  • At present, quarternary ammonium salts(cationic surfactant) and Tego compounds (amphoteric surfactant) are used as germicidal agent. In this paper, it was investigated whether their germicidal activities are influenced or not by some suspending agents which are added to them 0.005% benzalkonium chloride aq. solution and 0.05% dodecyl diaminoethyl glycine aq. solution sterilized respectively against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli within a minute. The solutions aded acacia, carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium alginate solutions to make to 0.005% to above surfactants solution decreased the germicidal activity, not being sterilized bacteria for more than 2 hours however, the solutions decreased the germicidal activity by addition of suspending agents such as acacia, carboxymethyl cellose, sodium alginate and bacteria were survival for more than 2 hrs, 0.05% of benzalkonium chloride and 0.1% dodecyl diaminoethyl glycine respectively would be sterilized within 10 minutes, when added to 5% suspending agents. This result show that bactericidal action of dodecyl diaminoethyl glycine is affected by suspending agents less than that of benzalkonium chloride.

  • Cationic surfactants have a bactericidal effect and the study for effective development of them became important parts in the industry. There have been increasing researches that focus on the development of products having not only outstanding features but also safety and biodegradability. In this work, novel ester-type cationic surfactants were obtained via Michael addition reaction. Intermediates were quantitatively prepared by the Michael addition reaction between alkyl acrylate and amine compounds under mild conditions without solvent and catalyst. The intermediates were quaternized with dimethyl sulfate. HQ21 with two hydrophobic groups and a hydrophilic group and HQ22 with two hydrophobic groups and two hydrophilic groups were obtained. The structures of the products were characterized by 1H-NMR, HR-MS and FT-IR and biodegradability of the products were tested.

  • The criticical micelle concentration (CMC) was measured by using the UV-Vis method for the micellization of the ammonium type cationic surfactants (DTAB, TTAB, and CTAB) in the aqueous aniline solution. The enthalpy change (${\Delta}H^0$) and entropy change (${\Delta}S^0$) were calculated from the dependence of Gibbs free energy change (${\Delta}G^0$) on the temperature for micellization of the cationic surfactants between 290K and 314K. The effects of n-butanol and sodium chloride on the micellization of cationic surfactants were measured and compared with the other thermodynamic functions. All the free energy changes (${\Delta}G^0$) of the micellization were negative, all the enthalpy change (${\Delta}H^0$) were negative, and all the entropy change (${\Delta}S^0$) were positive values, respectively. The micelle formation of cationic surfactant in aniline solution is a spontaneous exothermic reaction, and the iso-structural temperature calculated from the thermodynamic values show that enthalpy and entropy contribution to the micellization are almost the same for the micellization of cationic surfactants

  • Cr(VI) reduction was successfully achieved in the presence of cationic micelles (CMs) under visible light illumination. Micelle formation of cationic surfactants seems to be critical in Cr(VI) reduction. Cr(VI) was reduced very fast above the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of CTAB solutions, but was not reduced at all either below or around the cmc of CTAB. The reduction rate of Cr(VI) was enhanced in the absence of dissolved oxygen, supporting that the removal of Cr(VI) should be achieved via a reductive pathway. When CTAB was substituted by Brij 35 or SDS, the reduction of Cr(VI) was negligible. This indicates that the electrostatic interaction between Cr(VI) and headgroups of surfactants is important in the visible light-induced Cr(VI) reduction in micellar solutions.

  • The adsorption characteristics of cationic starches and starch-oligomers were investigated using the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). The adsorbed amount of modified starches was higher than that of cationic surfactants such as $C_{12{\sim}16}$ trimethylammonium bromide. Cationic starches did not show the tendency depending on the degree of cationic substitution and molecular weight. On the other hand, the softness of the adsorption layer increased with the molecular weight of cationic starches in a viscoelasticity terms. During the adsorption/desorption steps, the amount of adsorbed cationic surfactants was 4~9 times. On the other hand, the difference in the amount of adsorption of all the $C_1$ grafted cationic starches was just 0~50%. In addition, the rigidity of the adsorption layer of cationic surfactant in the desorption step decreased, while, that of cationic starches increased at the same condition.

  • Effects of cationic surfactants old the wetting behavior of the DMDHEU treated cotton fibers were investigated using a technique based on the Wilhelmy principle. The results indicated that Interactions between the fiber and water ill the interface make contributions to wettability of the cotton fiber surface because of reorientation of polar groups at the interface. The effects of types and concentration of cationic surfactant on the wettability of both control and durable press(DP) finished cotton fiber are discussed. Below and near the critical micelle concentration(cmc), the adsorption of hexadecyltrimethylammoniumbromide(HTAB) on the control fiber makes the fiber surface more hydrophobic. Near and above the cmc of octadecyltrimethylammouniumbromide(OTAB) , the decrease in advancing contact angles indicates that the control cotton surface became hydrophilic. By the adsorption of both HTAB and OTAB onto the fiber surface, the hydrophobicity of the DP finished fiber surface became mere hydrophilic.

  • In this study, benzyltrialkylammonium chlorides with different alkyl chain length were synthesized and applied to liposome. Prepared cationic surfactant embedded liposomes were measured particle size, zetapotential, release property and antibacterial activity. The average particle size of liposomes was 120~140 nm. As alkyl chain length was increased, the liposome size was increased. Zetapotential for the solution of liposomes added cationic surfactants were in the range of +80~90 mV. In release test, collagen release rate could be controlled by alkyl chain length. liposome embedded long alkyl chain surfactant had enhanced sustained release property. Entrapment efficiency of hydrophilic collagen were 25.9~27.5%.

  • At present, analytical methods available for determining the amount of cationic surfactants(DSDMAC) on the fabrics are spectrophotometric method based on formation and extraction of the colored ion pair with anionic dye, radiochemical analysis and HPLC analysis. This study presents new analytical methods based on the formation of cationic surfactant(DSDMAC)-disulfine blue complex on the cotton fabric. Test methods for determining the amount of DSDMAC-disulfine blue complex on the cotton fabrics are measuring the reflectance of the colored fabric and the absorbance of the methanol solution of DSDMAC-disulfine blue complex extracted from dyed cotton fabric. Linear relationships between the K/S value of the fabric treated with DSDMAC followed by disulfine blue and the amount of DSDMAC sorbed by cotton fabric were obtained. Thus, the amount of DSDMAC sorbed by cotton fabric can be determined by K/S value of the fabric. DSDMAC-disulfine blue complex on the cotton fabric was extracted with methanol. The amount of DSDMAC sorbed by cotton fabric was estimated by measuring the absorbance of the methanol solution extracted from dyed cotton fabric.

  • In this study, aqueous acrylic emulsion adhesives were prepared using various surfactants and their properties were also investigated. Solids content, conversion, particle size distribution and initial adhesion properties of the prepared adhesives were compared with each other. The solid content of the adhesives was evaluated 60% and the conversion rate of the emulsion polymerization was 97% at 2 wt% concentration of synthesized surfactants. The particle size distribution analysis revealed that the size distribution of adhesive particles was 290~470 nm when the synthesized cationic surfactant was added. The initial adhesion and adhesion time were also improved. The maximum adhesive strength was found to be 2.55 kgf when using a single surfactant (POE 23), and superior to that of using other surfactants. It was confirmed that the corrosion inhibition of the adhesive prepared by adding the cationic gemini surfactant was maintained for 48 hours.

  • In this study, cationic gemini surfactants were synthesized by increasing the length of the hydrophobic chain and using 1,4-butanediol as a spacer, and the result was confirmed by $^1H-NMR$. The synthesized surfactant was a white powder, and Kraffts point was below $0^{\circ}C$. Surface tension measurements revealed that the evaluated critical micelle concentration (c.m.c) was $1.8{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}6.5{\times}10^{-4}mol/L$ with a surface tension of 22.5~26.1 dyne/cm at the c.m.c. The initial foam height for CG 14-6E-14 estimated by Ross-Miles method was 16 cm and after 5 minutes the height was 14 cm. It was confirmed that the initial foam force and foam stability were the highest. The foam test and emulsion stability of synthesized gemini cationic surfactants were also compared to those of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), a commoly used surfactant.
