  • A novel non-enzymatic oxalic acid (OA) sensor based on the platinum/carbon black-nickel-reduced graphene oxide (Pt/CBNi-rGO) nanocomposite is reported. The nanocomposites were prepared by the ethylene glycol reduction method. Their morphology and chemical composition were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results clearly demonstrated the formation of the Pt/CB-Ni-rGO nanocomposite. The electrocatalytic activity of the Pt/CB-Ni-rGO electrode was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. It was determined that the appropriate amount of Pt enhanced the catalytic activity of Pt for oxalic acid electro-oxidation. Moreover, the modified electrode was determined to be highly selective for oxalic acid without interference from compounds commonly found in urine including uric acid and ascorbic acid. The chronoamperometric signal gave a wide linearity range of 20 μM-60 mM and the detection limit (3σ) was found to be 2.35 μM. The proposed method showed high selectivity, stability, and good reproducibility and could be used with micro-volumes of sample for the detection of oxalic acid. Finally, the oxalic acid content in artificial and control urine samples were successfully determined by our proposed electrode.

  • Electro-micromechanical techniques were applied using four-probe method for carbon nanotube (CNT) or nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites with their content. Carbon black (CB) was used to compare with CNT and CNF. The fracture of carbon fiber was detected by nondestructive acoustic emission (AE) relating to electrical resistivity for double-matrix composites test. Sensing for fiber tension was performed by electro-pullout test under uniform cyclic strain. The sensitivity for fiber damage such as fiber fracture and fiber tension was the highest for CNT/epoxy composites, and in CB case they were the lowest compared with CNT and CNF. Reinforcing effect of CNT obtained from apparent modulus measurement was the highest in the same content. The results obtained from sensing fiber damage were correlated with the morphological observation of nano-scale structure using FE-SEM. The information on fiber damage and matrix deformation and reinforcing effect of carbon nanocomposites could be obtained from electrical resistivity measurement as a new concept of nondestructive evaluation.

  • This paper is focused on the development of the flexible electrode for disc-type polymer actuators using Segmented Polyurethane(SPU). This paper consists of two parts. The one is about the mechanical property such as elastic modulus. these parameters mainly affect behaviors of polymer actuators and the other is about the electro-chemical property such as the surface resistance of the composite electrode affects the strength of electrostatic force, results in the deformation of polymer actuators. The Young's modulus was measured by UTM. As result, by increasing the modulus of a body of polymer actuators, the maximum displacement of polymer actuators are decreased. The surface resistance of the electrode was measured by 4 point probe system. Compared with the conductive silver grease, the displacement of polymer actuators using carbon black(CB) composite electrodes is comparably small but CB composite electrode should be the practical approach for the improvement of the performance of all-solid actuators, compared with another types of electrode materials.

  • In this paper, electrical properties of nanostructured carbon blacks (CB)-filled high density polyethylene (HDPE) composites were investigated as a function of temperature, which were prepared by the conventional melt-mixing method. The composites were irradiated with electron beam in a dosage of 30∼150 kGy to enhance an electronical reproducibility and to reduce a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) phenomenon. And, gel contents (%) of irradiated CB/HDPE composites were estimated by solvent extraction method. From the experimental results. the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) intensity of the composites was strongly depended on the CB content and particle size. And, the increase of gel contents (%) and disappearance of NTC behavior of the composites were identified at a dosage of 60 kGy. It was also found that the electron beam irradiation made an improvement of electrical reproducibility of the composites. This result was probably due to the reduction of the freedom of CB movement at above the melting temperature of the polymer crystalline, resulting in increasing the crosslinking structure of the composites.

  • There are many kinds of protection methods for marine structures by using and environmental condition. Coating protection method, one of these methods is being widely adopted to both all ground and marine structures. In this study, by adding some additives such as Zn powder(Zn), carbon black(CB) to epoxy anti-corrosive paint, the effect to promote corrosion resistance was investigated with electrochemical method. Corrosion potentials with additives shifted to negative direction than no additive. However passivity current density increased than no additive except for Zn(20)+CB(10), especially, additive of Zn(20)+CB(10) showed the smallest passivity current density. Polarization resistance of Zn(20)+CB(10) by both cyclic voltammogram and impedance measurement was the largest value than other additives. And also surface phenomenon by adding Zn(20)+CB(10) was observed a good add condition not showing bubbling than other additives.

  • In this study, the tearing energy and the rate of crack propagation of natural rubber (NR) compounds were evaluated to improve the crack resistance of tank-track pads. Although the factors affecting the crack resistance properties of NR compounds are various in this experiment, the effects of filler(carbon black) and the crosslinking system were evaluated. When the amount of accelerator is equal to that of sulfur( eg. efficient vulcanization), the compound shows the most excellent in the aged mechanical properties and the crack resistance properties. The ISAF carbon black(CB) having a good reinforcing characteristics was better than any other CB grades in physical properties and processablity. The optimum content was 50phr.

Polarization resistance in both cyclic voltammogram and impedance measurement of an additive of Zn(20)+CB(10) was also the largest value, compared to other additives. Furthermore, rusting and bubbling was not observed on the surface of the test specimen with the additive of Zn(20)+CB(10), compared to other specimens. It is suggested that the corrosion resistance of the anti-corrosive paint can be improved by using some additives.

  • In this study, the fluorinated carbon blacks(CB) were used to reduce the negative temperature coefficient (NTC) phenomenon of the CB-filled high density polyethylene(HDPE) compounds in the fluorination pressure of 0.1-0.4 MPa. The changes in surface properties of the CB were investigated by using FT-IR, XPS and contact angle measurements. From the FT-IR results, the fluorinated CB showed the C-F absorption peak at 1400-1000 cm$^{-1}$ and the peak intensity was increased with increasing the fluorination pressure. Also, the analysis of XPS spectra of the fluorinated CB indicated that fluorine content was increased with increasing the fluorination pressure. Meanwhile, the surface free energy of the fluorinated CB was decreased with increasing the fluorination pressure. Consequently, the increase of fluorine contents on CB made a disappearance of NTC behaviors of CB/HDPE compounds, which was probably due to the reduction of CB reaggregation after melting point of the HDPE, resulting from decreasing the surface free energy of CB particles.

  • Nondestructive damage sensitivity of carbon nanotube(CNT) and nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites with their adding contents was investigated using electro-micromechanical technique. Carbon black (CB) was used only for the comparison with CNT and CNF. The fracture of carbon fiber was detected by acoustic emission (AE), which was correlated to the change in electrical resistance, ΔR under double-matrix composites (DMC) test. Stress sensing on carbon nanocomposites was performed by electro-pullout test under uniform cyclic loading. At the same volume fraction, the damage sensitivity for fiber fracture, matrix deformation and stress sensing were highest for CNT/epoxy composite, whereas for CB/epoxy composite they were the lowest among three carbon nanomaterials (CNMs). Damage sensitivity was correlated with morphological observation of carbon nanocomposites. Homogeneous dispersion among CNMs could be keying parameters for better damage monitoring. In this study, damage sensing of carbon nanocomposites could be evaluated well nondestructively by the electrical resistance measurement with AE.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are widely used in polymer composites as filler materials to enhance various characteristics of the composites because of their remarkable mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. In this study, we investigate the effects of MWCNTs on the electrical and wear characteristics of high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) composites, and compare the results with the effects of carbon black (CB). The HIPS composites are classified as Bare-HIPS, MWCNT-HIPS composites containing 2, 3, 4, and 5 wt% MWCNTs, and CB-HIPS containing 17 wt% CB. Electrical characteristics are evaluated by measuring the surface resistance using a 4-point probe. Wear characteristics are evaluated using the reciprocating wear test, and a chrome steel ball with a curvature of 6.3 mm is used as the counterpart. The results show that the addition of MWCNTs or CB can improve the electrical and wear characteristics of HIPS composites. In the case of MWCNT-HIPS composites, surface resistance, friction coefficient, and specific wear rate decrease as the concentrations of MWCNTs increase. Moreover, the addition of MWCNTs is more effective in improving the electrical and wear characteristics of HIPS composites compared to the addition of CB. To fabricate the HIPS composite with appropriate electrical and wear characteristics, more than 4 wt% MWCNTs is added to HIPS.
