  • PCM (Prepreg Compression Molding) process is a high-speed molding technology that can manufacture high-quality CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) parts. Compared to the autoclave process, it generates less waste and can significantly reduce cycle time, so various studies are being conducted in the aerospace and automobile industries. In this study, in order to improve the quality of the PCM process, a molding method was developed to increase the compression pressure of the press step by step according to the curing behavior of the prepreg. It was confirmed that this multi-stage compression molding technology is a good means to produce high-quality CFRP products and shorten cycle times. And, the laminated prepreg at room temperature was immediately put into the mold and preheated and molded at the same time, so that it could be molded without a separate preheating process. In addition, as a result of applying the same process conditions optimized for flat plate molding to three-dimensional shapes, a product similar to a flat plate in appearance could be made without the process of establishing process conditions.

  • This paper presents the results of axial compression testing and numerical modeling on reinforced concrete columns (RCC) with normal concrete (NC) and high-strength concrete (HSC), RCC confined by glass-fiber reinforced plastic pipes (GRP) casing as well as carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), The major parameters evaluated in the experiments were the effects of concrete type, GRP casing and CFRP wrapping, as well as the number of CFRP layers. 12 cylindrical RCC ($150{\times}600mm$) were prepared and divided into two groups, NC and HSC. Each group was divided into two parts; with and without GRP casing. In each part, one column was without CFRP strengthening layer, a column was wrapped with one CFRP layer and another column with two CFRP layers. All columns were tested under concentrated compression load. Numerical modeling was performed using ABAQUS software and the results of which were compared with experimental findings. A good agreement was found between the results. Results indicated that the utilization of CFRP wrapping and GRP casing improved compression capacity and ductility of RCC. The addition of one and two layer-FRP wrapping increased capacity in the NC group to an average of 18.5% and 26.5% and in the HSC group to an average of 10.2% and 24.8%. Meanwhile, the utilization of GRP casing increased the capacity of the columns by 3 times in the NC group and 2.38 times in the HSC group. The results indicated that although both CFRP wrapping and GRP casing increased confinement, the GRP casing gave more increase capacity and ductility of the RCC due to higher confinement. Furthermore, the confinement effect was higher on NC group.

  • Blades of horizontal axis are nowadays made of composite materials. Generally, composite materials satisfy design provides lower weight and good stiffness, while laminate composites have often damages as like the delamination and cracks at the interface of laminates. The box spar and tail parts of a blade are composed of the CFRP/GFRP hybrid laminate composites. However, delamination and the interfacial crack often occur in the interface of CFRP/GFRP hybrid laminate composites under the mixed mode fracture condition, especially mode I and mode II. Therefore, there is a need for the evaluation of the mixed mode fracture behavior during the delamination of CFRP/GFRP hybrid laminates. This study shows the experimental results for the delamination fracture toughness in CFRP/GFRP hybrid laminate composites. Fracture toughness experiments and estimation are performed by using DMMB(Dissimilar mixed mode bending) specimen. The materials used in the test are a commercial woven type CFRP(Carbon fiber reinforced plastic) prepreg(CF3327) and UD type GFRP(Glass fiber reinforced plastic) prepreg(HD224A). A CFRP/GFRP hybrid laminate composite is composed by the 10 plies CFRP and GFRP prepreg for DMMB. A thickness of CFRP and GFRP layer is 2.5mm and 3.0mm, respectively. Also the fulcrum location which is a loading parameter is changed from 80 to 100mm on the specimen of length 120mm because it defines the ratio of mode I to mode II. In this study, the effects of the fulcrum location are evaluated in the viewpoint of energy release rate in mode I and mode II contribution. The results show that the delamination crack initiates at higher displacement and lower load according to the increase of the fulcrum location ratio. And the variation of the energy release rate for mode I and II contributions for the mode mixity are shown.

  • A CFRP (Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Plastic) strengthening method being widely used to increase the load-carrying capacity of structures is very suitable for existing bridge structures. However, not only flexure and shear failures but also debonding failure might be additionally occured in reinforced concrete(RC) beams strengthened with the CFRP plates. The CFRP debonding failure would cause a brittle fracture of the beam. Therefore, health monitoring for the CFRP bonding condition is strongly required. In this study, a feasibility of the impedance-based damage detection method using PZT sensors was investigated through a series of experimental studies for realtime structural health monitoring(SHM) for the CFRP laminated concrete structures.

  • Aluminum and CFRP tube is light-weight material representatively but collapse mechanism is different under axial loading. Aluminum tube absorbs energy by stable plastic deformation under axialloading. While CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics)tube absorb synergy by unstable brittle failure but its specific strength and stiffness is higher than that of aluminum tube. In this study, for complement of detect and synergy effect by combination with the advantages of each member, the axialcollapsetests were performed for combined aluminum CFRP tubes which are composed of aluminum tubes wrapped with CFRP out side aluminum square tubes. Collapsecharacteristics were analyzed for combined square tubes which have different CFRP orientation angle and thickness. Test results were compared with that of aluminum tubes and CFRP tubes.

  • CFRP is the composite material manufactured by the hybrid resin on the basis of carbon fiber. As this material has the high specific strength and the light weight, it has been widely used at various fields. Particularly, the unidirectional carbon fiber can be applied with the layer angle. CFRP made with layer angle has the strength higher than with no layer angle. In this paper, the property of crack growth due to each layer angle was investigated on the crack propagation and fracture behavior of the CFRP compact tension specimen due to the change of layer angle. The value of maximum stress is shown to be decreased and the crack propagation is slowed down as the layer angle is increased. But the limit according to the layer angle is shown as the stress is increased again from the base point of the layer angle of $60^{\circ}$. This study result is thought to be utilized with the data which verify the probability of fatigue fracture when the defect inside the structure at using CFRP of mechanical structure happens.

  • This paper presents the finite element method results for HSS(Hollow Square Section) steel columns strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Plastic(CFRP) sheets. 6 specimens were fabricated and the specimen groups were non-compact short columns, slender short columns, and non-compact long columns. Test parameter was the number of CFRP ply. The finite element analysis was performed by using ANSYS Workbench V.14.0 and the results of FEM were compared with those of Test for failure mode, load-displacement curve, maximum load, and initial stiffness. The comparisons between experimental observations and computed results show that the analyses provided good correlation to actual behavior. Finally, the buckling stress were calculated according to the AISC cold-formed structure provision and the retrofitting effect were verified for each section type.

  • This paper aims at estimating the fracture behavior at the bonded part of composite material. CFRP is manufactured as the type of TDCB. The static analysis of Mode 1 due to the configuartion factor of m is carried out. Four kinds of specimens have the configuartion factor(m) of 2, 2.5, 3 and 3.5. As the study result, the displacements at specimens are shown to be similar each other in these four cases. At m of 3.5, the reaction force becomes highest as 412 N and is shown to be improved as much as 14% by comparing m of 2. The data on defection of the bonded interface and reaction force are thought to be contributed to the structural design of CFRP and the safe design.
