  • The mechanical reliability of flexible devices has become a major concern on their commercialization, where the importance of reliable bonding is highlighted. In terms of component materials' properties, it is important to consider thermal damage of polymer substrates that occupy large area of the flexible device. Therefore, room temperature bonding process is highly advantageous for implementing flexible device assemblies with mechanical reliability. Conventional epoxy resins for the bonding still require curing at high temperatures. Even after the curing procedure, the bonding joint loses flexibility and exhibits poor fatigue durability. To solve this problems, low-temperature and adhesive-free bonding are required. In this work, we develop a room temperature bonding process for polymer substrates using carbon nanotube heated by microwave irradiations. After depositing multiple-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) on PET polymer substrates, they are heated locally with by microwave while the entire bonding specimen maintains room temperature and the heating induces mechanical entanglement of CNT-PET. The room temperature bonding was conducted for a PET/CNT/PET specimen at 600 watt of microwave power for 10 seconds. Thickness of the CNT bonding joint was very thin that it obtains flexibility as well. In order to evaluate the mechanical reliability of the joint specimen, we performed lap shear test, three-point bending test, and dynamic bending test, and confirmed excellent joint strength, flexibility, and bending durability from each test.

  • The effects of thermal treatment on CNTs, which were coated with a-$CN_x$ thin film, were investigated and related to variations of chemical bonding and morphologies of CNTs and also properties of field emission induced by thermal treatment. CNTs were directly grown on nano-sized conical-type tungsten tips via the inductively coupled plasma-chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD) system, and a-$CN_x$ films were coated on the CNTs using an RF magnetron sputtering system. Thermal treatment on a-$CN_x$ coated CNT-emitters was performed using a rapid thermal annealing (RTA) system by varying temperature ($300-700^{\circ}C$). Morphologies and microstructures of a-$CN_x$/CNTs hetero-structured emitters were analyzed by FESEM and HRTEM. Chemical composition and atomic bonding structures were analyzed by EDX, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS. The field emission properties of the a-$CN_x$/CNTs hetero-structured emitters were measured using a high vacuum (below $10^{-7}$ Torr) field-emission measurement system. For characterization of emission stability, the fluctuation and degradation of the emission current were monitored in terms of operation time. The results were compared with a-$CN_x$ coated CNT-emitters that were not thermally heated as well as with the conventional non-coated CNT-emitters.

  • Carbon nanotube(CNT) materials are expected a stable current collector without the phenomena such as oxidizing and melting of grid by redox electrolyte and with low cost. In this paper, two types of dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSCs) with Pt abd CNT as a counter electrode were fabricated, then the energy conversion efficiency characteristics were investigated. The main purpose of this study is to find out the possibility of CNT material as cheap current collector of a large scale DSSC module. In addition, the Hall coefficient were measured by using FCM analysis.

  • Fabrication of dot-patterned carbon nanotube (CNT) emitters with excellent field emission properties using photo-sensitive CNT paste is described. The photosensitive CNT paste showed good photopatternability, which led us to easily form $10-{\mu}m-diameter$ dot arrays. We presented a parametric study on formulating the photo-sensitive paste and their resultant field emission characteristics.

  • As environmental pollution getting worse, biodegradable materials have been drawn more attention than ever. In this study, polylactic acid (PLA)/carbon nanotubc (CNT) nanocomposites were manufactured via extrusion molding and injection molding, In order to change the crystallinity, annealing treatment was done for different time span, Crystallization kinetics of PLA was analyzed by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and it was confirmed that a proper amount of CNT can increase the crystallization rate of PLA. In addition, the presence of CNT significantly accelerates the hydrolytic degradation rate of PLA, however, it decreases with the increase of crystallinity. The reason is that degradation may occur in the PLA/CNT interface easily, and the molecular structure of the composite becomes dense with the increase of crystallinity.

  • We present a mass productive and reproducible assembly technique of a single bundle of single-walled carbon nanotubes (sb-SWNTs) using dielectrophoresis (DEP). Gold electrodes with 10 gaps made via microlithography were used to align the carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The magnitude and type of applied electric field were investigated to verify their effects on CNT assembly. The optimum assembling conditions in which sb-SWNTs could be positioned at a desired site were experimentally identified, and the characteristics of the assembled sb-SWNTs were evaluated from AFM, Raman spectroscopy, and I-V curve. This assembly method has potential for applications such as gas sensors or electronic devices.

  • Recently, carbon nanotubes(CNTs) have been demonstrated to possess remarkable mechanical and electronic properties, in particular, for field emission applications. Its high aspect ratio and extremely small diameter, hollowness, together with high mechanical strength and high chemical stability, are advantages for use in field emitter. In this paper, we demonstrate electrical discharge properties from carbon nanotube cathode electrodes to use as an emitter electrode of vacuum gauges. Vertically aligned $2{\times}2mm^2$ CNT arrays on the silicon substrate were synthesized by the thermal CVD method on Fe catalytic metal, and a glass patterning by the sand blast method and the silicon/glass anodic bonding processes were applied to make samples with 2 electrodes. The field emission was examined under the vacuum range of $10^{-3}$ Torr.

  • In this article, the critical buckling of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) embedded in Kerr's medium is studied. Based on the nonlocal continuum theory and the Euler-Bernoulli beam model. The governing equilibrium equations are acquired and solved for CNTs subjected to mechanical loads and embedded in Kerr's medium. Kerr-type model is employed to simulate the interaction of the (SWNT) with a surrounding elastic medium. A first time, a comparison with the available results is made, and another comparison between various models Winkler-type, Pasternak-type and Kerr-type is studied. Effects of nonlocal parameter and aspect ratio of length to diameter of nanobeam, as well as the foundation parameters on buckling of CNT are investigated. These results are important in the mechanical design considerations of nanocomposites based on carbon nanotubes.

  • This paper dealt with multi-scale natural frequency characteristics of wavy CNT (carbon nanotube) reinforced composites by applying the Mori-Tanaka method, rule of mixture, and Halpin-Tsai equation. By compelling benefit of an ad-hoc Eshelby tensor, the load-transfer characteristics of CNT with a waviness implanted in the polymer matrix was determined. The numerical results obtained are in good agreement with those reported by other investigators. Furthermore, the new results reported in this paper show the interactions between CNT weight, waviness ratios and layup sequences of laminated composites. Key observation points are discussed and significant considerations are given in practical designing of CNT reinforced composites.
