  • For every interval [a, b], we denote by (${\bar{x}}_A,{\bar{y}}_A$) and (${\bar{x}}_L,{\bar{y}}_L$) the geometric centroid of the area under a catenary y = k cosh((x - c)/k) defined on this interval and the centroid of the curve itself, respectively. Then, it is well-known that ${\bar{x}}_L={\bar{x}}_A$ and ${\bar{y}}_L=2{\bar{y}}_A$. In this paper, we show that one of ${\bar{x}}_L={\bar{x}}_A$ and ${\bar{y}}_L=2{\bar{y}}_A$ characterizes the family of catenaries among nonconstant $C^2$ functions. Furthermore, we show that among nonconstant and nonlinear $C^2$ functions, ${\bar{y}}_L/{\bar{x}}_L=2{\bar{y}}_A/{\bar{x}}_A$ is also a characteristic property of catenaries.

  • In this study, the improved three-dimensional analysis model designed for a more accurate analysis of marine cable-supported structures, is presented. In this improved analysis model, the beam elements, of which the stability function is derived using Taylor's series expansions, are used to model space frame structures, and the truss elements. The equivalent elastic modulus of the truss elements is evaluated on the assumption that the deflection curve of a cable has a catenary function. By using the proposed three-dimensional analysis model, nonlinear static analysis is carried out for some cable-supported structures. The results are compared with previous studies and show good agreement with their findings.

  • Recent deepwater offshore structures in Gulf of Mexico utilize butt welded tubular joints. Application of welded tubular joint includes tendons, production risers, and steel catenary risers. Fatigue life assessment of these joints becomes more critical because the structures to which they are attached are allowed to undergo cyclic and sometimes large displacements around an anchored position. Estimating the fatigue behavior of these tubular members in the design stage is generally conducted by using S-N curves specified in the codes and standards. Applying the stress concentration factor of the welded structure to S-N approach often results in very conservative assessment because the stress field acting on the tubular has a non-uniform distribution through the thickness. Fracture mechanics and fitness for service (FFS) technology have been applied in the design of the catenary risers. This technology enables the engineer to establish proper requirements on weld quality and inspection acceptance criteria to assure satisfactory structural integrity during its design life. It also provides guidance on proper design curves to be used and a methodology for accounting for the effects of non-uniform stress distribution through the wall thickness. An attempt was made to develop set of S-N curves based on fracture mechanics approach by considering non-uniform stress distribution and a threshold stress intensity factor. Series of S-N curves generated from this approach were compared to the existing S-N curves. For flat plate butt joint, the S-N curve generated from fracture mechanics matches with the IIW class 100 curve when initial crack depth was 0.5 mm (0.02"). Similar comparison with API X′ was made for tubular joint.. These initial crack depths are larger than the limits of inspection by current Non-destructive examination (NDE) means, such as Automatic Ultrasonic Inspection (AUT). Thus a safe approach can be taken by specifying acceptance criteria that are close to limits of sizing capability of the selected NDE method. The comparison illustrates conservatism built into the S-N design curve.

  • Superimposition of horizontal and vertical curves may hamper the ride comfort and the running stability of train and largely affect the maintenance cost. However, in many cases, it's not easy to make a track plan because of the fixed points (bridge, tunnel, turnout, catenary system, etc.) to be avoided due to the geographic conditions or to be passed for utilization of existing structures. In this study, when the horizontal and vertical curves are superimposed, in order to optimize the horizontal curve in aspect of the ride comfort, the object function $P_{CT}$ was developed and verified by vehicle dynamic analysis. Also, the solution algorithm for simplified evaluation method was presented.

  • A trial run of locally-developed tilting train has been in process on Chungbuk line since the test vehicle was first produced. For the system stabilization, interface verification among the systems including track, structure, catenary and signaling system, not to mention the rolling stock, is very crucial. Therefore, in this study, the dynamic rail force of the tilting (Hanvit 200), high-speed (KTX) and general (Mugunghwa) vehicle caused by driving in transition curve track was measured. And, it compared the tilting response with the other by using the measured wheel load data in transition curve track, and then evaluated probability the range of wheel load fluctuation for the variable dynamic vertical and lateral wheel load. As a result, a range of wheel load by occured a change of cant from the high-speed and general vehicle which had fixed bogie structure was distributed throughout small deviation (${\Delta}8{\sim}13kN$). Otherwise, in case of the tilting train which was consisted of the pendulum bogie structure was distributed wide range about large deviation (${\Delta}25{\sim}28kN$) by changed of cant.

  • This paper presents a mooring design procedure for a floating offshore wind turbine. Offshore environmental data for Jeju are taken from KHOA (Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration) and used for the environmental conditions in numerical analyses. A semi-submersible-type floating wind system with a 5-MW-class wind turbine studied by the DeepCwind Consortium is applied. Catenary mooring with a studless chain is chosen as the mooring system. Design deliverables such as the nominal sizes of chain and length of the mooring line are decided by considering the long-term prediction of the breaking strength of the mooring lines where a 100-year return period is used. The designed mooring system is verified using a fatigue calculation based on rain-flow cycle counting, an S-N curve, and a Miner's damage summation of rule. The mooring tension process is obtained from time-domain motion analyses using ANSYS/AQWA.
