Intensive works have been carried out to develop more efficient solid catalysts for biodiesel production from various feedstocks including refined oils and waste fats. Among many catalysts, metal oxides and ion exchange resins are the most intensively studied ones. With regard to metal oxide catalysts, major research activities have focused on the identification of the active compounds and their immobilizing methods on the supports. As metal oxide catalysts have strong thermal stability, they may be used in simultaneous transesterification and esterification of waste fats. However, ion exchange resin catalysts were mainly applied in the esterification of the free fatty acids in waste fats because of their lower thermal stability. For both solid catalysts, further works are needed to make them to be used in commercial process. Especially fast deactivation of the solid catalyst would be the most challenging problem.

ZnO with different morphologies can be used various application depending on their shapes. Different morphologies of ZnO structures were synthesized by a catalysis-free thermal evaporation process. Their morphologies were dependent on the distance from the source to substrate on the same processing condition; in the result were products morphologies of the hollow, cage and star. Their shapes and crystalinity were evaluated by SEM and XRD, respectively. This work demonstrates what kind of growth factors would be involved in the final structure morphologies.

Single-crystalline $SnO_2$ nanowires were successfully grown on Si(001) substrates via vapor-liquid-solid mechanism in a thermal chemical vapor deposition. Large quantity of $SnO_2$ nanowires were synthesized at temperature ranges of $950{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ in Ar atmosphere. It was found that the grown $SnO_2$ nanowires are of a tetragonal rutile structure and single crystalline by diffraction and transmission electron microscopy measurements. Broad emission located at about 600 m from the grown nanowires was clearly observed in room temperature photoluminescence measurements, indicating that the emission band originated from defect level transition into $SnO_2$ nanowires.
In this work, the reaction characteristics for the non-catalytic esterification of palm fatty acid distillate were analyzed. The esterification reaction was assumed as the pseudo homogeneous $2^{nd}$ order reversible reaction and 'reaction effectiveness factor (${\eta}$)' was used to take accounts into evaporation and reaction of water and methanol, which take place simultaneously in the liquid phase. The nonlinear programming was used to derive appropriate kinetic parameters, the reaction rate constant and mass transfer coefficient, minimizing the error between experimental data and the numerical values. Based on these parameters, the apparent activation energy was calculated to be 43.98 kJ/mol.

Vertically well-aligned Ga-doped ZnO nanorods with different Ga contents were grown by thermal evaporation on a ZnO template. The Ga-doped ZnO nanorods synthesized with 50 wt % Ga with respect to the Zn content showed maximum compressive stress relative to the ZnO template, which led to a rapid growth rate along the c-axis due to the rapid release of stored strain energy. A further increase in the Ga content improved the conductivity of the nanorods due to the substitutional incorporation of Ga atoms in the Zn sites based on a decrease in lattice spacing. The p-n diode structure with Ga-doped ZnO nanorods, as a n-type, displayed a distinct white light luminescence from the side-view of the device, showing weak ultraviolet and various deep-level emissions.

이 때 In 의 migration을 억제하기 위해서 VLS mode 의 GaAs NWs 보다 As의 공급을 10배 이상 하였다. FE-SEM 분석 결과 GaAs NWs는 Ga droplet을 확인 할 수 있었고 InAs NWs는 droplet이 존재하지 않았다. GaAs와 InAs NW는 density와 length가 V/III가 높을수록 증가 하였다.

Transition metal-based organometallic complexes have shown great talents as a catalyst in various reactions. Designing organic molecules and coordinating them to such active centers have been a promising route to control the catalytic natures. Metallocene, which has transition metal atoms sandwiched by aromatic rings, is one of the representative systems for organometallic catalysts. Group 4-based metallocene catalysts have been most commonly used for the production of polyolefins, which have great world-wide markets in the real life. Graphenes and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were composed of extended $sp^2$ carbon networks, showing high electron mobility as well as have extremely large steric bulkiness relative to metal centers. We were inspired by these characteristics of such carbon-based nano-materials and assumed that they could intimately interact with active centers of metallocene catalysts. We examined this hypothesis and, recently, reported that CNTs dramatically changed catalytic natures of group 4-based catalysts when they formed hybrid systems with such catalysts. In conclusion, we produced hybrid materials composed of group-4 based metallocenes, $Cp_2ZrCl_2$ and $Cp_2TiCl_2$, and carbon-based nano-materials such as RGO and MWCNT. Such hybrids were generated via simple adsorption between Cp rings of metallocenes and graphitic surfaces of graphene/CNT. The hybrids showed interesting catalytic behaviors for ethylene polymerizations. Resulting PEs had significantly increased Mw relative to those produced from free metallocene-based catalytic systems, which are not adsorbed on carbon-based nano-materials. UHMWPEs with extremely high Mw were obtained at low Tp.

In the present study, we successfully developed an eco-friendly chemical etching solution and proper condition for plating on ABS material. The mechanism of forming Ni plating layer on ABS substrate is known as following. In general, the etching solution used for the etching process is a solution of chromic acid and sulfuric acid. The etching solution is given to the surface resulting in elution of butadiene group, so-called anchor effect. Such a rough surface can easily adsorb catalyst resulting in the increase of adhesion between ABS substrate and Ni plating layer. However a use of chromic acid is harmful to environment. It is, therefore, essential to develop a new alternative solution. In the present study, we proposed an eco-friendly etching solution composed of potassium permanganate, sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid. This solution was testified to observe the surface microstructure and the pore size of electrical Ni plating layer, and the adhesive correlation between deposited layers fabricated by electro Ni plating was confirmed. The result of the present study, the newly developed, eco-friendly etching solution, which is a mixture of potassium permanganate 25 g/L, sulfuric acid 650ml/L and phosphoric acid 250ml/L, has a similar etching effect and adhesion property, compared with the commercially used chromium acid solution in the condition at $70^{\circ}C$ for 5 min.

The seed step-coverage enhancement process (SSEP) using Pd/Cu/PVP colloids was investigated for the filling of through silicon via (TSV) without void. TEM analysis showed that the Pd/Cu nano-particles were well dispersed in aqueous solution with the average diameter of 6.18 nm. This Pd/Cu nano-particles were uniformly deposited on the substrate of Si/$SiO_2$/Ti wafer using electrophoresis with the high frequency Alternating Current (AC). After electroless Cu deposition on the substrate treated with Pd/Cu/PVP colloids, the adhesive property between deposited Cu layer and substrate was evaluated. The Cu deposit obtained by SSEP with Pd/Cu/PVP colloids showed superior adhesion property to that on Pd ion catalyst-treated substrate. Finally, by implementing the SSEP using Pd/Cu/PVP colloids, we achieved 700% improvement of step coverage of Cu seed layer compared to PVD process, resulting in void-free filling in high aspect ratio TSV.
Effect of poly(propylene-co-octene) as a compatibilizer in toughened polypropylene/ poly(ethylene-co-octene) (EOC) was investigated. The EOCs used were metallocene catalyzed commercial linear low density polyethylene and they are elastomeric materials. The poly(propylene-co-octene) was synthesized by metallocene catalyst in our laboratory to be used as a compatibilizer in PP/EOC blends. PP/EOC blends without compatibilizer shows very low mechanical properties in specimens with weldlines while incorporation of a compatibilizer significantly increases the mechanical properties of specimens with weldlines. However, compatibilized PP/EOC blends does not show increased impact property in a weldline free specimen and it is attributed to low molecular weight of the poly(propylene-co-octene) synthesized in present study. It is expected that the poly(propylene-co-octene) having increased molecular weight provides very good performance as an effective compatibilizer in toughened polypropylene/EOC blends.
