The corrosion resistance of epoxy-coated carbon steel was evaluated. The carbon steel surface was subjected to different treatment methods such as steel grit blasting with different size, steel shot ball blasting and power tool treatment. To study the effect of the treatments, the topology of the treated surface was observed by optical 3D microscopy and a pull-off adhesion test was conducted. The corrosion resistance of the epoxy-coated carbon steel was further examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) combined with hygrothermal cyclic testing. The results of EIS indicated that the epoxy-coated carbon steel treated with steel grit blasting showed an improved corrosion resistance compared to untreated epoxy-coated surfaces or surfaces subjected to shot ball blasting and power tool treatments.
Food waste can be a valuable carbon source in biological nutrient removal (BNR) systems because of high C/N and C/P ratios. However, food waste should be pretreated to promote its hydrolysis rate because hydrolysis reaction would be a rate-limiting step. This study investigates the influence of the enzymatic pretreatment on acid fermentation of food waste. Solubilization of particulate matter in food waste by using commercial enzymes was examined. The acidification efficiency and the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production potential of enzymatically pretreated food waste were also examined. The highest volatile suspended solids (VSS) reduction was obtained with an enzyme mixture ratio of 1:2:1 of carbohydrase:protease:lipase. An optimum enzyme dosage for solubilization of food waste was $0.1\%$(V/V) with the enzyme mixture ratio of 1:2:1. In the acid fermentation of enzymatically pretreated food waste, $0.1\%$(V/V) enzyme mixture dosage for pretreatment result in the maximum VFAs production and the best VFAs fraction in soluble COD(SCOD). The VFAs production at this addition level was 3.3 times higher than that of no-enzyme added fermenter. The dominant VFAs present was n-butyrate followed by acetate.
In order to treat leachate from aged landfill site effectively, removal of biologically recalcitrant organic matter and denitrification efficiency were evaluated through the combination of $H_2O_2/O_3$ AOP pretreatment process and UASB process. The results can be summarized as follows. In case of leachate having low COD/N ratio from aged landfill site, it is possible to increase available COD for denitrification in nitrate utilizing denitrification and nitrite utilizing denitrification both by enhancing biodegradability of recalcitrant organic matter as applying $H_2O_2/O_3$ AOP to pretreatment process. In this experiment, it is found that available COD for denitrification can be increased to 1.0 and 0.4 g/day, respectively. Comparison has been made between requiring COD and available COD for denitrification in each experimental stages. It is expected that high rate of denitrification can be achieved with leachate from young landfill site because higher amount of available COD for denotrification is present in the leachate than the amount of requiring COD for denitrification. Especially, In leachate from aged landfill site with low COD/N ratio, it can be concluded that denitrification using nitrite nitrogen can enhance overall denitrification performance efficiently because denitrification using nitrite nitrogen requires less amount of carbon source than denitrification using nitrate nitrogen. Comparing the biogas production rate and nitrogen content of biogas under the condition of same amount of nitrate and nitrite addition, biogas production and nitrogen content of biogas are increased during denitrification after $H_2O_2/O_3$ AOP pretreatment process. Therefore, it can be confirmed that COD/N ratio in the leachate is increased. Applying $H_2O_2/O_3$ AOP as pretreatment system of landfill leachate seems to have little economic benefit because it requires additional carbon source to denitrify ammonia nitrogen in leachate coming from aged landfill site. However, it is possible to apply this pretreatment process to leachate from old landfill site in view of AOP process can achieve removal of biologically recalcitrant organic matter and increase of available COD for denitrification simultaneously.

Carbon coils could be synthesized using $C_2H_2/H_2$ as source gases and $SF_6$ as an incorporated additive gas under the thermal chemical vapor deposition system. A 304-type stainless steel was used as a substrate with nickel powders as the catalyst. The surface of the substrate was pretreated using a sand paper or a mechanical drill to enhance the production yield of the carbon coils. The characteristics of the deposited carbon nanomaterials on the substrates were investigated according to the surface state on the stainless steel substrate. The protrusion induced by the grooves on the substrate surface could enhance the formation of the carbon nanomaterials having the coils geometries. The cause for the enhancement of the carbon coils formation by the grooves was suggested and discussed with the surface energies for the interaction between as-growing carbon elements. Finally, we could obtain the massive production yield of the carbon coils by the surface pretreatment using SiC sand papers on the several tens grooved stainless steel substrate.
Carbon nanotubes were synthesized at various conditions using Ni-catalytic thermal chemical vapor deposition method and their characteristic properties were investigated by SEM, TEM and Raman spectroscopy. Carbon nanotubes were formed on very fine Ni-catalytic particles. The carbon nanotubes synthesized by thermal decomposition of acetylene at $700^{\circ}C$ had a coiled shape, while those synthesized at $850^{\circ}C$ showed a curved and Y-shape having a bamboo-like morphology. It was found that the carbon nanotube was also made on the fine Ni-catalytic particles formed on the surface of 100~400nm sized large ones after pretreatment with $NH_3$.ber composites show the high dielectric constant and large conduction loss which is increased with anisotropy of fiber arrangement. It is, therefore, proposed that the glass and carbon fiber composites can be used as the impedance transformer (surface layer) and microwave reflector, respectively. By inserting the foam core or honeycomb core (which can be treated as an air layer) between glass and carbon fiber composites, microwave absorption above 10 dB (90% absorbance) in 4-12 GHz can be obtained. The proposed fiber composites laminates with sandwitch structure have high potential as lightweight and high strength microwave absorbers.

We have grown vertically aligned carbon nanotubes in a large area of Co-Ni codeposited Si substrates by the thermal CVD usign $C_2H_2$ gas. Since the discovery of carbon nanotubes, growth of carbon nanotubes has been achieved by several methods such as laser vaporization, arc discharge, and pyrolysis. In particular, growth of vertically aligned nanotubes is important to flat panel display applications. Recently, vertically aligned carbon nanotubes have been grown on glass by PECVD. Aligned carbon nanotubes can be also grown on mesoporous silica and Fe patterned porous silicon using CVD. In this paper, we demonstrate that carbon nanotubes can be vertically aligned on catalyzed Si substrate when the domain density of catalytic particles reaches a certain value. We suggest that steric hindrance between nanotubes at an initial stage of the growth forces nanotubes to align vertically and each nonotubes are grown in bundle.
This experiment was carried out with the purpose of testing nickel and copper adsorption abilities of multi wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and activated carbon. In the acidic condition, only MWCNT was effective for removing nickel and copper ion in the aqueous phase while activated carbon rarely remove them. The MWCNT and heavy metals adsorption reaction followed pseudo-first order kinetic. When the initial pH value was neutral (pH=7), nickel was rapidly removed by MWCNT and activated carbon in 4 hr (99.02 %, 80.30 %). Also, copper ion was rapidly removed by both adsorbents in 4 hr when the initial pH was 7 (100 %, 99.73 %). Increasing of adsorbent dosages affect the pH evolution and heavy metal ions removal (0 ~ 99%). Also, oxidation pretreatment enhanced the adsorption efficiency of MWCNT.

We have grown carbon nanotubes by thermal chemical vapor deposition of $C_{2}H_{2}$ on catalytic metal deposited on silicon oxide substrates. Highly purified carbon nanotubes are uniformly grown on a large area of the silicon oxide substrates. It is observed that surface modification of catalytic metals deposited on substrates by either etching with dipping in a HF solution and/or $NH_{3}$ pretreatment is a crucial step for the nanotube growth prior to the reaction of $C_{2}H_{2}$ gas. The diameters of carbon naotubes could be controlled by applying the different catalytic metals.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes were massively produced by the catalytic reaction of C$_2$H$_2$ - Fe(CO)$\sub$5/ mixture at 750 - 950$^{\circ}C$ in a quartz tube reactor and over quartz substrates. Well-aligned MWNT array grows perpendicular to the quartz tube reactor and the quartz substrates at an average of 60 nm in diameter and up to several thousands of micrometers in length. This method does not require any pretreatment of substrates and CNTs are grown at atmospheric pressure. It could be suitable for mass production of multiwalled nanotubes. Scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope images of the nanotubes deposited on the substrates allowed us to monitor the quality of MWNTs grown under different operating conditions.
