  • Polypropylene(PP)/multiwalled carbon nanotubes(MWCNT) nanocomposites films and PP/poly(vinyl alcohol)/CNT nanocomposites films were prepared through melt mixing method by the extruder. The PP/CNT nanocomposites films, which contain CNT of a variable content, were prepared for the first time and research on a appropriate content of the CNT on the PP/CNT nanocomposites films was conducted. The effects of take-up speed of the extruder on the mechanical and chemical properties of the PP/CNT and PP/PVA/CNT nanocomposites film were studied. Field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM) was used to examine the surface morphology and the DSC measurement and tensile test were conducted. It was found that the properties decreased when take-up speed was increased.

  • $TiO_2$ thin films were synthesized on carbon fibers using chemical vapor deposition. We show that these films can exhibit extraordinarily high absorption capacities of toluene vapor. Such an absorption phenomenon of toluene at room temperature was not found for other $TiO_2$ samples. Upon toluene absorption change in the color (darkening) of the film was found, indicating that these films can be used as an indicator of the existence of volatile organic compounds in the indoor environments. By X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), a high concentration of OH species and a unique layered structure were found for the $TiO_2$ films and these could be related to their high absorption capacity of toluene.

  • Amorphous carbon (a-C) films have been deposited on Si(100) substrate using RF magnetron system in order to investigate the electron field emission properties. The a-C films were treated by $N_2$ gas plasma at room temperature. Surface morphologices and structural properties of the a-C films before and after $N_2$ plasma treatment were observed by scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscope, respectively. Structural properties and surface morphology of the a-C films were changed by $N_2$ plasma treatment. The emission properties can be improved by the plasma treatment according to the contents of nitrogen on the a-C films which is varied by plasma treatment time. Before the plasma treatment, the a-C films are found to have a threshold field of 14 V/$\mu$m, but the a-C film treated by $N_2$ plasma for 30 min exhibit threshold field as low as 6.5 V/$\mu$m.

  • Effects of thermal treatment on the structural properties of diamond-like carbon (DU) films were examined. The DLC films were deposited by using a modified filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) deposition system and by varying the negative substrate bias voltage, deposition time, and nitrogen flow rate. Thermal treatment on DLC films was performed using a rapid thermal annealing (RTA) process at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2min. Raman spectroscopy, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscope (AFM), and surface profiler were used to characterize the I$_{D}$I$_{G}$ intensity ratio, sp$^3$ hybrid carbon fraction, internal stress, and surface roughness. It was found for all the deposited DLC films that the RTA-treatment results in the release of internal compressive stress, while at the same time it leds to the decrease of sp$^3$ fraction and the increase of I$_{D}$I$_{G}$ intensity ratio. It was also suggested that the thermal treatment effect on the structural property of DLC films strongly depends on the diamond-like nature (i.e., sp$^3$ fraction) of as-deposited film.ed film.

  • We developed a one-step method for fabrication of addressable suspended SWNT films and demonstrate excellent detection performance of paraoxon based on OPH-immobilized SWNT films for environmental monitoring. For dispersed SWNT suspension, COOH-SWNT was prepared by the oxidation of carbon nanotubes using acid treatment and sonication. Suspended SWNT-film was fabricated between cantilever electrodes by dielectrophoretic force and surface tension of the water meniscus. After that, OPH were immobilized on suspended SWNT-films by nonspecific binding for enzymatic hydrolysis of paraoxon. The electrical properties of the SWNT films were measured in real time at room temperature. Structurally suspended SWNT films from substrate surface made possible rapid and highly sensitive detection of target molecules with increased convectional and diffusional fluxes of the molecules and with a large binding surface area. SWNT film FET resulted in a real-time, label-free, and electrical detection of paraoxon to the concentration of ca. $10{\mu}m$ with a step-wise rapid response time of several seconds.

  • The plasma properties in the facing target sputtering system during carbon nitride film deposition have been investigated. The ionized nitrogen species of the deposited films increased with increasing discharge current and were independent of the nitrogen pressure. The nitrogen content in the films did not vary significantly with the variation of nitrogen gas. The electron temperature was high close to that in the inter-cathode region, reduced as the electrons moved away from the most intense region of magnetic confinement and increased again outside this region. Calculations based on the film composition showed that the ion to carbon atom ratio at the substrate was about 50 and that the ratio between the ionized and neutral nitrogen molecules was about 0.25.

  • Titanium oxide films and powders are attached onto carbon cloths via RF reactive sputtering and an epoxy resin mixture, respectively. $TiO_2$/carbon composite materials were used to investigate the photoelectrochemical degradation of perchlorate ions in water. The energy band gaps of the RF-sputtered $TiO_2$ thin films ranged from 3.35-3.44 eV. A photocurrent of the powdered $TiO_2$ as illuminated by ultra-violet light for 30 min. was $2.79\;mA/cm^2$. Perchlorate ions in water were shown to be degradable by a UV-illuminated $TiO_2$ powder/carbon/Nafion/carbon composite.

  • In this paper, the author describes a-C films grown in pure methane plasma without any diluent gas by using RF plasma-enhanced CVD, and the variations in their structural features and surface morphologies are examined as a function of substrate temperature. Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were performed to characterize the properties of the film.

  • In this work, we were investigated the effect of the additive gases on the relationship between bonding structure and mechanical properties of the deposited films when the DLC films were deposited on Si-wafer by the rf-PECVD method with the addition of small amounts of carbon dioxide and nitrogen to the mixture gas of methane and hydrogen. The deposition rate of the films increased as the rf-power increased, while it decreased with increasing the amount of additive gases. Also, as the carbon dioxide gas increased, the hydrogen content in the films decreased but the $sp^3/sp^2$ ratio of the films increased. In case of nitrogen gas, the hydrogen content decreased, however the $sp^3/sp^2$ ratio and nitrogen gas flow rate did not show a specific tendency.
