were obtained, namely compressive strength, flexural strength and modulus, tensile strength and elongation, Shore D hardness, water absorptivity, impact test, wear test for coating only and pull-off strength for epoxy coating/carbon steel or epoxy coating/rubber/carbon steel. The cavitation erosion mechanism of epoxy coatings was discussed on the basis of the mechanical properties and the effect of ultrasonic amplitude on the degradation of coatings.

  • When marine lubricating oil began to be emulsified and oxidized through ingressive water that have leaked from cooling pump seal systems, cooler, purifier system and piping system, the cavitation erosion-corrosion in alloy metals of bearings remains to the various troublesome problem at effective engine performance. Therefore, applied the cathodic protection to the control test of cavitation erosion-corrosion, and appointed the marine system oil containing 3% sea water as test environments, with different conductibility. Also, used the piezoelectric vibrator with 20 KHz, 24 $\mu$m as the cavity generation apparatus, and examined the weight loss, potential value, current density etc. in specimens with those condition. According to this testing data, investigated influence of cathodic protection on the control characteristics of cavitation erosion-corrosion, and will serve those as an elementary design data of marine bearing.

  • Cylinder liners used in diesel engines of combat equipment are prone to cavitation due to wet cooling. The damage caused by erosion and corrosion due to cavitation has a fatal effect on the performance and lifespan of a diesel engine. Therefore, a study was conducted to improve the durability of cylinder liners. Two surface treatment techniques were proposed: nitriding and chrome plating. It was observed that the amount of erosion on the surface of nitride-treated cylinder liners was high because the surface-treated part eroded due to its weak impact resistance against the bubble explosion generated by cavitation. In contrast, the chrome-plated cylinder liner had a lower amount of erosion among the specimens subjected to the accelerated test. These results verified that the resistance of chrome-plated liners against cavitation is high. Therefore, it can withstand the impact of bubble explosion. If the chrome plating thickness is set with reference to the KS standard, an exceptional durability of abrasion, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance can be obtained. If the thickness is set between 120~250㎛, it is expected that the durability of the cylinder liner can be improved. Although a recovery method for corroded cylinder liners is suggested, the proposed method has an inherent risk of crack generation. Therefore, further research is required to solve this problem.
