  • In order to develop a new commercial Al-12%Si casting alloy with improved physical properties, we investigated the effect of adding Sr and TiB to the alloy. Al-12%Si alloys were prepared by die casting at $660^{\circ}C$. The eutectic temperature of the Sr-modified Al-12%Si alloy decreased to $9^{\circ}C$ and the mushy zone region increased. The shape of the Si phase changed from coarse acicula to fine fiber with the addition of Sr. The addition of TiB in the Al-12%Si alloy reduced the size of the primary ${\alpha}$-Al and eutectic Si phases. When Sr and TiB were added together, it worked more effectively in refinement and modification. The density of twins in the Si phase-doped Sr increased and the width of the twins was refined to 5 nm. These results are related to the impurity induced twinning(IIT) growth.

  • This study reports the influence of gadolinium (Gd) addition on mechanical and corrosion properties of 2205 duplex stainless steel. In all alloys produced, regardless of the initial Gd content, Gd-based inclusions were well distributed in the duplex stainless steel matrix. As the Gd content increased from 0 wt% to 0.19 wt%, the ultimate tensile strength and hardness of the alloy increased from 630 MPa to 977 MPa and from 57 to 61, respectively, while elastic modulus, tensile elongation and impact energy of the alloy decreased. The critical crevice temperatures of Alloy1, Alloy2 and Alloy3 were $20^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to analyze the retention force changes and wear behaviours of double-crown systems over long-term use. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ten groups, each consisting of six samples, were evaluated. Specifically, casting gold alloy primary crown - casting gold alloy secondary crown (AA), laser sintering primary crown - laser sintering secondary crown (LL), casting Cr alloy primary crown - casting Cr alloy secondary crown, (CC) zirconia primary crown - electroformed secondary crown (ZA), and CAD/CAM titanium alloy primary crown - CAD/CAM titanium alloy secondary crown (TT) groups were evaluated at cone angles of $4^{\circ}$ and $6^{\circ}$. The samples were subjected to 5,000 insertion-separation cycles in artificial saliva, and the retention forces were measured every 500 cycles. The wear levels were analyzed via SEM at the beginning and end of the 5,000 cycles. RESULTS. In all samples, the retention forces increased when the conus angle decreased. The highest initial and final retention force values were found in the $LL-4^{\circ}$ group (32.89 N-32.65 N), and the lowest retention force values were found in the $ZA6^{\circ}$ group (5.41 N-6.27 N). The ZA groups' samples showed the least change in the retention force, and no wear was observed. In the other groups, wear was observed mostly in the primary crowns. CONCLUSION. More predictable, clinically relevant, and less excursive retention forces can be observed in the ZA groups. The retention force values of the LL groups were statically similar to those of the other groups, except the ZA groups.

  • The solidification process of Al 4.5%Cu alloy is numerically studied in the presence of contact resistance between mold and cast. Natural convection is considered in the liquid and mushy regions. The porosity approach is applied to the mushy zone modeling and linear variation of the solid fraction on the temperature is assumed. Results show that the mushy region is wider in the case with a contact resistance compared to the perfect contact condition. The temperature of the cast with a temporal variation in the contact heat transfer coefficient changes very rapidly in the early stage of the casting process compared to that with constant contact heat transfer coefficient.

  • Functionally graded microstructure of centrifugal cast Al-Si alloy, especially distribution of primary Si particles according to the changes of melt pouring temperature and rotation frequency was investigated by numerical simulation. Moving velocity of Si particles increased as the melt pouring temperature and rotational frequency of mold increased. Therefore, segregation tendency of primary Si particles toward inner side of cylindrical sample increased as the melt pouring temperature and rotational frequency of mold increased. Rich distribution region of particles was located at 0.9, 0.7, 0.4 mm from inner surface of cylindrical sample under the centrifugal cast condition of $750^{\circ}C$ melt pouring temperature and 1500, 2000 and 2500 rpm mold rotational frequencies, respectively, by numerical simulation.

  • The horizontal continuous casting process with the heating mold was adopted for fabricating defect-free 4043 Al alloy rods of 3.2m dia. with mirror surfaces. These rods were drawn into 2.4mm dia. rods for GTAW welding. The GTAW welding tests were carried out by use of these welding rods with 6061 Al alloy as a base metal. After welding, the X-ray tests, tensile strength tests, bending tests, and microstructural analysis of welded zone and HAZ were carried out. The results represented that the welding rods with good surfaces and welding properties could be made by the horizontal continuous casting, and followed by the drawing process.

  • In metalcraft, there are two kind of skills, one is forming and the other is decoration. And we could discern these skills as metal casting and metal hammering.. In metal casting, there are sand mould, cire perdus, stone mould and sealed monld; In metal hammering, metal forging, repousse technique and metal sheet making. After make form, craftman can use the decoration skills. There are chasing hammering, line carving, dotted line engraving, hair line engraving, kicking line engraving, ring punched ground, inlay, filigee and granulation skills. In korean traditional copper alloy, the craftman used forming and decoration skills. In Korea, tradionally the clatter use bronze for copper alloy; in case of Japan, they use violet coloring, and in case of Chinese, they like to use bronze used copper alloy. In case of Alloy, korean craftman used bronze traditionally, but recently the copper alloy skill is usually used; in case of Japan shibuichi and shakudo skills are used; and in Chinese copper, brass and cupronikel alloy are used.

  • The effects of alloying element and the condition of heat-treatment on the strength of squeeze-cast Al-3.0 wt%Si alloy were investigated. The strength of the alloy without grain refinement was increased with increase Cu content upto 3.0 wt% and rather decreased beyond that. The tensile strength of the alloy with grain refinement increased with Cu content upto 3.0 wt% and not changed beyond that. The strength of the alloy without grain refinement increased with the Mg content. The tensile strength with grain refinement increased with the Mg content upto 0.50 wt% and then decreased beyond that. The strength of the grain refined alloy increased by individual and simultaneous additions of Cu and Mg and the maximum strength was obtained with Al-3.0 wt%Si-4.5 wt%Cu-0.50 wt%Mg alloy. The optimum heat-treatment condition for this alloy was obtained.

  • The present paper investigates the effect of hot isostatic pressing (HIPing) on mechanical properties, e.g., tensile strength, ductility and impact absorption energy of sand and die casted aluminum alloys. After HIPing at various temperatures and pressure conditions, uniaxial tensile test and Izod impact test of the samples were carried out. The experimental results showed improvements in uniaxial tensile strength, elongation and Izod impact toughness of sand casted aluminum alloy, while deterioration of a tensile strength fur die casted aluminum alloy. The effect of HIPing for microstructure of the cast aluminum alloy was also investigated.

  • The typical microstructure of Al-5%Mg-2%Zn cast alloy mainly consists of an aluminum matrix with a small amount of AlMgZn 2nd phase. The secondary dendrite arm spacing and the grain size of the cast alloy tend to be inversely proportional to the section thickness of casting; however, the tensile properties cannot be said to be clearly related to the cast microstructure. After T6 heat treatment, the tensile strength of the alloy was enhanced significantly. TEM analysis results show that very fine AlMgZn precipitates were formed after the heat treatment. The corrosion resistance, measured according to the corrosion potential, was found to increase slightly after the conducting of heat treatment.
