  • Most of previous methods for the dispersions of carbon nanotube were achieved by various chemical functionalizations. In this study, however, we generated highly water dispersed carbon nanofibers by altering intrinsic materials property only, such as crystallinity of outer layers of carbons, without chemical treatment. Although most of chemical functionalization requires acidic treatment and may degrade their chemical functions by interacting with other molecules, suggested strategy demonstrated a simple but chemically non-degradable carbon nanotube for the application of various medical applications, such as drug delivery system and implant coatings.Furthermore, protein adsorption was increased by the reducing surface crystalinity since outer activated surface induced more adsorption of oxygen and eventually greater protein adsorption than pristine carbon nanofibers.

  • Possessing of carbon nanotubes in biopolymer intrigued much interest due to their mechanical and unique nanoscale surface properties. Surface stiffness can be controlled by the amount of carbon nanotubes in polymer and surface wettability can be altered by the order of nanoscale surface roughness. Protein adsorption mechanism on nanostructured carbon nanotube/polymer thin film will be discussed in this study. In addition, we identified that mechanical stimuli also contribute the messenchymal stem cell and bone cell interactions. Importantly, live cell analysis system also showed altered morphology and cellular functions. Thus, embedding of carbon nanostructures simultaneously contribute to protein adsorption and cellular interactions. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the evidence that nanoscale surface features determine the subsequent biological interactions, such as protein adsorption and cellular interactions.

  • A carbon-based hybrid resistor was fabricated using carbon nanotube (CNT) paste as an adhesive layer to establish electrically continuous ohmic contacts between CNT sheets and different CNT sheet or copper based metal alloy plates, and its electrical properties were evaluated. CNT sheets were fabricated using vacuum filtration with a CNT solution dispersed in isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solvent. The electrical characteristics of these carbon-based hybrid resistors were investigated. The CNT paste fulfilled the requirements for forming ohmic contacts between CNT sheets and metal alloy plates, which was attributed to the lowest work function difference and excellent wettability at the interface.

  • Carbon nanotubes exhibit strong fluorescence emissions in the region of near infrared regions where most biomolecules are transparent. Such signals are highly sensitive to environment variations as well as adsorption of specific biomolecules. In this research, single walled carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) are assembled with different types of DNAs and used to target specific types of DNAs. Dot blot investigations and corresponding raman spectroscopy observations demonstrated excellent selectivity of carbon nanotube-DNA bioconjugates. The results show possibility of using SWNT as generic nano-bio markers for precise detection of different kinds of genes.

  • We report a method for making a device on which semi-conducting single-walled carbon nanotubes are attached selectively between two metal electrodes. This method is divided two processes. First we can connect a rope of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) between two electrodes using the electric field. But a SWNTs' rope obtained by the first process was composed of a few of metallic and semi-conducting SWNTs together. The second process is to burn the metallic and semi-conducting nanotubes through applying a voltage. As a result, we can obtain a semi-conducting SWNT device. To make the patterned electrodes, we deposited $SiO_2$(150nm) on a wafer. After then, we made a patterned samples with Ti(200 $\AA$)/Au(300$\AA$). We empirically obtained a electric condition 0.66 $V_{pp}$ /${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$@5MHz. From this result, we verified that most of current go through the metallic nanotubes in this device. When we apply DC voltage between two electrodes, the metallic carbon nanotubes are burnt. Finally, we can obtain a semi-conducting nanotube device which we desire to make. We got the I-V characteristic graph which has shown the semi-conducting property. We hope to apply to the various applications using this selective semi-conducting carbon nanotube deposition method.ethod.

  • Photoelectrocatalytic decolorization of methlene blue (MB) in the presence of two types of carbon nanotube/titania and yttrium-treated carbon nanotube/titania electrodes in aqueous solutions were studied under visible light. The prepared composite electrodes were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, and photoelectrocatalytic activity. The photoelectrocatalytic performances of the supported catalysts were evaluated for the decolorization of MB solution under visible light irradiation. The results showed that yttrium incorporation enhanced the decolorization rate of MB. It was found that the photoelectrocatalytic degradation of a MB solution could be attributed to the combined effects caused by the photo-degradation of titania, the electron assistance of carbon nanotube network, the enhancement of yttrium and a function of the applied potential. The repeatability of photocatalytic activity was also tested. The presence of yttrium enhanced the hydrophillicity of yttrium-carbon nanotubes/titania electrode because more OH groups can be adsorbed on the surface.

  • The thermoelectric Seebeck and Peltier effects of a single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) quantum dot nanodevice are investigated, taking into consideration a certain value of applied tensile strain and induced ac-field with frequency in the terahertz (THz) range. This device is modeled as a SWCNT quantum dot connected to metallic leads. These two metallic leads operate as a source and a drain. In this three-terminal device, the conducting substance is the gate electrode. Another metallic gate is used to govern the electrostatics and the switching of the carbon nanotube channel. The substances at the carbon nanotube quantum dot/metal contact are controlled by the back gate. Results show that both the Seebeck and Peltier coefficients have random oscillation as a function of gate voltage in the Coulomb blockade regime for all types of SWCNT quantum dots. Also, the values of both the Seebeck and Peltier coefficients are enhanced, mainly due to the induced tensile strain. Results show that the three types of SWCNT quantum dot are good thermoelectric nanodevices for energy harvesting (Seebeck effect) and good coolers for nanoelectronic devices (Peltier effect).

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of the morphology of CNT (Carbon Nanotube) on the thermal conductivity of suspensions. The effective thermal conductivities of the samples were measured using a steady-state cut bar apparatus method. Enhancements based on the thermal conductivity of the base fluid are presented as functions of both the volume fraction and the temperature. Although functionalized SWNT (Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube) produced more stable and homogeneous suspensions, the addition of small amounts of surfactant to suspensions of 'as produced' SWNT demonstrated a greater increase in effective thermal conductivity than functionalized SWNT alone. The effective thermal conductivity enhancement corresponding to 1.0% by volume approached 10%, which was observed to be lower than expected, but more than twice the values, 3.5%, obtained for similar tests conducted using aluminum oxide suspensions. However, for suspensions of MWNT (Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube), the degree of enhancement was measured to be approximately 37%. It was postulated that the effect of clustering, resulting from the multiple heat-flow passages constituted by interconnecting neighboring CNT clusters, played an important role in significant enhancement of effective thermal conductivity.
