The prevalence of E. coli(K99), Clostridium perfringens and Cryptosporidium parvum on acute diarrhea in suckling Korean native calves was evaluated in the field by a veterinary practice. In diagnosis, fecal samples were directly collected from calves that had diarrhea between 2 and 98 days of age. 40 samples were analyzed in October, 2006 and December, 2006. Clostridium perfringens and Cryptosporidium parvum were detected in 15(37.5%) and 4(10.0%) of the samples from diarrhetic calves, respectively. However, E. coli(K99) was not detected in the samples from diarrhetic calves. There was no significant difference(p>0.05) between October(5, 25.0%) and December(10, 50.0%) in incidence of detected Clostridium perfringens from diarrhetic calves. On the other hand, significant differences (p<0.05) in the detection rate of Clostridium perfringens were found between the within 1 month age and all other age groups. In the detection of Cryptosporidium parvum, there was no significant difference(p<0.05) between October (2, 10.0%) and December(2, 10.0%) in the incidence of detected Cryptosporidium parvum from diarrhetic calves. These results suggest that causative agents of calf diarrhea occurred frequently with Clostridium perfringens infection than E. coli(K99) and Cryptosporidium parvum.

From July to December 2022, we investigated the incidence of enteric pathogens causing diarrhea in calves under 100 days old at 22 farms across Korea. A total of 354 calves (including 247 dairy calves and 107 Korean native calves) were included. We used commercially available rapid diagnostic kits to identify five enteric pathogens, including bovine rotavirus (BRV), bovine coronavirus (BCoV), Cryptosporidium. Escherichia coli (E. coli), and Giardia. This study investigated how factors such as age, season, and birth month, which can influence the incidence of intestinal pathogens, affect the incidence of these pathogens in diarrheic dairy calves and Korean native calves. Our study found that the incidence of diarrhea-causing pathogens differed between dairy and Korean native calves. In diarrheic dairy calves, bovine rotavirus (BRV) incidence rates, correlated with season and birth month. Similarly, Cryptosporidium incidence C were associated with age and season, while Giardia incidence rates varied by season and birth month. Korean native calves, on the other hand, exhibited seasonal and birth month-related variations in BRV incidence rates, with Cryptosporidium incidence rates influenced by birth month.

Importance: Although the role of bovine coronavirus (BCoV) in calf diarrhea and respiratory disorders is well documented, its contribution to neurological diseases is unclear. Objective: This study conducted virological investigations of calves showing diarrhea and respiratory and neurological signs. Methods: An outbreak of diarrhea, respiratory, and neurological disorders occurred among the 12 calves in July 2022 in Istanbul, Türkiye. Two of these calves exhibited neurological signs and died a few days after the appearance of symptoms. One of these calves was necropsied and analyzed using molecular and histopathological tests. Results: BCoV RNA was detected in the brain, lung, spleen, liver, and intestine of the calf that had neurological signs by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Immunostaining was also observed in the intestine and brain. A 622 bp S1 gene product was noted on gel electrophoresis only in the brain. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the BCoV detected in this study had a high proximity to the BCoV strain GIb with 99.19% nucleotide sequence homology to the strains detected in Poland, Israel, Türkiye, and France. No distinct genetic lineages were observed when the brain isolate was compared with the respiratory and enteric strains reported to GenBank. In addition, the highest identity (98,72%) was obtained with the HECV 4408 and L07748 strains of human coronaviruses. Conclusions and Relevance: The strain detected in a calf brain belongs to the GIb-European lineage and shares high sequence homology with BCoV strains detected in Europe and Israel. In addition, the similarity between the human coronaviruses (4408 and L07748) raises questions about the zoonotic potential of the strains detected in this study.
Diarrhea is reported as one of the most common diseases in calves. It is thought to be a major cause of productivity and economic loss to cattle producers. The aim of this study is to provide a better understanding of well-known diarrheagenic pathogens and incidence of diarrhea in Korean calves. In this study, the relationship of calf diarrhea and pathogens were investigated from calves under 60 days of age in five areas of Korea from April to July, 2016. Of examined fecal samples, 38.3% was positive for any pathogens, and Giardia was the most common pathogen (25.5%). The incidence of diarrhea was 31% from pathogen-negative fecal samples whereas 61.1% from pathogen-positive fecal samples, suggesting high correlation between pathogenic factor and diarrhea. In addition, 80% of E. coli (K99) positive calves showed diarrhea, suggesting E. coli (K99) could be highly pathogenic. The incidence of diarrhea and infection rate increased with age. Rotavirus was revealed as a major pathogen in calves under 20 days of age, and the infection rate of Giardia increased rapidly in calves 20 to 39 days of age. The information on interconnections between clinical diarrhea and pathogens would contribute to developing strategies for treatment of calf diarrhea.
This study was designed to examine therapeutic effect of bee(Apis mellifera L.) venom in calves with bacterial diarrhea. Calves with bacterial diarrhea were administered with bee venom and therapeutic drug, respectively. In the bee venom-treated group, 69 calves were acupunctured once a day for 3 conseutive days. Two local acupoints of Jiao-chao(GV-1, at the indentation between the base of tail and the anus) and Bai-hui(GV -20, in the dorsal midline of the lumbo-sacral space) were stung by the bee. In the therapeutic drug-treated group, 55 claves were intramuscularly injected with a standard dosage of antibiotic (ciprofloxacin, 2.5 mg/kg of body weight) and antidiarrheal drug (berberine cholride, 10mg/head) once a day for 3 consecutive days. At post-treatment, 81.2% of the bee venom-treated calves and 76.4% of the therapeutic drugtreated calves were recovered from bacterial diarrhea. Bee acupuncture therapy showed in calves without side effects such as allergy hemorrhage, or infection. It might be concluded that apitherapy was affective in controlling of calves with bacterial diarrhea.
Presently, viral isolation in the diarrheal feces can be reached by many tools such as fluorescent antibody test(FA), negative contrast electron microscopy(NCEM), virus neutralization test, cell culture, and so on. The purpose of the study was to aimed at the establishment of simplified NCEM technique which can be efficiently applied for diarrheal feces and also the understanding on prevalence of viral-induced diarrhea in calves. One hundred fourty-seven korean indigenous calves with diarrhea were examined to their feces by the modified NCEM. Among them, 98(66.7%) were confirmed to have one or more viruses in feces. The viruses detected were identified as rotavirus(33.3%), coronavirus(16.3% ), togavirus(10.2%) and herpesvirus(0.7%). Ten cases of combined viral infection were consisted of 8 with rotavirus+coronavirus, one with rotavirus+togavlrus and one with rotavirus+herpesvirus. Dirrheal types could classified by yello-wish watery(44.9a ), blood-tinged(19.7% ), white watery(17.7% ) , brownish watery(14.3%), greenish watery(3.4%) diarrhea, respectively. Yellowish watery diarrhea(66cases) was frequently included rotavirus(31.8%), coronavirus(15.2%), and togavirus(13.6%), respectively. Consequently, these results suggest that the modified NCEM is reliable and efficient diagnostic tool for detection of viruses in the diarrheal feces and many calves rearing in Chonnam province have been exposed to some enteric viral agents mainly including rotavirus and coronavirus.
The therapeutic effects and immune responses with Oidenlandiae Herba administration(17.5%, 1g/30 kg, everyday, PO) were investigated in calves(1 to 3 months old) with diarrhea from 159 Korean native calves(76 heads from A farm and 83 heads from B farm) in Jeju. The causes of 47 calves with diarrhea were coronavirus(1 head) and rotavirus(1 head), coccidium(5 heads) and bacteria(40 herds). PCV values were significantly increased 2 weeks after administration of Oldenlandiae Herba in A form, compared by those of pre-treatment(p<0.05). However RBC, TP, WBC, fibrinogen levels were not significantly changed. The significant difference were not detected in changes of AST, BUN and creatinine. The CD14+ distribution rate were increased in 1 week after administration of Oldenlandiae Herba, compared by that of pre-treatment(p<0.05), however, certain tendencies of changes were not observed in distribution rates of CD4+ CD8+ and CD19+, respectively. The rate of death was 20.1%(36/179 calves) in 2004, however, it was decreased to 12.6%(20/159 calves) by Oldenlandiae Herba administration at 2 farms from Jeju in 2005. In conclusion, the administration of Oldenlandiae Herba was effective for treatment of calves with diarrhea.

This study was conducted to examine the enteropathogens and clinical aspects of diarrhea of the 211 Korean native calves during the suckling period. The experimental results were summerized as follows: 1. The 206 Korean native calves (97.6%) were affected with diarrhea during the suckling period. 2. Of 156 diarrheal feces tested, Rotavirus were detected from 108(69.2%) feces of $K^+99$ E coli were detected from 23(14.7%) feces and Eimeria spp were detected from 33(21.2%) feces. But Salmonella spp and Cryptosporidium spp were not detected. 3. Rotavirus were detected from 2 to 84 days of life, $K^+99$ E coli were detected from 5 to 54 days and Eimeria spp were detected from 33 to 84 days of life. 4. Physical appearances of the diarrheal feces were not affected specifically according to the enteropathogens, but were affected by the severity of diarrhea and the diets.
A consecutive Jiao Chio acupuncture therapy was performed for 3 days in the 45-90 days old 11 calves of which have been shown severe watery diarrhea. The discharge of the infected calves was yellowish brown in color. Two calves of these patients were infected wi pulmonary disease as well as diarrhea. Thus, Su Qi and Fei Yu acupuncture therapy was carried out additionally after dosing with antibiotics twice for The two infected calves. Blood chemical values and serum neutralizing antibody titers were checked, and total blood cell count was also carried out to know the therapeutic effect before and after(21 days) acupuncture therapeutics. The results are as follows ; 1, The diarrhea has ceased one day after begining of the acupuncture therapy in 5 calves, and the cessation of the diarrhea in remaining calves occurred in 1 calf each on 3rd and 4th day, and 2 calves on 6th day, respectively. Two calves infected with pulmonary disease as well diarrhea were cured 8 days after the begining of the therapcutics. 2. Rotaviruses wire detected in the feces of 2 calves, and bovine diarrhea viruses were detected in the 8 calves by the test for serum neutralizing antibody titers, and bovine coronaviruses were also detected in 5 calves. Four calves of the 5 bovine coronavirus infected calves were also infected with bovine diarrhea viruses. 3. Total leucocyte number, total amount of serum protein, and amount of fibringen were slightly increased, while total erythrocyte number, and erythrocyte packed cell volume were slightly decreased. These valucs were statistically not significant. Electrolytes of Na/sup +/, K/sup +/ and Cl/sup -/ were slightly decreased but these values also were not significant. These results indicate that the acupuncture therapeutics arc significantly effective to remove the viral diarrhea in the young calves.
These studies were performed to establish more effective surgical method for correcting congenital atresia coli in calves. Distal colon fistulation, proximal colon fistulation and colon anastomosis which could be applied for surgical repair of intestinal obstruction were carried out in goatlings experimentally and in calves with atresia coli clinically. After treatment of the animals clinical signs, blood component values, body weight gain, survival and necropsy findings were observed. In goatlings, clinical signs after colon fistulation were diarrhea, anorexia and vitality loss, and those of proximal colon fistulation group were severer than those of distal colon fistulation group. Surviviability after operation was 9~16 weeks in distal colon fistulation group, 2~8 weeks in proximal colon fistulation group, and 2-3 days in colocolic anastomosis group, respectively. There were no alterations in blood component values among experimental groups. Weight gain rates were 54.6% in distal colon fistulation group and 42.9% in proximal colon fistulation group compared with those of control. Necropsy findings observed in experimental groups were distension of intestine and excessive fluid in abomasum and intestine. Two calves with atresia coli died 1 day and 6 days after operation but one with colon fistulation survived more than two months. Preoperative clinical signs in calves with atresia coli were abdominal distension, progressive anorexia, no defecation and postoperative clinical signs wert diarrhea and periodic abdominal distension. After operation there were no alterations in blood component values between the calf with atresia coli and control calf. Weight gain rate of calf with atresia coli was similar to that of control but revealed the tendency to decrease from the 2nd month after operation. Necropsy findings observed in two calves with atresia coli were intestinal distension. intraluminal excessive fluid, blind atretic sac and absence of intrarectal content. It was concluded that proximal or distal colon fistulation could be available for surgical correction of congenital atresla coli and prognosis of distal colon fistulation was better than of proximal colon fistulation, but that extensive colocolic anastomosis could not be compatible with life in ruminants.
