  • This paper presents the prediction of remaining service life of the concrete due to steel corrosion caused by the following three cases; carbonation, using sea sand and using deicing salts. The assessment of initiation period was generalized considering the existing perdiction models in the literature, corrosion experiment and field assessment. To evaluate the prediction equation of rust growth, the corrosion accelerating experiments was performed. The polarization resistance was measured by potentiostat and the conversion coefficient of polarzation resistance to corrosion rate was determined by the measurement of real mass loss. Chloride content, carbonation, cover depth, relative humidity, water-cement ratio(W/C), and the use of deicing salts were taken into account and the resulting prediction equation of rust growth was proposed on the basis of these properties. The proposed equation is to predict the rust growth during any specified period of time and be effective in particular for predicting service life of concrete in the case of using sea sand.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the fundamental data of durability which effects on the Carbonation of concrete by adding various admixture additives. Thus, We have experimented the accelerated test on the concrete blending which was admixed by blast furnace slag, fly-ash, silica fume , durability amelioration and it was cured 7weeks after twenty eight days water curing. The result of this experiment is that Carbonation speed increased extremely when water cement ratio went up, and by growing of replace cement ratio of admixture additives. The specimen which was added fly-ash, blast furnace slag, silica fume has the faster Carbonation speed than the specimen which was not added admixture additives. All of these specimen, fly-ash has the fastest progress speed.

  • In this study, in CO2 sequestration was carried out through pressure carbonation for concrete slurry water to realize carbon neutrality in the cement industry. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that as the pressure of CO2 increased, the pH decreased and the amount of CaCO3 produced increased. However, despite the CO2 pressure of 5 bars, the carbonation reaction for 10 minutes alone did not proceed completely.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the carbon capture capacity of various inorganic materials. For this purpose, the change in property of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), blast furnace slag fine powder (GGBS), and circulating fluidized bed boiler ash (CFBC) due to carbonation were analyzed. Carbonation curing was performed on all specimens through the accelerated carbonation experiment, and the amount of carbon capture was quantitatively analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis according to the age of carbonation. From the results, it is confirmed that the carbon capture capacity was shown in all specimens. The carbon capture amount was shown in the order of CFBC, OPC, and GGBS. The 28-day carbon capture of CFBC, OPC, and GGBS was 3.9%, 1.3%, and 9.4%, respectively. Carbon capture reaction occurred rapidly at the beginning of carbonation, and occurred slowly with increasing age. SEM image analysis revealed that an additional product generated by carbonation curing in all specimens was calcium carbonate.

  • Carbonation and drying shrinkage are very important properties of concrete, that can cause concrete to lower its capacity and spall. But the research on them in high strength concrete is very poor. In this study, to estimate influences of W/B, the kind of admixture, the replacement ratio of admixture, fineness of blast furnace and etc. on drying shrinkage and carbonation, we make experiment with 3 levels(28, 35, 55%) of W/B, 3 kinds(blast-furnace slag, fly-ash, silica-fume) of admixture, 3 levels of the replacement ratio, 3 levels(4000, 6000, 8000cm2/g) of fineness of blast-furnace slag and 2 kinds of curing condition. As the results, compressive strength of concrete was decreased, as W/C was increased and the replacement ratio of admixture was increased. Drying shrinkage was increased, as W/B was higher, the replacement ratio of admixture was increased and fineness of blast-furnace slag was decreased. And carbonation was increased, as W/B ratio was higher, the replacement ratio of admixture was increased.

  • In this research, the influence of painting materials and applying timing on carbonation and chloride resistances of high volume SCMs concrete was evaluated. As a durability improving method, comparative tests were conducted with painting materials of ERCO (emulsified refined cooking oil), RCO (refined cooking oil), WR (water repellent agent), and ERCO + WR and with painting timings of right after demolding, and 28 days after the wet curing. From the experiment results, in the case of carbonation and chloride resistance, the carbonation depth and chloride penetration depth were decreased when the painting materials were applied in 28 days of wet curing. Additionally, for painting materials, with the order of ERCO, RCO, ERCO+WR, and WR, the carbonation and chloride penentration was delayed. Hence it is considered that ERCO shows the most favorable performance of resistance against carbonation and chloride penetration.

  • A concrete carbonation model has been constructed that takes account of the diffusion of carbon dioxide through a coating and reaction with calcium hydroxide, and this model has been validated by an accelerated carbonation experiment. (1) By using values for the coatings calculated on the basis of a diffusion.permeation theory as input data for the analysis of diffusion.reaction carbonation in an unsteady state, the effect of the coatings in reducing carbonation can be represented with high accuracy. (2) Through a sensitivity analysis of the diffusion.reaction carbonation model and the experimental results, we found that the diffusion coefficient of calcium hydroxide shows a high interrelationship at 1e-12($m^2/s$). The reaction rate constant for carbonation shows a high interrelationship at 5e-5($m^3/mol/s$).

  • Chloride diffusion effect of cement paste, freezing and thawing test, carbonation of concrete specimen were carried out using inorganic coating material. According to the chloride ions diffusion test, it is elucidated that permeability and diffusion coefficient of Cl ̄ ions and apparent coefficient of coated cement paste is smaller than plain cement paste. A durability of coated concrete specimen was enhanced by the experiment result of concrete carbonation and freezing thawing test.

  • This study undertook initial investigations into the carbonation of chlorine bypass dust, aiming to apply it as a raw material for cement and as an admixture for concrete. Various experimental methods, including XRD(X-ray diffraction), XRF(X-ray fluorescence), and particle size distribution analyses, were employed to verify the physical and chemical properties of chlorine bypass dust, with and without water washing. The mineral carbonation extent of chlorine bypass dust was examined by considering the dust type, stirring temperature, and experiment duration. Notably, a higher degree of mineral carbonation was observed in water-washed bypass dust than its non-water-washed counterpart, indicating an elevated calcium content in the former. Furthermore, an augmented stirring temperature positively impacted the initial stages of mineral carbonation. However, divergent outcomes were observed over time, contingent upon the specific characteristics of dust types under consideration.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine a possibility that fly ash could be used as raw material for carbonation by conducting the experiment on magnetic separation and hydration of fly ash that contained a large amount of CaO composite. Wet magnetic separation experiment was performed to remove the component of magnetic substance that contained fly ash, which aimed at increasing the content of CaO in the non-magnetic domain. The selected fly ash was used for hydration experiment before the TG-DTA, XRF and XRD analyses were made to confirm the Ca component that could be carbonated. Then, the fly ash was turned to a hydrate that was favorable to dissociation of $Ca^{2+}$ ion. As a result, the magnetic separation enabled detecting the content of CaO component by up to 61 wt% in the non-magnetic domain. Since the hydrate was confirmed, it is believed that the fly ash can be used as raw material for carbonation.
