  • We analyzed the unit cell performance against the cathode porosity, which is supposed to be closely related with active sites for the cathode reaction. In order to fabricate the unit cells with different porosity in the cathode layer we changed the mixing ratio of fine and coarse LSCF cathode powders. The final porosity of each cathode layer was 14, 23, 27, $39\%$ respectively. According to the electrochemical analysis of unit cell performance via DC current interruption and AC impedance method, the electrodic polarization resistance was diminished as the cathode porosity increased. The decrease of polarization resistance was attributed due to the increase of active reaction sites and the enhancement of overall unit cell performance could be explained in the same line.

  • Solid oxide fuel cells are clean, pollution-free technology for the electrochemical generation of electricity at high efficiency. Specially, the polarization resistance between electrolyte and electrode of SOFC unit cell is of importance, because it is desirable to develop SOFC operating at intermediate temperature below $800^{\circ}C$. The LSCF cathode prepared using modified oxalate method was investigated with different electrolyte. A precursor was prepared with oxalic acid, ethanol and $NH_4OH$ solution. The LSCF precursor was prepared at $80^{\circ}C$, and pH control was 2, 6, 8, 9 and 10. The precursor powder was calcined at $800^{\circ}C$, $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1200^{\circ}C$ for 4hrs. The crystal of LSCF powders show single phase at pH 2, 6, 8 and 9, and the average particle size was about $3{\mu}m$. The LSCF cathode with heat treatment at $1200^{\circ}C$ showed a plot of electric conductivity versus temperature. Unit cell prepared from the LSCF cathode, buffer layer between cathode and electrolyte and the LSGM, YSZ, ScSZ and CeSZ electrolyte. Also interface reaction between LSCF, buffer layer and electrolyte were measured by EPMA and the polarization resistance for unit cell with cycle measure using a Solatron 1260 analyzer.

  • Experiments have been performed to investigate effects of pulsating cathode flow on a 10-cell proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack. For all the experiments, the flow rate, temperature and relative humidity of hydrogen at the anode inlet are fixed. The effects of the pulsating frequency, amplitude and flow rate at the cathode inlet on performance of 10-cell PEMFC are examined. The polarization and power curves show that the power output and limiting current is substantially increased when the pulsating component is added to cathode flow channel. The maximum power output increases by up to 38% and enhancement of the overall performance is more pronounced at lower flow rate region.

  • To allow stable cycling of layered nickel-rich cathode material at high voltage, silyl-functionalized dimethoxydimethylsilane is proposed as a multi-functional additive. In contrast to typical functional additive, dimethoxydimethylsilane does not make artificial cathode-electrolyte interfaces by electrochemical oxidation because it is quite stable under anodic polarization. We find that dimethoxydimethylsilane mainly focuses on scavenging nucleophilic fluoride species that can be produced by electrolyte decomposition during cycling, leading to improving interfacial stability of both nickel-rich cathode and graphite anode. As a result, the cell cycled with dimethoxydimethylsilane-controlled electrolyte exhibits 65.7% of retention after 100 cycle, which is identified by systematic spectroscopic analyses for the cycled cell.

  • In this study, we investigated the long-term stability of Nd2NiO4 solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathodes to evaluate their chromium poisoning tolerance. Symmetrical cells consisting of Nd2NiO4 electrodes and a yttria-stabilized zirconia electrolyte were fabricated and the cell potential and polarization resistance were measured at 850 ℃ in the presence of gaseous chromium species for 800 h. Up to 500 h of operation, the cell potential remained constant at 500 mA/㎠. However, it increased slightly over the operation duration of 550-800 h. No appreciable increase was observed in the polarization resistance of the Nd2NiO4 cathode during the entire operation of 800 h. Physicochemical examinations revealed that the gaseous chromium species did not form chromium-related contamination not only in the Nd2NiO4 cathode but also at the cathode/electrolyte interface. The results demonstrated that Nd2NiO4 is resistant to chromium poisoning, and hence is a potential alternative to standard perovskite cathodes.

  • In the present study, a 10-cell PEMFC stack with straight type cathode flow channels is employed to investigate the effect of inlet air flow header configuration on the overall fuel cell performance. Four different types of inlet flow headers are considered and the flow patterns according to the air inlet flow header configuration are numerically obtained. The computed result for a modified header predicts about 8.5% improvement in the air flow distribution at 10-cell cathode channel inlets. Experiments are also carried out to confirm the numerical findings by measuring actual air flow distributions and the polarization curves of the PEMFC stack.

  • This study focuses on a determination of amount of Pt in the Pt/C for catalysts of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). PEMFC offer low weight and high power density and being considered for automotive and stationary power applications. The PEMFC performance is influenced by several factors, including catalysts and structure of electrode and membrane type. Catalyst of electrode is important factor for PEMFC. One of the obstacles prevent ing polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells from commercialization is the high cost of noble metals to be used as catalyst, such as platinum To effectively use these metals, they have to be will dispersed to small particles on conductive carbon supports. The optimal amount of Pt in Pt/C for cathode catalyst was investigated by using polarization curves in single cell with $H_2/O_2$ operation.

  • At the porous $La_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_{3-{\delta}}$(LCM)/YSZ electrodes of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), the electrochemical redox reaction of oxygen proceeds via the triple boundary (TPB) of gas/LCM/YSZ. The surface diffusion of adsorbed oxygen on LCM has been proposed as the rate determining process, assuming the gradient of oxygen chemical potential from the outer surface of porous layer to TPB. Along with the formation of this gradient, oxygen nonstoichiometry in the bulk of LCM may varies. In this paper, an electrochemical technique was described precisely to determine the variation of oxygen content in LCM of porous LCM/YSZ under polarization. It was shown that the oxygen potential in LCM layer under large cathodic polarization is much lower than that in the gas phase, being determined from the electrode potential and Nernst equation.

  • The perovskites with nominal compositions $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Fe_{1-x}M_xO_3$ (M=Co, Mn, Ni, x=0.1-0.3) were fabricated by a solid-state reaction method as cathode materials of low-temperature operating Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs). X-ray diffraction analysis and microstructure observation for the sintered samples were performed. The ac complex impedance were measured in the temperature range $600-900^{\circ}C$ in air and fitted with a Solatron ZView program. The electrical conductivity and polarization resistance of $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Fe_{1-x}M_xO_3$ (M=Co, Mn, Ni, x=0.1-0.3) were characterized systematically. The porosities of the sintered samples were in the range of 25% to 38%. The polarization resistance of $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Fe_{0.7}M_{0.3}O_3$ was $0.291{\Omega}cm^2\;at\;700^{\circ}C$.
