The Research on the Heated CWDM(Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) Optical Transceiver for the Wavelength Compensation at the Low Temperature (저온 파장 보상을 위한 히터 내장형 CWDM(Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) 광 송수신기에 관한 연구)

  • This paper is the research on the heated CWDM optical transmitter for the wavelength compensation at the low temperature. In general, the wavelength deviation of DFB laser is around 0.1 nm/C. The wavelength of DFB laser shifts to longer(shorter) wavelength according to the temperature increase(decrease). Typical CWDM optical communication network has 20 nm channel spacing from reference center wavelength per each channel. There is some limitation problem in the range of operating temperature due to the channel interference. For solving the limited temperature range problem, especially at the low temperature, we use the heater on the DFB laser. As a result, we could realize the CWDM optical transmitter to meet +/-6.5 nm from reference center wavelength in the range of temperature at $-40{\sim}+85^{\circ}C$, which is applicable to the industrial field.

  • 광주파수에서 대역을 나누어주는 광필터를 이용하여, 기존의 2 코어를 이용한 단방향 광통신을 1 코어를 이용한 양방향 통신으로 전환하여 광선로 절감효과를 얻을 수 있다. 그러나 그런 양방향 통신에서 CWDM (coarse wavelength-division multiplexing) 광채널들에 대한 채널 감시가 요구된다. 정확한 정보전달을 위하여 광원의 특성을 모니터하고, 또한 보드의 신호 레벨에서 감시를 통하여 신호의 오전달을 감시한다. 본 발표논문에서는 광선로 절감에 따른 CWDM 광채널의 성능 개선을 위한 감시기술에 대하여 설명하고, 망교체시에 다른 선로에 영향을 최소로 하는 적절한 감시기술을 설명한다.

Polarization Insensitive CWDM Optical Demultiplexer Based on Polarization Splitter-rotator and Delayed Interferometric Optical Filter

  • We theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate a polarization-diversified four-channel optical demultiplexer (DeMUX) comprising a hybrid mode conversion-type polarization splitter rotator (PSR) and delayed Mach-Zehnder interferometer optical DeMUX for use in coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM)-based optical interconnect applications. The Si wire-based device fabricated by a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor-compatible process exhibited nearly the same filter spectral response irrespective of the input polarization state under the PSR. The device had an extremely low insertion loss of <1.0 dB, polarization-dependent loss of <1.0 dB, and interchannel imbalance of <0.5 dB, suppressing unwanted wavelength and polarization crosstalk from neighboring channels of <-20 dB at each peak transmission channel grid.

  • We propose a wavelength allocation method for bidirectional transmission in a coarse wavelength division multiplexing channel. The method can be accommodated by assigning a different upstream wavelength from the downstream wavelength at room temperature to eliminate penalties induced by backscattering, including Rayleigh backscattering. We suggest a procedure to obtain the minimum wavelength difference.

  • We propose a nonreciprocal filter based on coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) that reduces the upstream channel insertion loss in a passive optical network (PON). We also propose a method to increase the number of channels/optical network units (ONUs) in PON systems using the proposed filter to reduce the service cost per subscriber. Experimental results show that the PON system with the proposed 4-channel filter can reduce the power budget of the upstream and increase the number of ONUs by 3 to 4 times that of a conventional time-division multiplexing PON.

A Study on a Compact Coupler between an Optical Fiber and a Grating-assisted Graphene-embedded Silicon Waveguide for a Wavelength-selective Photodetector

  • We proposed an integrated wavelength-selective photodetector based on a grating-assisted contradirectional coupler and a graphene absorption layer for a coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) communication system. The center wavelength of the absorption spectrum of the proposed device can be tuned simply by changing the period of the grating, and the proposed device structure is suitable to forming a cascaded structure. Therefore, an array of the proposed device of different grating periods can be used for simultaneous wavelength demultiplexing and signal detection in a CWDM communication system. Our theoretical study showed that the designed device with a grating length of $500{\mu}m$ could have an absorption of 95.1%, an insertion loss of 0.2 dB, and a 3 dB bandwidth of 7.5 nm, resulting in a -14 dB crosstalk to adjacent CWDM channels. We believe that the proposed device array can provide a compact and economic solution to receiver implementation in the CWDM system by combining functions of wavelength demultiplexing and signal detection.

  • In accordance with the PON(passive optical network) could be setup, effective connections with light sources, optical detectors, and optical fibers are the best sensitive points to represent the efficiency of network. Therefore, in this paper we designed and fabricated optical transceiver connection chip that was consisted of channel waveguide, Y-branch, and CWDM on the 2" BK7 glass substrate. This chip can be used for 1.31/1.55${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ CWDM network and 1.55${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ region dense WDM network.work.

Design of a Cost-Effective Hybrid-Type PBEx Providing a High Power Budget in an Asymmetric 10G-EPON

  • This paper proposes a cost-effective hybrid-type power budget extender (PBEx) that can provide a high power budget of over 45 dB in an asymmetric 10-Gb/s Ethernet passive optical network (10/1G-EPON). The hybrid-type 10/1G-EPON PBEx comprises a central office terminal (COT) and remote terminal (RT) module supporting four channels and uses a coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) technology between the COT and RT for a reduction of fiber cost and efficient access network design. The proposed 10/1G-EPON PBEx can provide over a 40-km reach and 128-way split per CWDM wavelength with no modification of a legacy 10/1G-EPON system and can satisfy the error-free service in $10^{10}$ packet transmission.

  • A novel technology for CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexer) utilizing a PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit)-AWG (Arrayed Waveguide Grating) fabrication process is proposed. BPM (Beam Propagation Method) Simulation results on the employed parabolic-horn-type input slab waveguide of AWG and the performance of the 20 nm-channel spacing CWDM with flattened passband are presented. Waveguides of $0.75{\triangle}%$ have been used in this experiment and the insertion loss at the peak wavelength is 3.5 dB for a Gaussian spectrum and is 4.8 dB for a flat-top spectrum. The bandwidth at 3 dB is better than 10 nm and 13 nm for Gaussian and flat-top spectra, respectively.

  • We performed experiments on Hong-Ou-Mandel type two-photon interference with frequency entangled photon pairs at 1.5 ${\mu}m$ telecommunication band generated through femtosecond pulsed spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Two different angular frequencies ${\omega}_1$ and ${\omega}_2$ were selected using CWDM(coarse wavelength division multiplexing) filters at the output ports of the interferometer. The coincidence counting rates were measured with varying path-length difference between the two interferometer arms to observe the two-photon interference patterns of spatial beating. The obtained visibilities in the net coincidence were close to the theoretical limit of 100%.
