다문화 장서에 대한 목록 구축의 경험과 교훈 (Lesson from the Cataloging Experience on Multicultural Collection)

  • 이 연구는 최근 다문화도서관이나 도서관에서의 다문화서비스에 대한 관심이 증가함에 따라 현실적인 문제로 다가오고 있는 '다문화 장서의 목록 구축'에 대한 문제를 논의하고자 하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 특히 이 연구에서는 "(사)아시아공동체 부설 국제어린이도서관"에서 소장하고 있는 1만 여권의 다문화 장서에 대한 목록 구축 경험에 기초하여 향후 다문화 장서의 목록 구축에 적용할수 있는 체험적 방안을 도출하고자 하였다. 구체적으로, 이 연구에서는 (1) 그동안 다문화 장서의 목록 구축에 관한 국내외 도서관계의 기존 논의를 추적하고, (2) 현재 우리나라의 공공도서관과 대학도서관, 그리고 민간도서관에서 경험하고 있는 다문화 장서 목록 구축의 사례와 북미 도서관계의 사례를 비교하여 살펴본 다음, (3) 실제 목록 구축의 경험을 통해 향후 우리 도서관계에서 다문화 장서의 목록을 체계적으로 구축하기 위한 방안과 향후 과제에 대해 논의하였다.

온라인 자료의 인용 및 참고문헌 수록 양식과 국내 대학 및 학술잡지에서 사용하고 있는 인용 및 참고문헌 수록 양식 조사연구 (A Study on the Documentation Styles of Online Resources and the Documentation Styles Suggested by Graduate Schools and Scholarly Journals in Korea)

  • 현재 온라인 정보원을 이용하지 않을 수 없는 상황이 되고 있지만 이를 인용하는 방법과 참고문헌에 수록하는 양식이 국내에서는 아직 널리 소개되어 있지 않다. 특히 인터넷을 통해 얻은 자료를 논문에 인용하고 이를 다른 사람들이 찾아볼 수 있도록 참고문헌으로 제시하는 방법을 몰라서 어려움을 겪고 있는 상황이다. 본고에서는 연구논문이나 레포트를 쓸 때 참고할 수 있도록 미국 학계에서 많이 사용하고 있는 미국심리학괴(APA) 양식과 미국언어학회(MLA) 양식에 제시된 최근의 온라인 정보원의 인용 및 참고문헌 수록 방법을 조사하여 소개하였다. 또 국내 학계에서는 어떤 방식으로 온라인 정보원을 이용하고 이를 참고문헌으로 제시하는 지를 알아보기 위하여 대학요람에 실린 학위논문 작성 요령과 학회지에 실린 논문 투고 요령을 조사하였다. 1998년도까지 발행된 대학요람이나 학회지의 논문 투고 요령을 조사해 본 결과 온라인 자료의 인용 및 참고문헌 수록방법에 대해 언급한 곳은 없으며, 또한 전통적으로 많이 사용되고 있는 미국심리학회(APA) 양식, 시카고대학 양식(Chicago Manual of Style) 중 어느 하나를 정확하게 일관성있게 지키는 경우는 많지 않았다. 대부분의 경우 어떤 표준양식을 따르는 지를 알 수 없을 정도로 여러 양식을 혼합하여 사용하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

  • 인터넷 환경에서 정보검색의 기본적인 사안은 선택된 언어의 문자와 긴밀한 연관을 갖고있다. 매큔-라이샤워시스템은 학술적 및 비학술적 적용을 위한 국제표준으로서, 목록 및 검색시 이용되고 있을 뿐만 아니라 대부분의 한국자료 이용자들에게서 널리 사용되고 있다. 현재 ISO, UNGEGN, LC, ALA, BL, 영국지명위원회와 유럽, 호주, 캐나다 등의 유관기관들은 모두 매큔-라이샤워시스템을 채택하여 사용하고 있다. 따라서 현재 도서관 일각에서 진행하려고 시도하는 2000년식 새한글로마자시스템으로의 표기방식 전환은 도서관 목록과 온라인DB 등에서 많은 혼란을 일으키게 할 것이다. 본 논문에서는 국제기관에서의 이 분야에 대한 노력을 소개하고, 현재 사용하고 있는 상세한 규정을 통하여 로마자시스템을 심층적으로 분석, 소개하여 향후 이 문제를 둘러싼 한국 도서관계가 현명한 판단과 대처를 할 수 있도록 연구결과를 제시하였다.

  • The objective of this article is to examine the possibility of 'story-telling' as united concept of causality and subjectivity through sequence combination, and the 'similarity' between object and image in fashion photographs making diversity of meanings. To analyze and investigate the research, as evidential data this paper used the photos of Steven Meisel from 2002 till 2007 Vogue published in Korea, U.S, and Italy, as well as other visual data like graphic collections, catalogs, art-related data and internet data. This research runs both theoretical and positive investigations to suggest the function of story-telling in the Process of opened-communicative roles of fashion photos. Thus this paper investigated Steven Meisel's storytelling in his fashion photos; short moment of event, continuity of time, compound of sequence, and complexity of viewpoint. This paper also studied the aesthetic characteristics of Steven Meisel's fashion photos as categories of overlapped meaning, arbitrariness of interpretation, exclusivity of message, and decoding. The research result suggests that clothing not only includes current age's value but also among social constitutions it includes multilateral characteristics. Ultimately this paper is also making meaning alive by cutting off the chain of 'firm' meanings of fashion photo. That seems like opening the opportunity for correctly understanding fashion's meaning which has the aspects of ambivalence of changing meanings and values by the motivation of context and text.

DEEP-South: Performance of Moving Object Detection Program in Different Observation Modes

  • We have five different types of observation modes with regard to the Deep Ecliptic Patrol of the Southern Sky (DEEP-South); Opposition Census (OC) for targeted photometry, Sweet Spot Survey (S1) for discovery and orbit characterization of Atens and Atiras, Ecliptic Survey (S2) for asteroid family studies and comet census, NEOWISE follow-up (NW) for near simultaneous albedo measurements in the visible bands, and Target of Opportunity (TO) observation for follow-up either for unpredictable events or targets of special interests. Different exposures with such different modes result in a wide range of background noise level, the number of background stars and the mover's projected speed in each image. The Moving Object Detection Program (MODP) utilizes multiple mosaic images being taken for the same target fields at different epochs at the three KMTNet sites. MODP employs existing software packages such as SExtractor (Source-Extractor) and SCAMP (Software for Calibrating Astrometry and Photometry); SExtractor generates object catalogs, while SCAMP conducts precision astrometric calibration, then MODP determines if a point source is moving. This package creates animated stamp images for visual inspection with MPC reports, the latter for checking whether an object is known or unknown. We evaluate the astrometric accuracy and efficiency of MODP using the year one dataset obtained from DEEP-South operations.

정보사회의 도서관봉사 (Library Services in Information Society)

  • As information technologies are applied to the libraries in information society, the library services have been changing its feature. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore and to establish a paradigm of the library services in information society. It is hypothesized that the application of information technologies leads to the change of the library services in information society. To prove the hypothesis, the data were collected from various research results carried out in the developed countries and by observing various libraries where the information technologies are extensively applied. The findings are as follows: 1. As information technologies are applied to the library, many new library services emerge for the society. 2. As the electronic data replace the paper data, the collection of a library becomes the collection of the libraries in the world. Therefore, the accessibility to the information network is more important than to own information in the library. Librarians select various electronic data according to the library policy which distinguishes their own library collection from others. The policy also solves the various problems related to weeding and preserving library collection. And the use of CD-ROM selection tools enable library users to select their own data. Now, the censorship becomes the concems of the library users, not the library. 3. The catalogs are reorganized for the electronic data for the international use. The most important information in the catalog is the location of the data and the multi access to the data are necessary. 4. As the information technologies are applied in book selection, cataloguing, information retreival and circulation, the library users are enable to service themselves in the library. And most of the routine works related to the information service are taken over by the library staffs. Professional librarians engage in user education, information marketing and fund raising. 5. Public libraries in information society serves those who have no access to the information. They help the illiterates. patients in the hospital, prisoners, and homeless in the city. Therefore, the information technologies enhance the role of librarians in professional work in the library as well as in the information society.

FIMS 관측 자료의 위치보정 알고리즘 개발 (ALGORITHM DEVELOPMENT FOR POSITION CORRECTIONS OF FIMS DATA)

  • The FIMS(Far-ultraviolet IMaging Spectrograph), the main payload onboard the first Korean Science Technology SATellite, STSAT-1, has performed various astronomical observations, including the Cygnus Loop, Vela supernova remnants, LMC(Large Magellanic Cloud), since its launch on September 2003. It has been found that the attitude information provided by spacecraft bus system has the errors of more than about 10-15 arcmins due to the time offset problem and errors in attitude knowledge. We develop an algorithm for correction of position errors in FIMS data. The aspect for the FIMS data is determined by comparing the positions of observed bright stars with the Tycho-II and TD-1 catalogs. The position errors of the bright stars along the scanning (${\gamma}$) and spatial (${\delta}$) directions were considered as functions of ${\delta}$, ignoring errors in position angle. The corrected positions of the bright stars coincided very well to their Tycho-II and TD-I positions. The correction algorithm is essential for the FIMS data analysis, and is being used for the FIMS data analysis.

A Study of Globular Cluster Systems in the Coma, Fornax, and Virgo Clusters of Galaxies from HST ACS and WFC3/IR Imaging

  • I present new near-infrared (NIR) photometry of globular cluster (GC) systems associated to a cD galaxy NGC 4874 in the core of the Coma cluster and 16 early-type galaxies in the Fornax and Virgo clusters of galaxies using the Infrared Channel of the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3/IR) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Combining these high-resolution NIR data with new HST Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) optical photometry for NGC 4874 and existing ACS GC catalogs from the ACS Fornax and Virgo Cluster Surveys, I have examined for the first time the GC systems in a statistically significant optical/NIR sample of galaxies spanning a wide range of luminosities and colors. A primary goal of this study is to explore empirically whether the distributions of purely optical and hybrid optical - NIR color indices for extragalactic GCs have different forms and whether the relations between these color indices are nonlinear, indicating that they behave differently with underlying metallicity. I find that some GC systems of large galaxies in our sample show color bimodalities that differ between the optical and optical - NIR colors, in the sense that they have disparate ratios of "blue" and "red" peak GCs, as well as differing ratios in their color dispersions. Consistent with these results, I find empirically that the dependence of hybrid optical-NIR color on purely optical color is nonlinear, with an inflection at intermediate metallicities. These findings underscore the importance of understanding the nature of galaxy-to-galaxy variations in the GC color distributions and color-color relations, as well as the exact forms of the color-metallicity transformations, in interpreting the observational data on GC color bimodality. Our ACS data for NGC 4874 shows that its GC system exhibits a very strong blue tilt, implying a very steep mass-metallicity scaling, and the centroid of this GC system is offset by $4{\pm}1kpc$ from the luminosity center of NGC 4874, in the direction of NGC 4872. Finally, I discuss the asymmetrical GC distribution around a dwarf elliptical galaxy in Coma that has a very high relative velocity with respect to the cluster mean at small clustercentric radius.

  • Post-genomics may be defined in different ways depending on how one views the challenges after the genome. A popular view is to follow the concept of the central dogma in molecular biology, namely from genome to transcriptome to proteome. Projects are going on to analyze gene expression profiles both at the mRNA and protein levels and to catalog protein 3D structure families, which will no doubt help the understanding of information in the genome. However complete, such catalogs of genes, RNAs, and proteins only tell us about the building blocks of life. They do not tell us much about the wiring (interaction) of building blocks, which is essential for uncovering systemic functional behaviors of the cell or the organism. Thus, an alternative view of post-genomics is to go up from the molecular level to the cellular level, and to understand, what I call, the "interactome"or a complete picture of molecular interactions in the cell. KEGG (http://www.genome.ad.jp/kegg/) is our attempt to computerize current knowledge on various cellular processes as a collection of "generalized"protein-protein interaction networks, to develop new graph-based algorithms for predicting such networks from the genome information, and to actually reconstruct the interactomes for all the completely sequenced genomes and some partial genomes. During the reconstruction process, it becomes readily apparent that certain pathways and molecular complexes are present or absent in each organism, indicating modular structures of the interactome. In addition, the reconstruction uncovers missing components in an otherwise complete pathway or complex, which may result from misannotation of the genome or misrepresentation of the KEGG pathway. When combined with additional experimental data on protein-protein interactions, such as by yeast two-hybrid systems, the reconstruction possibly uncovers unknown partners for a particular pathway or complex. Thus, the reconstruction is tightly coupled with the annotation of individual genes, which is maintained in the GENES database in KEGG. We are also trying to expand our literature surrey to include in the GENES database most up-to-date information about gene functions.

실크로드의 중심 박트리아의 복식 연구 - 유물 분석을 중심으로 - (A Study on the Costume of Bactria, center of Silk Road - Focusing Analysis of Antiquities -)

  • Bactria was the intersection of transportation between Greece-Iran and Central Asia at the Silk Road. This kingdom was Greek in all of its ruling classes. Because the Greek culture of Bactria spread to India and the east, Bactria was a very important place in ancient civilizations. The purpose of this study is to understand the life and the various cultures of Bactria and the influence of Greek culture on the costumes of Bactria. The research method was approached through the analysis of the empirical data. Data on antiquities were analyzed in European exhibition catalogs and secondary data collected from Internet. The results of this study are as follows: First, the original costume of Bactria was identified in two styles in the reliefs of the Persian Achaemenid. One is the tunic jacket sarapis that goes down to the knee and wide trousers with half-length boots. The other is the Scythian style trousers that looks like a barrel in a Sarapis. Second, in the Bactrian coin depicting the bust of the Bactrians, the hair styles and headgear of the Bactrian kings were analyzed. The Bactrians wore braids with short curly hair and wore Macedonian hats and helmets on them. Third, the relics excavated from the ruins of Ai-Khanuom depicted the forms of the ruling classes of Bactria. The dress styles and hair styles of gods and priests were imitating the form of the Greek costume as it is.
