Shock focusing is related with explosive release of shock wave energy on a narrow spot in a short duration of time triggering a spontaneous high pressure near the focal point. It is well known that reflection of planar incident shock wave from the metallic concave mirror such as ellipsoidal, paraboloidal or hemispherical cavities will focus on a focal point. We intend to improve the computational results using a wave propagation algorithm and to resolve the mushroom-like structure. For computation of the concave cavity flow, it is not easy to use a single-block mesh because of the many singular points in geometry and coordinates. We have employed a uniform Cartesian-grid method for the wave propagation algorithm.

Numerical implementation with a Cartesian cut-cell method is conducted in this study. A Cartesian cut-cell method is an easy and efficient mesh generation methodology for complex geometries. In this method, a background Cartesian grid is employed for most of computational domain and a cut-cell grid is applied for the peculiar grids where the flow characteristics are changed such as solid boundary to enhance the accuracy, applicability and efficiency. Accurate representation of complex geometries can be obtained by using the cut-cell method. The cut-cell grids are constructed with irregular meshes which have various shape and size. Therefore, the finite volume method is applied to numerical discretization on a irregular domain. The HLLC approximate Riemann solver, a Godunov-type finite volume method, is employed to discretize the advection terms in the governing equations. The weighted average flux method applied on the Cartesian cut cell grid for stabilization of the numerical results. To validate the numerical model using the Cartesian cut-cell grids, the model is applied to the rectangular tank problem of which the exact solutions exist. As a comparison of numerical results with the analytical solutions, the numerical scheme well represents flow characteristics such as free surface elevation and velocities in x-and y-directions in a rectangular tank with the Cartesian and cut-cell grids.
The use of metric trial functions to represent the real stress field in what is called the unsymmetric finite element formulation is an effective way to improve predictions from distorted finite elements. This approach works surprisingly well because the use of parametric functions for the test functions satisfies the continuity conditions while the use of metric (Cartesian) shape functions for the trial functions attempts to ensure that the stress representation during finite element computation can retrieve in a best-fit manner, the actual variation of stress in the metric space. However, the issue of how to handle situations where there is locking along with mesh distortion has never been addressed. In this paper, we show that the use of a consistent definition of the constrained strain field in the metric space can ensure a lock-free solution even when there is mesh distortion. The three-noded Timoshenko beam element is used to illustrate the principles. Some significant conclusions are drawn regarding the optimal strategy for finite element modelling where distortion effects and field-consistency requirements have to be reconciled simultaneously.
In the present study, viscous flow calculations of helicopter main rotor system in forward flight were made by using an unstructured hybrid mesh solver. Each rotating blade relative to the cartesian frame was simulated independently by adopting unstructured overset mesh technique. For the validation of the present method, calculations for the Caradonna-Tung non-lifting forward flight and the AH-1G main rotor system in forward flight were made. Additional computation was made for the UH-60A rotor in forward flight. Reasonable agreements were obtained between the present results and the experiment.
Due to its computational efficiency and geometrical flexibility, the Method of Characteristics (MOC) has been widely used for light water reactor lattice physics analysis. Usually acceleration methods are necessary for MOC to achieve acceptable convergence on practical reactor physics problems. Among them, Coarse Mesh Finite Difference (CMFD) is very popular and can drastically reduce the number of transport iterations. In OpenMOC, CMFD acceleration was implemented but had the limitation of supporting only a uniform CMFD mesh, which would often lead to splitting MOC source regions, thus creating an unnecessary increase in computation and memory use. In this study, CMFD acceleration with a non-uniform Cartesian mesh is implemented into OpenMOC. We also propose a quadratic fit based CMFD prolongation method in the axial direction to further improve the acceleration when multiple MOC source regions are contained in one CMFD coarse mesh. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the improvement of the CMFD acceleration capability in OpenMOC in terms of both efficiency and stability.
In general, castings often have complex shapes and significant variations in thickness within a single product, making grid generation for simulations challenging. Casting flows involve multiphase flows, requiring the tracking of the boundary between air and molten metal. Additionally, considerable time is spent calculating pressure fields due to density differences in a numerical analysis. For these reasons, the Cartesian grid system has traditionally been used in mold filling simulations. However, orthogonal grids fail to represent shapes accurately, leading to a momentum loss caused by the stair-like grid patterns on curved and sloped surfaces. This can alter the flow of molten metals and result in incorrect casting process designs. To address this issue, simulations in the Cartesian grid system involve creating a large number of grids to represent shapes more accurately. Alternatively, the Cut Cell method can be applied to address the problems arising from the Cartesian grid system. In this study, analysis results based on the number of grid in the Cartesian grid system for a casting flow analysis were compared with results obtained using the Cut Cell method. Casting flow simulations of actual products during various casting processes were also conducted, and these results were analyzed with and without applying the Cut Cell method.
There are many difficult problems in analyzing the flow characteristics in a high voltage circuit breaker such as shock wave and complex geometries, which may be either static or in relative motion. Although a variety of mesh generation techniques are now available, the generation of meshes around complicated, multicomponent geometries like a gas circuit breaker is still a tedious and difficult task for the computational fluid dynamics. This paper presents the computational method for analyzing the compressible flow fields in a high voltage gas circuit breaker using the Cartesian cut-cell method based on the CFD-CAD integration, which can achieve the accurate representation of the geometry designed by a CAD tools. The technique is frequently satisfied, and it will be almost universally so in the future, as the CFD-CAD traffic increases.
The 3-noded metric Timoshenko beam element with an offset of the internal node from the element centre is used here to demonstrate the best-fit paradigm using function space formulation under locking and mesh distortion. The best-fit paradigm follows from the projection theorem describing finite element analysis which shows that the stresses computed by the displacement finite element procedure are the best approximation of the true stresses at an element level as well as global level. In this paper, closed form best-fit solutions are arrived for the 3-noded Timoshenko beam element through function space formulation by combining field consistency requirements and distortion effects for the element modelled in metric Cartesian coordinates. It is demonstrated through projection theorems how lock-free best-fit solutions are arrived even under mesh distortion by using a consistent definition for the shear strain field. It is shown how the field consistency enforced finite element solution differ from the best-fit solution by an extraneous response resulting from an additional spurious force vector. However, it can be observed that when the extraneous forces vanish fortuitously, the field consistent solution coincides with the best-fit strain solution.

It is important to develop new effective technologies to increase the interruption capacity and to reduce the size of a UB(Gas Circuit Breakers). Major design parameters such as nozzle geometries and interrupting chamber dimensions affect the cooling of the arc and the breaking performance. But it is not easy to test real GCB model in practice as in theory. Therefore, a simulation tool based on a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) algorithm has been developed to facilitate an optimization of the interrupter. Special attention has been paid to the supersonic flow phenomena between contacts and the observation of hat-gas flow for estimating the breaking performance. However, there are many difficult problems in calculating the flow characteristics in a GCB such as shock wave and complex geometries, which may be either static or in relative motion. Although a number of mesh generation techniques are now available, the generation of meshes around complicated, multi-component geometries like a GCB is still a tedious and difficult task for the computational fluid dynamics. This paper presents the CFD program using CFB-CAD integration technique based on Cartesian cut-cell method, which could reduce researcher's efforts to generate the mesh and achieve the accurate representation of the geometry designed by a CAD tools.

For copyright protection of digital contents, we employ watermarking techniques to embed watermark signals into digital host data. In this paper we propose an adaptive watermarking algorithm for three-dimensional (3-D) mesh models. Watermark signals are inserted into vertex coordinates adaptively according to changes of their position values. While we embed strong watermarks in the areas of large variations, watermarks are weakly inserted in other areas. After we generate triangle strips by traversing the 3-D model and convert the Cartesian coordinates to the spherical coordinate system, we calculate variations of vertex positions along the traversed strips. Then, we insert watermark signals into the vertex coordinates adaptively according to the calculated variations. We demonstrate that imperceptibility of the inserted watermark is significantly improved and show the bit error rate (BER) for robustness.
