The Fe/MgO catalysts with different Fe loadings (1, 4, 6, 15 and 30 wt% Fe) were prepared by a wet impregnation with iron nitrate as precursor. All of the catalysts were characterized by BET surface analyzer, X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The maximum removal capacity of $H_2S$ was obtained with 15 wt% Fe/MgO catalyst which had the highest BET surface area among the measured catalysts. XRD of Fe/MgO catalysts showed that well dispersed Fe particles could be present on Fe/MgO with Fe loadings below 15 wt%. The crystallites of bulk $\alpha$-$Fe_2O_3$ became evident on 30 wt% Fe/MgO, which were confirmed by XRD. TPR profiles showed that the reducibility of Fe/MgO was strongly related to the loaded amounts of Fe on MgO support. Therefore, the highest removal efficiency of $H_2S$ in wet oxidation could be ascribed to a good dispersion and high reducibility of Fe/MgO catalyst. XPS studies indicated that the $H_2S$ oxidation with Fe/MgO could proceed via the redox mechanism ($Fe^{3+}\;{\leftrightarrow}\;Fe^{2+}$).

We sdudied effect of additives on catalytic activity in thermal catalytic de-NOx process which was composed of thermal reduction, catalytic reduction and catalytic oxidation stage. Pd-Pt/${\gamma}$-$Al_2O_3$ catalysts with the addition of transition metals(Co, Cu, Fe, Ni, W, Zn, Zr) and rare earth metals(Ce, Sr) were prepared by the conventional washcoating method. Those catalysts were characterized by CO pulse chemisorption, ICP, $N_2$ adsorption, SEM and XRD. The effect of catalyst additives on NOx removal for diesel emission was studied in thermal catalytic de-NOx process at reduction temperature(350~50$0^{\circ}C$), space velocity(5,000~20,000 $hr^{-1}$) and the engine load(0~120kW). The concentraton of CO, $CO_2$, NO and $NO_2$ in the exhaust gas increased with the engine load. On the other hand the concentration of $O_2$ decreased. The de-NOx activityof all prepared catalysts increased with respect to high CO and low $O_2$ level in the thermal reduction stage of the process. Insertion of Ce to Pt-Pd/${\gamma}$-$Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed the best activity of all the catalysts under these experimental conditions. De-NOx catalysts are effective to remove CO in addition to NOx in the catalytic reduction stage.

The glycerol carbonate was synthesized by glycerol and urea using metal oxide catalysts. The physical properties of the prepared metal oxide catalysts were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific surface area analysis (BET), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). In addition, we confirmed the conversion of the glycerol and the yield of the glycerol carbonate according to characteristics of metal oxide catalysts. From XRD and FE-SEM analysis, the crystallite size and crystallinity of metal oxide catalysts decrease with addition of Al. In addition, the Zn-Al mixed metal oxide had higher catalytic activity than the pure ZnO due to decreased side reaction in the synthesis of glycerol carbonate.
Cryogel and aerogel Pt-Ru/C were synthesized by the sol-gel process for the electrooxidation of methanol. From XRD analysis, it was found that the catalysts had highly dispersed Pt-Ru alloys on carbon support although high temperature treatments have been conducted. Electrocatalytic activities of 3 type aerogel catalysts were investigated in half cell experiments by cyclic voltammetry. Among them, Phloroglucinol-Formaldehyde(PF) type catalyst shows the highest activity. From the results of deactivation test for each catalysts, the aerogel catalysts are found to have excellent durability compared with those prepared by colloidal method.

In order to suggest an efficient catalyst systems for NOx reduction of flue gases from industrial boilers, $TiO_2$ supported $WO_3-V_2O_5, V_2O_5$ and $WS_2$ catalysts were tested for the performances of NOx reduction at high reactin temperature range (250-500$^\circ$C) using a simulated flue gas system. It was found that while the proposed $WO_3/TiO_2$ and $WO_3-V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalysts showed a significant high NOx reduction efficiency at about 350-400$^\circ$C, the conventional commercial catalyst of $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ showed a significant drop in NOx reduction efficiency due to the excessive $NH_3$ oxidation. From the measurement of surface acidities of those catalysts, it was found that the acidity are well correlated with the activities of NOx reduction. The reason of high activity of $WO_3$ series catalysts at high reaction temperature seems due to the low value of surface excess oxygen compared with that of $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ seems equivalent to the acid site of that catalyst.

Cobalt catalysts for gas mask loaded on various supports such as $Al_{2}O_{3},\;TiO_{2}$, AC(activated carbon) and $SiO_{2}$ were used to examine influences of calcination temperatures and reaction temperatures for CO oxidation. $Co(NO_{3})_2{\cdot}6H_{2}O$ was used as cobalt precursor and the catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation. The catalysts were characterized using XRD, TGA/DTA, TEM, $N_{2}$ sorption, and XPS. For the catalytic activity, support was in the order of ${\gamma}-Al_{2}O_{3}>TiO_{2}>SiO_{2}>AC\;and\;Al_{2}O_{3}$. The catalytic activity at lower temperature than $80^{\circ}C$ showed that with the increase of reaction temperature, cobalt catalysts on ${\gamma}-Al_{2}O_{3},\;TiO_{2},\;AC\$ has the negative activation energy but that of $SiO_{2}$ was positive.

Fluorene-containing, spiro-type, conjugated polymers were synthesized via the cyclopolymerization of dipropargylfluorenes (2-substituted, X=H, Br, Ac, $ NO_{2}$) with various transition metal catalysts. The polymerization of dipropargylfluorenes proceeded well using Mo-based catalysts to give a high polymer yield. The catalytic activities of the Mo-based catalysts were found to be more effective than those of W-based catalysts. The palladium (II) chloride also increased the polymer yield of the polymerization. The polymer structure of poly(dipropargylfluorene)s was characterized by such instrumental methods as NMR ($^{1}H_{-}$, $^{13}C_{-}$), IR, UV-visible spectroscopies, and elemental analysis as having the conjugated polymer backbone bearing fluorene moieties. The $^{13}C_{-}$NMR spectral data on the quaternary carbon atoms in polymers indicated that the conjugated cyclopolymers have the six-membered rings majorly. The poly(dipropargylfluorene) derivatives were completely soluble in halogenated and aromatic hydrocarbons such as methylene chloride, chloroform, benzene, toluene, and chlorobenzene. The poly(dipropargylfluorene) derivatives were thermally more stable than poly(dipropargylfluorene) itself, and X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that the polymers are mostly amorphous. The photoluminescence peaks of the polymers were observed at about 457-491 nm, depending on the substituents of fluorene moieties.
A series of bimetallic Cu-Zn/$SiO_2$ catalysts were prepared via thermal decomposition of the as-synthesized $CuZn(OH)_4(H_2SiO_3)_2{\cdot}nH_2O$ hydroxides precursors. This highly dispersed Cu-solid base catalyst is extremely effective for hydrogenation of ethyl acetate to ethanol. The reduction and oxidation features of the precursors prepared by coprecipitation method and catalysts were extensively investigated by TGA, XRD, TPR and $N_2$-adsorption techniques. Catalytic activity by ethyl acetate hydrogenation of reaction temperatures between 120 and $300^{\circ}C$, different catalyst calcination and reduction temperatures, different Cu/Zn loadings have been examined extensively. The relation between the performance for hydrogenation of ethyl acetate and the structure of the Cu-solid base catalysts with Zn loading were discussed. The detected conversion of ethyl acetate reached 81.6% with a 93.8% selectivity of ethanol. This investigation of the Cu-Zn/$SiO_2$ catalyst provides a recently proposed pathway for ethyl acetate hydrogenation reaction to produce ethanol over Cu-solid base catalysts.
In this study, several nickel catalysts for the steam-hydrocarbon reforming process were prepared from various nickel salt, magnesium oxide, alumina and kaolinite. The activity and strength of the catalysts were investigated. 1. The proper composition of the calcined catalysts are: NiO (5-15%)-MgO(10-20%)-$Al_2O_3$(10-40%)-Kaolinite(50-80%). 2. The admixed or cosedimented ingredients of the catalysts was pelletized and calcinated at 1000 or $1150^{\circ}C$. Calcination at $1150^{\circ}C$ for an hour was optimum. 3. The water to oil ratio (W/O) for reforming of hexane should be above 7 mole/mole. As the W/O increases, more carbon dioxide and hydrogen, but less carbon monoxide was produced. Also carbon deposition become lessen at higher W/O. 4. Maximum conversion had attained at about $850^{\circ}C$. As the reaction temperature increases, more carbon monoxide and hydrogen, but less carbon dioxide and lower hydrocarbon was produced. 5. The percent conversion at $850^{\circ}C$ was about 80%, using a catalyst which the nickel oxide content are 5%.

In this study, in order to make up its draw-back in Cu-ZSM-5 catalytic system, some of transition metals or alkaline earth metals were cocation-exchanged in Cu-ZSM-5. Among various cocation-ion-exchanged ZSM-5 catalysts, Mg/Cu-ZSM-5 has been found the most active and durable in NOx reduction even at high oxygen content as well as at the presence of water vapor. The role of Mg in ZSM-5 is supposed to prevent the dealumination of aluminum ions in super-cage even at harsh hydro-thermal conditions, and also it seems to stabilize the Cu ions in the structure. In order to prepare commercially available catalysts, Mg/Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts were wash-coated on the surface of honeycomb type monolith, and tested in terms of catalytic activities. As a result, it was found that the catalyst prepared bt the wash-coating showed satisfactorily high NOx conversion for the practical use in SCR process.
