  • Taylor series has a complicated structure comprising of various concepts in college major mathematics. This subject is a strong tool which has usefulness and applications not only in calculus, analysis, and complex analysis but also in physics, engineering etc., and other study. However, students have difficulties in understanding mathematical structure of Taylor series convergence correctly. In this study, after classifying students' mathematical characteristic into three categories, we use structural image of Taylor series convergence which associated with mathematical structure and operation acted on that structure. Thus, we try to analyze the understanding of Taylor series convergence and present the results of this study.

  • In order to improve the problem-solving abilities and enhance the academic achievement of under achieving students for university basic mathematics, P-university has opened the basic mathematics and practice education courses. These education courses are operated as prerequisite subject of Calculus and we are progressing the class focused on presentation with variety learning materials by organizing level-based classes In this paper, we analyzed the acquired grade and the result of teaching assessment of 1,106 students registered in the 30 classes that the teaching portfolio of the basic mathematics and practice education courses were submitted to support 'Accreditation for Engineering Education of Korea'. In addition, we tried to find attention points and improved solutions on operating the level-based class of the basic mathematics and practice education courses based on the 'Continuous Quality Improvement Report' of teaching portfolio submitted by each professor who is in charge of this class.

  • Through the teaching experiments, we investigated a series of processes for obtaining the differential coefficient at x=0 of the exponential function $y=2^x$ based on the process of constructing the natural constant e and the understanding of it. and all of the students who participated in this study were students who had no experience of calculating the derivative of the exponential function. The purpose of this study was not to generalize the responses of students but to suggest implications for mathematical concept mapping related to calculus by analyzing various responses of students participating in experiments. It is expected that the accumulation of research data derived in this kind of research on the way of understanding and composition of learners will be an important basic data for presenting the learning model related to calculus.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical factors affecting the longevity of fixed retainers and the influence of fixed retainers on periodontal health in periodontitis patients. Methods: In total, 52 patients with at least 2 years of follow-up after periodontal and orthodontic treatment were included in this study. After scaling and root planing, orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances or clear aligners was performed. Fixed retainers with twist-flex stainless steel wires were bonded to the palatal or lingual sides of anterior teeth. Changes in clinical parameters, including the plaque index, gingival index, calculus index (CI), probing pocket depth, and radiographic bone levels, were evaluated before bonding of fixed retainers and at a 12-month follow-up. Cumulative survival rates (CSRs) for retainer failure were evaluated according to sex, site, CI, stage of periodontitis, and the severity of the irregularity with the log-rank test and hazard ratios (HRs). Results: Twelve months after bonding of fixed retainers, improvements were observed in all clinical parameters except CI and radiographic bone gain. The overall CSR of the retainers with a CI <1 at the 12-month follow-up after bonding of fixed retainers was significantly higher than that of the retainers with a CI ≥1 at the 12-month follow-up (log-rank test; P<0.001). Patients with stage III (grade B or C) periodontitis had a higher multivariate HR for retainer failure (5.4; 95% confidence interval, 1.22-23.91; P=0.026) than patients with stage I (grade A or B) periodontitis. Conclusions: Although fixed retainers were bonded in periodontitis patients, periodontal health was well maintained if supportive periodontal treatment with repeated oral hygiene education was provided. Nonetheless, fixed retainer failure occurred more frequently in patients who had stage III (grade B or C) periodontitis or a CI ≥1 at 12-month follow-up after bonding of fixed retainers.

  • Recently in major industrial areas, there has been a rapidly increasing demand for 'Computational Thinking', which is integrated with a computer's ability to think as a human world. Developed countries in the last 20 years naturally have been improving students' computational thinking as a way to solve math problems with CAS in the areas of mathematical reasoning, problem solving and communication. Also, textbooks reflected in the 2009 curriculum contain the applications of various CAS tools and focus on the improvement of 'Computational Thinking'. In this paper, we analyze the cases of mathematics education based on 'Computational Thinking' and discuss the mathematical content that uses the CAS tools including Sage for improving 'Computational Thinking'. Also, we show examples of programs based on 'Computational Thinking' for teaching Calculus in university.

  • This study takes a look at Polya's analysis on Archimedes' "The Method" from a math-historical perspective. We, based on the elaboration of Polya's analysis, investigate the analytic geometric characteristics of Archimedes' "The Method" and discuss the way of using the characteristics in education of school calculus. So this study brings up the educational need of approach of teaching the definite integral by clearly disclosing the transition from length, area, volume etc into the length as an area function under a curve. And this study suggests the approach of teaching both merit and deficiency of the indivisibles method, and the educational necessity of making students realizing that the strength of analytic geometry lies in overcoming deficiency of the indivisibles method by dealing with the relation of variation and rate of change by means of algebraic expression and graph.

  • A unified mathematical model of the equations of generalized magneto-thermoelasticty based on fractional derivative heat transfer for isotropic perfect conducting media is given. Some essential theorems on the linear coupled and generalized theories of thermoelasticity e.g., the Lord- Shulman (LS) theory, Green-Lindsay (GL) theory and the coupled theory (CTE) as well as dual-phase-lag (DPL) heat conduction law are established. Laplace transform techniques are used. The method of the matrix exponential which constitutes the basis of the state-space approach of modern theory is applied to the non-dimensional equations. The resulting formulation is applied to a variety of one-dimensional problems. The solutions to a thermal shock problem and to a problem of a layer media are obtained in the present of a transverse uniform magnetic field. According to the numerical results and its graphs, conclusion about the new model has been constructed. The effects of the fractional derivative parameter on thermoelastic fields for different theories are discussed.

  • There are serious difficulties with management of general mathematics education courses because of enormous gap between freshman's ability of mathematics and lack of problem solving ability. In this paper, we try to find methods so we can reduce the difficulties. By utilizing students survey, management of Mathematics Cafe and setting example classes for Calculus and Linear Algebra we suggest effective management strategies and teaching-learning methods.

  • In 1984, Johnson[A bounded convergence theorem for the Feynman in-tegral, J, Math. Phys, 25(1984), 1323-1326] proved a bounded convergence theorem for hte Feynman integral. This is the first stability theorem of the Feynman integral as an $L(L_2 (\mathbb{R}^N), L_2(\mathbb{R}^{N}))$ theory. Johnson and Lapidus [Generalized Dyson series, generalized Feynman digrams, the Feynman integral and Feynmans operational calculus. Mem, Amer, Math, Soc. 62(1986), no 351] studied stability theorems for the Feynman integral as an $L(L_2 (\mathbb{R}^N), L_2(\mathbb{R}^{N}))$ theory for the functional with arbitrary Borel measure. These papers treat functionals which involve only a single integral. In this paper, we obtain the stability theorems for the Feynman integral as an $L(L_1 (\mathbb{R}^N), L_{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^{N}))$theory for the functionals which involve double integral with some Borel measures.

  • In this paper, we conduct a questionnaire survey on the actual conditions and the test on the basic scholastic ability of the students who register for the course, Introduction of Business Mathematics. We want to find the ways to improve the teaching-learning methods for this course. Especially, the registered students have difficulties in the following the course because they have not studied Calculus in their high school. So we give them several assignments on the Webwork system, an internet based homework management system, and analyze its effect on the students' scholastic achievement. And we propose a teaching-learning method suitable for the course.
