In spite of the potential medicinal significance and a wide range of pharmacologic properties of Platycodon grandiflorum, the molecular mechanism of its roots is still unknown. The present study was conducted to profile proteins from 3, 4 and 5 months aged diploid and tetraploid roots of Platycodon grandiflorum using high throughput proteome approach. Two-dimensional gels stained with CBB, a total of 68 differential expressed proteins were identified from the diploid root out of 767 protein spots using image analysis by Progenesis SameSpot software. Out of total differential expressed spots, 29 differential expressed protein spots (${\geq}2-fold$) were analyzed using LTQ-FTICR MS whereas a total of 24 protein spots were up-regulated and 5 protein spots were down-regulated. On the contrary, in the case of tetraploid root, a total of 86 differential expressed proteins were identified from tetraploid root out of 1033 protein spots of which a total of 39 differential expressed protein spots (${\geq}2-fold$) were analyzed using LTQ-FTICR MS whereas a total of 21 protein spots were up-regulated and a total of 18 protein spots were down-regulated. It was revealed that the identified proteins from the explants were mainly associated with the nucleotide binding, oxidoreductase activity, transferase activity. Taken together, the identified proteins may be helpful to identify key candidate proteins for genetic improvement of plants.

This paper propose the structure of real-time face detection hardware architecture for robot vision processing applications. The proposed architecture is robust against illumination changes and operates at no less than 60 frames per second. It uses Modified Census Transform to obtain face characteristics robust against illumination changes. And the AdaBoost algorithm is adopted to learn and generate the characteristics of the face data, and finally detected the face using this data. This paper describes the face detection hardware structure composed of Memory Interface, Image Scaler, MCT Generator, Candidate Detector, Confidence Comparator, Position Resizer, Data Grouper, and Detected Result Display, and verification Result of Hardware Implementation with using Virtex5 LX330 FPGA of Xilinx. Verification result with using the images from a camera showed that maximum 32 faces per one frame can be detected at the speed of maximum 149 frame per second.

Creativity is crucial in designing and producing attractive accessaries and daily supplies as well as art works. Generative design can be a paradigm to be used to obtain novel ideas or motifs for creative design works. This paper introduces a generative design method which comes up with unique ring models using genetic algorithm. It presents how the genetic algorithm works in terms of candidate solution coding, operators, and fitness evaluation function. The proposed method allows the customers to express their personal preference and later the preference to be reflected in fitness evaluation. In the final stage of the proposed method, several ring models are suggested for customers to choose on their own. The chosen ring models can be put into physical rings with the help of a 3D printer because the models are expressed in 3D geometric structures.
To transmit video bit stream over low bandwidth such as wireless channel, high compression algorithm like H.264 codec is exploited. In transmitting high compressed video bit-stream over low bandwidth, packet loss causes severe degradation in image quality. In this paper, a new algorithm for recovery of missing or erroneous motion vector is proposed. Considering that the missing or erroneous motion vectors in blocks are closely correlated with those of neighboring blocks. Motion vector of neighboring blocks are clustered according to average linkage algorithm clustering and a representative value for each cluster is determined to obtain the candidate motion vector sets. As a result, simulation results show that the proposed method dramatically improves processing time compared to existing H.264/AVC. Also the proposed method is similar to existing H.264/AVC in terms of visual quality.
The present study examined influence of various ischemic duration on extent of focal ischemic brain injury induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in rats. The MCAO was produced by insertion of a 17 mm silicone-coated 4-0 nylon surgical thread to the origin of MCA through the internal carotid artery for 30, 60, 90, 120 min (transient) or 24 hr (permanent) in male Sprague-Dawley rats under isoflurane anesthesia. Reperfusion in transient MCAO models was achieved by pulling the thread out of the internal carotid artery. Only rats showing neurological deficits characterized by left hemiparesis and/or circling to the left, were included in cerebral ischemic groups. The rats were sacrificed 24 hr after MCAO and seven serial coronal slices of the brain were stained with 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride. Infarct size was measured using a computerized image analyzer. Ischemic damage was common in the frontoparietal cortex (somatosensory area) and the lateral segment of the striatum while damage to the medial segment of the striatum depended on the duration of the occlusion. In the 30-min MCAO grouts, however, infarcted region was primarily confined to the striatum and it was difficult to clearly delineate the region since there was mixed population of live and dead cells in the nucleus. Infarct volume was generally increased depending on the duration of MCAO, showing the most severe damage in the permanent MCAO group. However, there was no significant difference in infarct size between the 90-min and 120-min MCAO groups. % Edema also tended to increase depending on the duration of MCAO. The results suggest that the various focal ischemic rat models established in the present study can be used to evaluate in vivo neuroprotective activities of candidate compounds or to elucidate pathophysiological mechanisms of ischemic neuronal cell death.
Advancements in the field of proteomics have provided great opportunities for the development of diagnostic and therapeutic tools against human diseases. In this study, we analyzed haptoglobin and amyloid A protein levels of vivax malaria patients with combinations of depletion of the abundant plasma proteins, 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE), image analysis, and mass spectrometry in the plasma between normal healthy donors and vivax malaria patients. The results showed that the expression level of haptoglobin had become significantly lower or undetectable in the plasma of vivax malaria patients due to proteolytic cleavage when compared to healthy donors on 2-DE gels. Meanwhile, serum amyloid A protein was significantly increased in vivax malaria patient's plasma with high statistical values. These 2 proteins are common acute phase reactants and further large scale evaluation with a larger number of patient's will be necessary to establish the possible clinical meaning of the existential changes of these proteins in vivax malaria patients. However, our proteomic analysis suggests the feasible values of some plasma proteins, such as haptoglobin and serum amyloid A, as associating factor candidates for vivax malaria.
In this paper, we propose a new method for detecting objectionable images with an active shape model. Our method first learns the shape of breast lines through principle component analysis and alignment as well as the distribution of intensity values of corresponding landmarks, and then extracts breast lines with the learned shape and intensity distribution. To accurately select the initial position of active shape model, we obtain parameters on scale, rotation, and translation. After positioning the initial location of active shape model using scale and rotation information, iterative searches are performed. We can identify adult images by calculating the average of the distance between each landmark and a candidate breast line. The experiment results show that the proposed method can detect adult images effectively by comparing various results.

Referring expressions are natural language constructions used to identify particular objects within a scene. In this paper, we propose a new deep neural network model for referring expression comprehension. The proposed model finds out the region of the referred object in the given image by making use of the rich information about the referred object itself, the context object, and the relationship with the context object mentioned in the referring expression. In the proposed model, the object matching score and the relationship matching score are combined to compute the fitness score of each candidate region according to the structure of the referring expression sentence. Therefore, the proposed model consists of four different sub-networks: Language Representation Network(LRN), Object Matching Network (OMN), Relationship Matching Network(RMN), and Weighted Composition Network(WCN). We demonstrate that our model achieves state-of-the-art results for comprehension on three referring expression datasets.
For privacy protection, we propose a vehicle license plate region detection method in road view image served from portal site. Because vehicle license plate regions in road view images have different feature depending on distance, long distance vehicle license plate regions are not detected by feature of low resolution. Therefore, we suggest a method to detect short distance vehicle license plate regions by edge feature and long distance vehicle license plate regions using MSER feature. And then, we select candidate region of vehicle license plate region from detected region of each method, because the number of the vehicle license plate has a structural feature, we used it to detect the final vehicle license plate region. As the experiment result, we got a recall rate of 93%, precision rate of 75%, and F-Score rate of 80% in various road view images.
Apoptotic signals are typically accompanied by activation of aspartate-specific cysteine proteases called caspases, and caspase-3 and -7 play crucial roles in the execution of apoptosis. Previously, using the proteomic approach, protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) was found to be a candidate substrate of caspase-7. This abundant 55 kDa protein introduces disulfide bonds into proteins (via its oxidase activity) and catalyzes the rearrangement of incorrect disulfide bonds (via its isomerase activity). PDI is abundant in the ER but is also found in non-ER locations. In this study we demonstrated that PDI is cleaved by caspase-3 and -7 in vitro. In addition, in vivo experiment showed that it is cleaved during etoposide-induced apoptosis in HL-60 cells. Subcellular fractionation showed that PDI was also present in the cytosol. Furthermore, only cytosolic PDI was clearly digested by caspase-3 and -7. It was also confirmed by confocal image analysis that PDI and caspase-7 partially co-localize in both resting and apoptotic MCF-7 cells. Overexpression of cytosolic PDI (ER retention sequence deleted) inhibited cell death after an apoptotic stimulus. These data indicate that cytosolic PDI is a substrate of caspase-3 and -7, and that it has an anti-apoptotic action.
