  • Diabetic cardiomyopathy has been suggested to be caused by abnormal intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ homeostasis in the myocardium, which is partly due to a defect in calcium transport by the cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR).   • The dc resistivity dc magnetization and thermopower of layered perovskite La1.6Ca1.4Mn2O7.07 have been studied. The ceramic sample of La1.6Ca1.4Mn2O7.07 undergoes the metal-insulator transition at 120K while a first-order phase transition from a ferromagnetic phase to a paramagnetic phae is observed at 260 K=TC This behavior is quite different from that of the well-known double exchange ferromagnets such as La1-xCaxMnO3 This phenomenon could be understood by considering the effects of the anisotropic double exchange interaction caused by two dimensional Mn-O-Mn networks in this materials. The dc magnetization between 120K and 250K is nearly constant and decreases rapidly with increasing temperature above 250K The measurements of dc resistivity and thermopower indicate that Zener polaron hopping conduction takes place above 260 K.

  • Layered perovskite La$_{2-x}$Ca$_{l-x}$Mn$_2$O$_{7}$ phases were synthesized by solid state reaction. Single phase R-P could be obtained in the range of 0.4$_{2-x}$Ca$_{l-x}$Mn$_2$O$_{7}$. About 30% of MR ratio was obtained at 270K when 5 T of magnetic field was applied.ied.ied.ied.

  • Long-term degradation of coment barrier by diffusion was studied with reactive transport modeling. The result of modeling showed that cement barrier was altered about 30cm thickness after 50,000 years. The pH decreased from 13.0 to 11.9 because of depletion of alkali ions, and dissolution/precipitation of portlandite and CSH (Calcium Silicate Hydrate). In addition, porosity increased about 0.3 because of dissolution of portlandite and $CSH2.0(Ca_2SiO_3(OH)_2:0.17H_2O)$. The solubility of uranium also increased with the increase of pe value The results of this study indicate that long-term degradation of comet can enhance the transport of nuclide by changing pH, pe, porosity in barrier.

Effect of Exchangeable Cation on Radionuclide Diffusion In Compacted Bentonite

  • Diffusion coefficient is a critical parameter for predicting radiological source term(migration rate and flux of radionuclide) through given near field conditions in spent fuel or high level waste repository. The effect of exchangeable cation-$Na^+$ and $Ca^{2+} - on the diffusion of $I^- \;and^3H$ (as HTO) in compacted bentonite was examined using a through-diffusion method. Bentonite material used here was compacted to a density of 1.3 Mg/m$^3$, and Na-bentonite was saturated with a solution of 100 mol NaCl/m$^3$ and Ca-bentonite with 50 $mol\;CaCl_2$/m$^3$. The results show that effective diffusion coefficients are generally higher by a factor of two to five in Ca-than Na-clay. This is attributed to the larger particle size of Ca-compared to Na-bentonite; hence, Ca-bentonite has a greater proportion of relatively large pores, which make a greater contribution to mass transport than small pores. Although the nature of the exchangeable cation affects mass diffusion in compacted bentonite, the effect is small and not likely to influence performance assessment modeling of compacted bentonite-based barriers.

  • The purpose of this paper is the development of an agent-based pedestrian simulation model. The simulation model is based on the Cellular Automata theory. The model consists of four components: initialization, pedestrian generation, lateral movement, and front movement components. We have applied this model for experiment about pedestrian facility. In particular, we have experimented how the installation of fence is effective to resolve conflict pedestrian movements in different directions. We have found that the installation of the fence as a pedestrian facility can divide conflict moving pedestrians effectively. We have also found that the effect of the fence is bigger in slightly congested pedestrian flows than in severely congested pedestrian flows.

  • According to the recent increase in air traffic a more efficient air traffic flow control is required. This paper proposes the algorithm for efficient air traffic flow control. Aeronautical communication environment is different from the common communication environment since it needs a direct communication between stations (or airplanes) and requires a strict priority for safety message. Moreover, the wide area for basic service causes high propagation delay. In this paper, by using existing CSMA/CA Media Access Control (MAC) protocol, we set the message priorities according to air traffic condition (congestion airport area, approach control area, En route area, and ocean area). This prioritization scheme enables the data transmission with higher access probability. Simulation results confirm that our protocol shows better performance in terms of channel efficiency and success probability compared to exisiting CSMA/CA protocol.

Electrical Transport and Magnetoresistance of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3: Agx (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) Composites

  • The structural, magnetic and magnetotransport properties of $La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3$: $Ag_x$ (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) composites were investigated systematically. X-ray and EDX analysis indicated that Ag is not substituted into the main $La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3$ phase and remains an additive to the second phase at the grain boundary. The Curie temperature first decreased from 269 K for x = 0 to 257 K for x = 0.1 and then remained nearly unchanged with increasing Ag content. For the x > 0.1 samples, a second transition temperature ($T_{MI2}$) was observed in the resistance curves. At temperatures below 150 K, a significant enhancement in MR was observed while high temperature MR decreased with increasing Ag content. The maximum MR was observed to be 55% in the x = 0.4 sample at 10 K and a 6T magnetic field, this value is larger than that of pure $La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3$ (53% at 265 K and 6 T). In addition, at low fields (H < 1T), a sharp increase in the MR was observed.

Effects of 1,25 Dihydroxycholecalciferol and Ca Ionophore A23187 on Ca Transports in Bone and Bone Cells (뼈조직과 세포에서의 칼슘이동기전에 대한 1,25 dihydroxycholecaliciferol과 Ca Ionophore A23187의 영향)

  • Various types of evidence suggest that some changes in cellular in cellular calcium may well signal the initiation of a chain of events leading to the physiological effects of the bone resorbing agents. The effects of 1,25-dihydorxycholecalciferol, $1.25\textrm{(OH)}_2\textrm{D}_3$, Ca ionophore A23187 and calcium antagonist, diltiazem on bone resprption and the cellular transport of Ca were investigated. Bone $^{45}\textrm{Ca}$ desaturation experiment was realized in isolated heterogenous rat bone cells after equilibrating the cells with $^{45}\textrm{Ca}$. Results of $^{45}\textrm{Ca}$ desaturation experiments were analysed by fitting the $^{45}\textrm{Ca}$ desaturation curve to a model of 2 exponential terms which indicated the presence of 2 exchangeable cellular calcium pools. $1.25\textrm{(OH)}_2\textrm{D}_3$ (0.5ng/$m\ell$) induced significantly bone resorption which was decreased by the physiological dose of diltiazeme(above 5nmol/$m\ell$) although it was ineffective alone. Ionophore A23187 (0.2$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$) decreased Ca release from bone but no additivity of effect with diltiazem(20nmol/$m\ell$) was observed. $1.25\textrm{(OH)}_2\textrm{D}_3$ (0.5ng/$10^{6}$ cells) had a moderate effect on the two kinetic phases of $^{45}\textrm{Ca}$ desaturation curve and these values were normalized when diltiazeme (20nmol/$10^{6}$ cells) was added along with $1.25\textrm{(OH)}_2\textrm{D}_3$. Ionophore($0.05\mu\textrm{g}$/$10^{6}$ cells) alone increased specifically the value of the slow turnover rate which was not affected by addition of diltiazem. The hypothesis concerning the involvement of calcium in bone resorption seems in fact to be verified in case of $1.25\textrm{(OH)}_2\textrm{D}_3$ but more unsettled for Ca inophore A23187.

Relationship between Calcium/Inorganic Phosphorus and Parathyroid Hormone Concentrations in Dogs with Renal Failure (신부전증의 개에서 혈중 칼슘/무기인과 부갑상샘 호르몬의 관계)

  • Parathyroid hormone (PTH) regulates calcium (Ca) and phosphate transport. Secondary hyperparathyroidism usually occur in chronic renal failure (CRF), and it is a common complication of CRF in dogs and cats. Twenty one dogs with renal failure were enrolled in this study. Plasma Ca, inorganic phosphorus (iP) and PTH concentrations were measured. Dogs were divided into two groups by the ratio of Ca to iP (Ca/iP$\leq$1; Group I, Ca/iP$\leq$1.5; Group II). The PTH level between sexes ages were not significantly different. The PTH level and Ca/iP between two groups were significantly different (p < 0.0001). In conclusion, The ratio of Ca to iP may be considered as useful surrogator to predict PTH level of dogs with renal failure.
