Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes on nickel coated glass substrates were obtained at low temperatures below 600$\^{C}$ by plasma enhanced hot filament chemical vapor deposition where acetylene gas was used as the carbon source and ammonia gas was used as the dilution gas and catalyst. The diameters of the nanotubes decreased from 96 m to 41 m as NH$_3$/C$_2$H$_2$ ratio increased from 2:1 to 5:1. Total flow rate of input gases with constant NH$_3$/C$_2$H$_2$ ratio did not change the diameter of carbon nanotubes. No growth of the carbon nanotubes was observed with only C$_2$H$_2$ nor N$_2$ instead of NH$_2$. G line and D line in Raman spectra were observed, which implies that there were many structural defects in carbon nanotubes.
Hydrogen gas and carbon nanotubes along with nanocarbon were produced from commercial natural gas using fixed bed catalyst reactor system. The maximum amount of carbon (491 g/g of catalyst) formation was achieved on 25% Ni, 3% Cu supported catalyst without formation of CO/CO2. Pure carbon nanotubes with length of 308 nm having balloon and horn type shapes were also formed at 673 K. Three sets of catalysts were prepared by varying the concentration of Ni in the first set, Cu concentration in the second set and doping with K in the third set to investigate the effect on stabilization of the catalyst and production of carbon nanotubes and hydrogen by copper and potassium doping. Particle size analysis revealed that most of the catalyst particles are in the range of 20-35 nm. All the catalysts were characterized using powder XRD, SEM/EDX, TPR, CHN, BET and CO-chemisorption. These studies indicate that surface geometry is modified electronically with the formation of different Ni, Cu and K phases, consequently, increasing the surface reactivity of the catalyst and in turn the Carbon nanotubes/H2 production. The addition of Cu and K enhances the catalyst dispersion with the increase in Ni loadings and maximum dispersion is achieved on 25% Ni: 3% Cu/Al catalyst. Clearly, the effect of particle size coupled with specific surface geometry on the production of hydrogen gas and carbon nanotubes prevails. Addition of K increases the catalyst stability with decrease in carbon formation, due to its interaction with Cu and Ni, masking Ni and Ni:Cu active sites.
In the present work, we apply a technique that has been used for the expansion of graphite to multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). The nanotubes are rapidly heated for a short duration, followed by immersion in acid solution, so that they undergo expansion. The diameter of the expanded CNTs is 5-10 times larger than that of the as-received nanotubes. This results in considerable swelling of the CNTs and opening of the tube tips, which may facilitate the accessibility of lithium ions into the inner holes and the interstices between the nanotube walls. The Li-ion storage capacity of the expanded nanotubes is measured by using the material as an anode in Li-ion cells. The result show that the discharge capacity of the expanded nanotubes in the first cycle is as high as 2,160 mAh/g, which is about 28% higher than that of the un-treated MWCNT anode. However, the charge/discharge capacity quickly drops in subsequent cycles and finally reaches equilibrium values of ~370 mAh/g. This is possibly due to the destruction of the lattice structures by repeated intercalation of Li ions.
We investigated a nanoscale inertia sensor based on telescoping carbon nanotubes, using classical molecular dynamics simulations. The position of the telescoping nanotubes is controlled by the centrifugal force exerted by the rotation platform, thus, position shifts are determined by the capacitance between carbon nanotubes and the electrode, and the operating frequency of the carbon nanotube oscillator. This measurement system, tracking oscillations of the carbon nanotube oscillator, can be used as the sensor for numerous types of devices, such as motion detectors, accelerometers and acoustic sensors.
The tribological performance of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) in mineral oils is investigated at ambient temperature. The frictional forces, wear amounts and cycles to scuffing of the oils with nanotubes and without those were measured using the ball-on-disk tester. It was found that there were little differences in the frictional forces and wear amounts of two oils. However, the scuffing times of oils with nanotubes were much longer than those of oils without nanotubes in sliding tests. The nanotubes were very effective on maintaining the oil gap and protecting the surfaces in boundary lubricated sliding.

Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been produced using various type of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). Catalysts such as Ni, Co, and Fe are used for growth of CNTs. To explain the effect of catalysts on the growth characteristics of CNTs, carbon species of $C_2H_2$ was observed in different catalysts using optical emission spectroscopy (OES) with theoretical calculation on the surface reaction in different catalysts.

The improvement in the field emission parameters, luminescent uniformity, degradation rate and half life has been observed for the thin-multi wall carbon nanotube (t-MWCNT) composite, after incorporating the Zn nanoparticles. The Zn nanoparticles $(diameter\;{\sim}\;100\;{\pm}15\;nm)$ has been incorporated to synthesize the Zn-t-MWCNT composite.
Carbon nanotubes(CNTs), since their first discovery, have been considered as new promising materials in various fields of applications including field emission displays, memory devices, electrodes, NEMS constituents, hydrogen storages and reinforcements in composites due to their extra-ordinary properties. The carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposites have attracted attention owing to their outstanding mechanical and electrical properties and are expected to overcome the limit of conventional materials. Various application areas are possible for carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposites through the functionalization of carbon nanotubes. Carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites have been fabricated by liquid phase process including surface functionalization and dispersion of CNTs within organic solvent. In case of carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites, the mechanical strength and electrical conducting can be improved by more than an order of magnitude. The carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites can be applied to high strength polymers, conductive polymers, optical limiters and EMI materials. In spite of successful development of carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites, the researches on carbon nanotube reinforced inorganic matrix nanocomposites show limitations due to a difficulty in homogeneous distribution of carbon nanotubes within inorganic matrix. Therefore, the enhancement of carbon nanotube reinforced inorganic nanocomposites is under investigation to maximize the excellent properties of carbon nanotubes. To overcome the current limitations, novel processes, including intensive milling process, sol-gel process, in-situ process and spark plasma sintering of nanocomposite powders are being investigated. In this presentation, current research status on carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposites with various matrices are reviewed.
