  • Multiple sequence alignments showed that the prolines at the 25th, 129th, 153rd, 242nd, 322nd, and 434th amino acids in 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) from Agrobacterium sp. strain CP4 are strongly conserved in various prokaryotic EPSPS proteins. Single point mutations of the conserved prolines to alanine (P25A, P153A, P242A, P322A, and P434A) were introduced in the CP4 EPSPS in order to investigate the importance of the conserved prolines for the enzyme properties. The point mutations caused decreases in substrate binding affinity and catalytic efficiency as well as the glyphosate resistance, in general. Especially, the 25th and 242nd prolines located in the polypeptide hinges connecting top and bottom domains of CP4 EPSPS as well as the 434th proline at the C-terminus of the enzyme turned out to be crucial for the enzyme activity.

  • Nickel was used as a catalyst for the hydrogen electrode in alkaline fuel cell. The optimum electrolyte concentration and recommendable operating temperature identified from polarization curves were 6N KOH and $80^{\circ}C$, respectively. Comparing the conductivity, apparent porosity and current density at porous hydrogen electrode manufactured with various PTFE additions, the proper content of PTFE was 10wt%. Chemisorption was carried out to define the appropriate surface area. The electrode produced with 10wt% of PTFE and sintered at $340^{\circ}C$ showed more than $200mA/cm^2$ of current density. The morphology of electrode surface was investigated with SEM. Cold pressing, hot pressing, rolling and calendering methods were carried out for manufacturing the electrode, and electrochemical characteristics for each method was studied.

  • The electrodes are usually made of a porous mixture of carbon-supported platinum and ionomers. $SnO_2$ particles provide as supports that have been used for DMFCs, and it have high catalytic activities toward methanol oxidation. The main advantage of $SnO_2$ supported electrodes is that it has strong chemical interactions with metallic components. The high activity to a synergistic bifunctional mechanism in which Pt provides the adsorption sites for CO, while oxygen adsorbs dissociative on $SnO_2$. The reaction between the adsorbed species occurs at the Pt/$SnO_2$ boundary. The morphological observations were characterized by FESEM and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). $SnO_2$ particles crystallinity was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction (XRD). The surface bonded state of the $SnO_2$ particles and electrode materials were observed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electric properties of the Pt/$SnO_2$ catalyst for methanol oxidation have been investigated by the cyclic voltametry (CV) in 0.1M $H_2SO_4$ and 0.1M MeOH aqueous solution. The peak current density of methanol oxidation was increased as the $SnO_2$ content in the anode catalysts increased. Pt/$SnO_2$ catalysts improve the removal of CO ads species formed on the platinum surface during methanol electro-oxidation.

  • In this study, new dinuclear chiral Co (salen) complexes bearing $BF_3$ have been synthesized and their properties as the asymmetric catalyst have been examined. The NMR, UV and ESCA analyses were performed to determine the structure of synthesized catalysts. Their catalytic activity and selectivity have been demonstrated for the asymmetric ring opening of various terminal epoxides by hydrolytic kinetic resolution technology. The easily prepared dimeric complexes exhibited very high enantioselectivity for the asymmetric ring opening of epoxides with $H_2O$ nucleophile, providing enantiomerically enriched terminal epoxides (> 99 %ee). The dimeric structured chiral salen showed remakablely enhanced reactivity and may be employed substantially lower loadings than its monomeric analogues, and in addition no racemization happened during the separation of product epoxides. The system described in this work is very efficient for the sinthesis of chiral epoxide and 1,2-diol intermediates.

  • The artificial shells of hard inorganic nanocomposites on individual cells would protect the cells physically and chemically, and control cell division. These emerging properties could be combined with cell-surface functionalizations for applications to cell-based sensors and assays as well as for fundamental studies on single-cell biology. In this work, individual Chlorella cells were encapsulated within a silica/titania nanocomposite shell in a biocompatible fashion that utilized a designed peptide, RKKRKKRKKRKKDDDDDDDD, as a catalytic template for formation of both $SiO_2$ and $TiO_2$ on the cell surface. The cell viability was maintained, and the division of the encapsulated Chlorella cells was controlled. The cell viability was enhanced compared with the $TiO_2$-shell formation. In addition, the incorporation of $TiO_2$ to the shell made it possible to anchor the ligands of interest to the shell via catechol chemistry. All in all, the combination of biological $SiO_2$ and abiolgical $TiO_2$ for the shell formation gave more tunability of the artificial shells compared with the $SiO_2$ or $TiO_2$ shells only.

  • Since the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have extraordinary material properties, many researchers are trying to make a practical application in various fields [1]. In particular, the high surface area of CNTs was fascinated for nano-template on the catalytic system. $RuO_2$ coated CNTs are useful functional nano-composites in many applications, including super capacitors, fuel cells, biosensors, and field emitters. However, the research of interaction between CNTs and $RuO_2$ was not satisfied with various fields [2]. In this study, we will introduce the change of chemical and electrical state of $RuO_2$/CNTs at different temperatures by synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SRPES). The t-MWCNTs used in this experiment were grown on the Ni/TiN/Si substrates by chemical vapor deposition. $RuO_2$ of 4-20 nm in thickness was deposited on the t-MWNTs by sputter. The SRPES measurements were carried out at the 4B1 beamline of the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory in Korea. The result of XPS measurement indicates that the deposited $RuO_2$ on the CNTs was reduced into pure Ru at above $300^{\circ}C$. And we confirmed that the effective work function of $RuO_2$/CNTs was decreased with increasing temperature.

  • Carbon nanofiber (CNF) composites coated with spindle-shaped $Fe_2O_3$ nanoparticles (NPs) are fabricated by a combination of an electrospinning method and a hydrothermal method, and their morphological, structural, and chemical properties are measured by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. For comparison, CNFs and spindle-shaped $Fe_2O_3$ NPs are prepared by either an electrospinning method or a hydrothermal method, respectively. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) fabricated with the composites exhibit enhanced open circuit voltage (0.70 V), short-circuit current density ($12.82mA/cm^2$), fill factor (61.30%), and power conversion efficiency (5.52%) compared to those of the CNFs (0.66 V, $11.61mA/cm^2$, 51.96%, and 3.97%) and spindle-shaped $Fe_2O_3$ NPs (0.67 V, $11.45mA/cm^2$, 50.17%, and 3.86%). This performance improvement can be attributed to a synergistic effect of a superb catalytic reaction of spindle-shaped $Fe_2O_3$ NPs and efficient charge transfer relative to the one-dimensional nanostructure of the CNFs. Therefore, spindle-shaped $Fe_2O_3$-NP-coated CNF composites may be proposed as a potential alternative material for low-cost counter electrodes in DSSCs.

  • This study presents the effect of oxygen on the $NH_3$ selective catalytic reduction (SCR) by Mn/$TiO_2$ catalyst. The lattice oxygen of catalysts is participate in the low temperature SCR, and the gaseous oxygen directly takes part in the rexoidtion of reduced catalyst. These redox properties of oxygen an play important role in SCR activity and the available capability of lattice oxygen depends on the manganese oxidation state of the catalyst surface. $MnO_2$ species has a higher redox property than that of $Mn_2O_3$ species on deposited $TiO_2$ surface and these manganese oxide states strongly depend on the $TiO_2$ surface area.

  • Detection of $CO_2$ gas in both indoor and outdoor atmospheres is now becoming an important issue because of greenhouse effect and climate crisis. In this study, gas sensors based on $SnO_2-Cr_2O_3$ composite nanofibers were fabricated by the electrospinning method to detect $CO_2$ gas. The gas sensors showed a response to ppm level of $CO_2$ gas from room temperature to $200^{\circ}C$ while the highest response was observed at $150^{\circ}C$. The gas response is enhanced by the catalytic property of $Cr_2O_3$. Selective $CO_2$ detection is obtained through the chemical reaction of $Cr_2O_3$ to chromium carbonate. All the results suggest the $SnO_2-Cr_2O_3$ composite material is promising for the use of $CO_2$ gas sensors.
