Microstructural and mechanical characteristics of Al-6Si-2Cu alloy for engine mount bracket prepared by gravity casting (as-cast) and die-casting (as-diecast) process have been investigated. For the microstructural characterization, the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) analyses are conducted. For the intermetallic phases, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) are also conducted with quantitative and qualitative analysis. Micro Vickers hardness and static tensile test are achieved in order to measure mechanical properties of alloys. Secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) of as-cast and as-diecast show 37um and 18um, respectively. A large amount of coarsen eutectic Si, $Al_2Cu$ intermetallic phase and Fe-rich phases are identified in the Al-6Si-2Cu alloy. Mechanical properties of gravity casting alloy are much higher than those of die-casting alloy. Especially, yield strength and elongation of gravity casting alloy show 2 times higher than die-casting alloy. After shot peening, shot peening refined the surface grains and Si particles of the alloys by plastic deformation. The surface hardness value shows that shot peening alloy has higher value than unpeening alloy.
The air gap between the metal and mold, formed by shrinkage during solidification, causes surface and subsurface cracks in the continuous casting process. Molten crack on the surface might also occur due to improper heat transfer between them. In order to compensate the air gap in mold design, the thermal contraction is an essential factor. In this study, the thermal contraction and expansion behaviors were examined from the ($\alpha$ and pearlite)/${\gamma}$ to ${\gamma}$/$\delta$ transformations in continuous casting steels by the commercial dilatometer and the self- assembled dilatometer with laser distance measurement. It was found that the thermal contraction and expansion behaviors were very dependant on the phase transformation of the ${\gamma}$/$\delta$ as well as ($\alpha$ and pearlite)/${\gamma}$. The sudden volume change from $\delta$ to ${\gamma}$ which might cause cracks in the continuous casting process, was observed on cooling just below the melting temperature by the self-assembled dilatometer.
In this report, we describe mold materials that were used to produce movable metal type by the investment casting method during the Joseon dynasty period in Korea. Samples were obtained from the Wibuinja collection, which is held by the National Museum of Korea. Most of the mold material remnants were found in the depressed areas of the movable type specimens, and we therefore performed non-destructive analyses including XRF, EDS, and XRD. Through these analyses, we were able to identify the mold remnants as hydrocerussite [trilead dihydroxide dicarbonate, $Pb_3(CO_3)_2(OH)_2$] formed in platy hexagonal crystallites. Hydrocerussite was first used to make white pigments and cosmetics in ancient Greece, but this is the first report of hydrocerussite used as mold material applied around a disposable pattern for investment casting. The results of this study will further the understanding of the production process for early movable metal type and ancient casting technologies.

In industry, several casting process are widely used to manufacture complex and accurate blank part of hard materials such as aluminum, casting steels, bronze and magnesium alloys which are difficult to manufacture in a blank shape. Even if the casting process does not high accuracy superior surface characteristics other machining process, the casting process is widely used in manufacturing blank part. Furthermore, it is difficult to select appropriate casting process a part among several casting process. for effective selection different process, a careful decision given casting application is necessary. An appropriate casting for a given material and shape condition must be selected for novice engineers in industry. In this paper, an expert system based on an analytic network process(ANP) is suggested for best selection of casting considering a prior interdependency effect among various factors such as material, geometry, process capability, economy and equipment.
In the present study, an EMC (Electromagnetic Casting) process, using a segmented Cu cold crucible under a high frequency alternating magnetic field of 20 kHz, was practiced for the fabrication of poly-crystalline Si ingot of 50 mm diameter. The effects of Joule heating and electromagnetic pressure in molten Si were systematically investigated with various processing parameters such as electric current and crucible configuration. A preliminary experimental work was initiated with the pure Al system for the establishment of a stabilized non-contact working condition, and further adapted to the semiconductor-off-grade Si system. A commercialized software such as Opera-3D was utilized in order to simulate electromagnetic pressure and Joule heating. In order to evaluate the meniscus shape of the molten melts, shape parameter was used throughout the research. A segmented graphite crucible, which was attached at the upper part of the cold crucible, was introduced to enhance significantly the heating efficiency of Si melt keeping non-contact condition during continuous melting and casting processes.
The microstructure and mechanical property of the Ni and Ni-Cr porous metal reinforced AC4C matrix composites fabricated by squeeze casting were investigated. In this study Ni, Ni-Cr porous metals which are estimated to be easy to fabricate by squeeze casting are used as strengtheners for composite materials. As a matrix material, Al-7wt.%Si-0.3wt.%Mg(AC4C) has been used. In case of Ni/AC4C and Ni-Cr/AC4C composite, $750^{\circ}C$ melt temperature and minimum 25MPa squeezing pressure are needed to produce sound composite materials. The observation of interfacial reaction zone at various heat treatment condition shows that atsolutionizing temperature of above $520^{\circ}C$, the interfacial reaction zone increases proportionally with heat treatment time and the reaction products formed by interfacial reactions are mainly composed by $Al_{3}Ni$ and $Al_{3}Ni_{2}$ phases.
This study deals about the development of fusible core with low melting temperature by addition of ceramic particles. A new concept of salt core was introduced to produce an integrated casting part having a complicated inner shape or requiring under-cut in high pressure die casting or squeeze casting process. The mechanical properties of fusible core were improved due to the addition of ceramic particles which helped to produce fine microstructure. The new technology for the preparation of new fusible core materials which possess high compression strength was established. Addition of ceramics particles increased the mechanical properties of fusible core materials. There was an increasing relationship between percentage of ceramic particles and mechanical strength was existed up to 60%.

This work will report a highly textured ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ ceramic by aqueous slip casting in a magnetic field and subsequent pressureless sintering, Effects of the sintering aids, polymer dispersant, pH and stirring time on the stability of the $Si_3N_4$ slurries were studied. The textured ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ with 97 % relative density could be obtained by slip casting in a magnetic field of 12 T and subsequent sintering at $1800^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The textured microstructure is featured by the alignment of c-axis of ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ crystals perpendicular to the magnetic field, and the Lotgering orientation factor, f, is determined to be 0.8.
Aluminum-based hybrid parts were fabricated through a compound casting process with Al or Cu inserts which can be used for applications requiring high conductivity. Because the interface stability between the insert and the aluminum matrix is important, the effects of process variables on the interfacial adhesion strength were investigated. Additions of Cu and Mg to Al melt were found to enhance the adhesion strength, though the melt fluidity was slightly deteriorated when a small amount of Mg was added. An isothermal heating process after casting further improved the strength. However AlCu intermetallic compounds formed and their thickness increased during the heating process. As a result, deterioration in the interfacial adhesion strength was observed after an excessive annealing treatment.
