DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) films show very desirable surface interactions with high hardness, low friction coefficient, and good wear-resistance properties. The friction behavior of hydrogenated DLC film is dependent on tribological environment, especially surrounding temperature. In this work, the tribological behaviors of DLC (Diamond-like carbon) films, prepared by the radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) method, were studied in elevated temperatures. The ball-on-disk tests with DLC films on steel specimens were conducted at a sliding speed of 60 rpm, a load of 10N, and surrounding various temperatures of $25^{\circ}C,\;40^{\circ}C,\;55^{\circ}C\;and\;75^{\circ}C$. The results show considerable dependency of DLC tribological parameters on temperature. The friction coefficient decreased as the surrounding temperature increased. After tests the wear tracks of hydrogenated DLC film were analyzed by optical microscope, scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The surface roughness and 3-D images of wear track were also obtained by an atomic force microscope (AFM).

Stiction in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) has been a major failure mechanism. Especially, in RF MEMS switches, moving parts often suffered in-use and release related stiction problems. Some materials and methods have been used to prevent this problem. Diamond-like carbon (DLC) has not only been used as a protective material owing to its good mechanical properties but also has been used as a hydrophobic material. Its properties could be controlled by post annealing treatment in various conditions. We synthesized DLC films using a radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF PECVD) method on silicon substrates using methane ($CH_4$) and hydrogen ($H_2$) gas. Then, the change of the hydrophobic property of the films was investigated undervarious annealing temperatures in nitrogen and in oxygen ambient. The films, that were annealed above $700^{\circ}C$ in nitrogen ambient, showed a high contact angle of water (> $90^{\circ}$) even though their mechanical property was sacrificed to some degree. The structural variation and the changes of the hydrophobic and mechanical properties of the DLC films were analyzed by Raman spectrum, contact angle measurement, surface profiler, and a nanoindentation test.
Diamond-like carbon(DLC) films were synthesized using the rf-plasma CVD technique with the addition of small amounts of nitrogen and oxygen to a gas mixture of $CH_4$ and $H_2$. The gas flow ratio of $CH_4$ to $H_2$ was 2.4:1, and 3% , 13.6% of nitrogen were added to the gas mixture of $CH_4$ and $H_2$ for the deposition of DLC films. The film stress tended to decrease as the nitrogen concentration increased from 3% to 13.6%, probably due to the decrease of the number of the interlink between carbon atoms. The residual stress tended to slightly decrease when 3% of oxygen was added. Scratch tests were performed to investigate the adhesion between the DLC films and the Ti intelayer after pretreating the TiN surface with direct hydrogen plasma. The adhesion was enhanced by adding nitrogen and oxygen to the $CH_4$ and $H_2$ gas mixture. The adhesion for the 3% nitrogen addition was better than that for the 13.6% nitrogen addition. The Vicker's hardness of the DLC films was measured to be 1100Hv.
Cr-diamond-like carbon (Cr-DLC) films were deposited using a hybrid method involving both physical vapor deposition and plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. DLC sputtering was carried out using argon and acetylene gases. With an increase in the DC power, the Cr content increased from 14.7 to 29.7 at%. The Cr-C bond appeared when the Cr content was 17.6 at% or more. At a Cr content of 17.6 at%, the films showed an electrical conductivity of > 363 S/cm. The current density was 9.12 × 10-2 ㎂/㎠, and the corrosion potential was 0.240 V. Therefore, a Cr content of 17.6 at% was found to be optimum for the deposition of the Cr-DLC thin films. The Cr-DLC thin films developed in this study showed high conductivity and corrosion resistance, and hence, are suitable for applications in separators.

Transparent conductive films can serve as a critical component in displays, solar cells, lasers, optical communication devices, and solid state lighting. Carbon nanotube (CNT) based transparent conductive films are fabricated on glass and polymer substrates. CNTs typically exist in form of quasi-crystalline bundles or highly entangled bundles containing tens of individual nanotubes. To achieve full potential, CNTs must be dispersed in a solvent or other organic media. CNTs are acid treated with nitric acid then the stable dispersion of CNTs in polar solvent such as alcohols, DMF, etc. is achieved by sonication. The solubility of CNTs correlates well with the area ratio of the D and G bands from Raman spectrum. Thin films are formed from well dispersed CNT solutions using spray coating method. CNT thin films exhibit a sheet resistance ($R_s$) of nearby $10^3\;{\Omega}/sq$ with a transmittance of around 80% on the visible light range, which is attributed by excellent dispersion and interaction among CNTs, solvents and polymeric binders.

Carbon nitride thin films were deposited by reactive sputtering for the hard coating materials on Si wafer and tool steels. When the nitrogen content of carbon nitride film on tool steel is 33.4%, the mean hardness and elastic modulus are 49.34 GPa and 307.2 GPa respectively. The nitrided or carburised surface acts as the diffusion barrier which shows better adhesion of carbon nitride thin film on the steel surface. To prevent nitrogen diffusion from the film, steel substrate can be saturated by nitrogen forming a Fe$_3$N layer. The desirable structure at the surface after carburising is martensite, but sometimes, due to high carbon content an proeutectoid Fe$_3$C structure may form at the grain boundaries, leaving the overall surface brittle and may cause defects.

Epitaxial ($11{\bar{2}}0$) a-plane GaN films were grown on a ($1{\bar{1}}02$) R-plane sapphire substrate with photoresist (PR) masks using metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The PR mask with striped patterns was prepared using an ex-situ lithography process, whereas carbonization and heat treatment of the PR mask were carried out using an in-situ MOCVD. The heat treatment of the PR mask was continuously conducted in ambient $H_2/NH_3$ mixture gas at $1140^{\circ}C$ after carbonization by the pyrolysis in ambient $H_2$ at $1100^{\circ}C$. As the time of the heat treatment progressed, the striped patterns of the carbonized PR mask shrank. The heat treatment of the carbonized PR mask facilitated epitaxial lateral overgrowth (ELO) of a-plane GaN films without carbon contamination on the R-plane sapphire substrate. Thhe surface morphology of a-plane GaN films was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The structural characteristics of a-plane GaN films on an R-plane sapphire substrate were evaluated by ${\omega}-2{\theta}$ high-resolution X-ray diffraction. The a-plane GaN films were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to determine carbon contamination from carbonized PR masks in the GaN film bulk. After $Ar^+$ ion etching, XPS spectra indicated that carbon contamination exists only in the surface region. Finally, the heat treatment of carbonized PR masks was used to grow high-quality a-plane GaN films without carbon contamination. This approach showed the promising potential of the ELO process by using a PR mask.

The advantage of OTFT technology is that large-area circuits can be manufactured on flexible substrates using a low-cost solution process such as inkjet printing. Compared to silicon-based inorganic semiconductor processes, the process temperature is lower and the process time is shorter, so it can be widely applied to fields that do not require high electron mobility. Materials that have utility as electrode materials include carbon that can be solution-processed, transparent carbon thin films, and metallic nanoparticles, etc. are being studied. Recently, a technology has been developed to facilitate charge injection by coating the surface of the Al electrode with solution-processable titanium oxide (TiOx), which can greatly improve the performance of OTFT. In order to commercialize OTFT technology, an appropriate method is to use a complementary circuit with excellent reliability and stability. For this, insulators and channel semiconductors using organic materials must have stability in the air. In this study, carbon-doped Mo (MoC) thin films were fabricated with different graphite target power densities via unbalanced magnetron sputtering (UBM). The influence of graphite target power density on the structural, surface area, physical, and electrical properties of MoC films was investigated. MoC thin films deposited by the unbalanced magnetron sputtering method exhibited a smooth and uniform surface. However, as the graphite target power density increased, the rms surface roughness of the MoC film increased, and the hardness and elastic modulus of the MoC thin film increased. Additionally, as the graphite target power density increased, the resistivity value of the MoC film increased. In the performance of an organic thin film transistor using a MoC gate electrode, the carrier mobility, threshold voltage, and drain current on/off ratio (Ion/Ioff) showed 0.15 cm2/V·s, -5.6 V, and 7.5×104, respectively.

Carbon Nitride exhibits high electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity that are similar to the properties shown by diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. These diamond-like transport properties in Carbon Nitride come in a material consisting of $sp^2$-bonded carbon versus the $sp^3$-carbon of DLC. The diamond-like properties and nondiamond-like bonding make NDLC an attractive candidate for applications. Liquid crystal (LC) alignment capabilities with ion beam exposure on carbon nitride thin films and Electro-Optical (EO) performances of the ion-beam aligned twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) with oblique ion beam exposure on the Carbon Nitride thin film surface were studied. An excellent uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure on the Carbon Nitride thin films was observed. In addition, the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD were achieved. Finally, we achieved the residual DC property of the ion-beam- aligned TN-LCD on the Carbon Nitride thin film.

Although tribological behavior of Si incorporated DLC films have been intensely investigated, their mechanical properties were not consistent among previous publications. The present work reported the structural change by adding Si, and their effects on the mechanical properties. Si incoporated DLC films were deposited using mixtures of benzene and diluted silane with hydrogen of various volume fractions. We could obtain the films of $X_{si}$ (defined by the Si fraction without considering hydrogen) ranging from 0.01 to 0.21, and found that the mechanical properties of the films changed significantly in the range less than $X_{si}=0.06$. In this range, the hardness and stress increased with Xsi. For higher content of Si, the hardness and stress showed saturated behavior with $X_{si}$. This behavior was discussed in terms of the changes in atomic bond structures.
