Magnetic Properties and Microstructures of Co-Cr-(Pt)-Ta Magnetic Thin Films Sputtered on Self-textured Substrates

  • The effects of Al micro-bumps on the magnetic properties of CoCr(Pt)Ta/Cr films deposited on glass substrates were investigated. The coercivity increased and the coercivity squareness decreased by incorporating Cr/Al underlayers. The cause of the coercivity increase is attributed to the reduction of Co(0002) texture, the increase of magnetic isolation of CoCr(Pt)/Ta grains, and the refinement of CoCr(Pt)/Ta grains deposited on Cr/Al underlayers. The effects of an Al overlayer on the magnetic properties of CoCr(Pt)Ta/Cr films were also studied. The decrease of coercivity squareness is ascribed to the magnetic isolation of CoCr(Pt)Ta grains.

Cr(VI) Resistance and Removal by Indigenous Bacteria Isolated from Chromium-Contaminated Soil

  • The removal of toxic Cr(VI) by microorganisms is a promising approach for Cr(VI) pollution remediation. In the present study, four indigenous bacteria, named LY1, LY2, LY6, and LY7, were isolated from Cr(VI)-contaminated soil. Among the four Cr(VI)-resistant isolates, strain LY6 displayed the highest Cr(VI)-removing ability, with 100 mg/l Cr(VI) being completely removed within 144 h. It could effectively remove Cr(VI) over a wide pH range from 5.5 to 9.5, with the optimal pH of 8.5. The amount of Cr(VI) removed increased with initial Cr(VI) concentration. Data from the time-course analysis of Cr(VI) removal by strain LY6 followed first-order kinetics. Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence, strain LY6 was identified as Pseudochrobactrum asaccharolyticum, a species that had never been reported for Cr(VI) removal before. Transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis further confirmed that strain LY6 could accumulate chromium within the cell while conducting Cr(VI) removal. The results suggested that the indigenous bacterial strain LY6 would be a new candidate for potential application in Cr(VI) pollution bioremediation.

  • This research describes effects of Si addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of the Al-Cr based alloys prepared manufactured using gas atomization and SPS (Spark Plasma Sintering) processes. The Al-Cr-Si bulks with high Cr and Si content were produced successfully using SPS sintering process without crack and obtained fully dense specimens close to nearly 100% T. D. (Theoretical Density). Microstructure of the as-atomized Al-Cr-Si alloys with high contents of Cr and Si was composed multi-phases with hard and thermally stable such as Al13Cr4Si4, AlCrSi, Al8Cr5 and Cr3Si intermetallic compounds. The average hardness values were 703 Hv for S5, 698 Hv for S10 and 824 Hv for S20 alloy. Enhancement of hardness value was resulted from the formation of the multi-intermetallic compound with hard and thermally stable and fine microstructure by the addition of high Cr and Si using rapid solidification and SPS process.

  • Thin CoCrTa/Cr films were deposited on glass substrates at $280^{\circ}C$ with or without Al underlayer. The coercivity of CoCrTa increased considerably by introducing an Al underlayer. The grain size of Cr thin film deposited on Al underlayer became smaller than that of Cr thin film deposited on glass substrate. The grain size of CoCrTa thin film was determined by Cr grain size. The cause of the coercivity increase seems to be associated with the refinement and uniform distribution of CoCrTa grains.

Adhesion of Cu/Interlayer/Polyimide Flexible Copper Clad Laminate Depending on the Ni-Cr-X Interlayers

  • Ni-Cr-X ternary interlayers were investigated to improve the adhesion of Cu/Ni-Cr/Polyimide flexible copper clad laminates. The ternary compounds are sputtered Ni-Cr-X films (where X is one of Nb, V, Mo, or Ti), and the effect of third elements on the adhesion was evaluated and investigated chemically and mechanically. The feel strength was higher in the order of Ni-Cr-Nb > Ni-Cr-V > Ni-Cr > Ni-Cr-Mo > Ni-Cr-Ti. Nb, which has a comparable standard electrode potential to Cr, increased the adhesion, while Ti, with a low standard electrode potential, degraded the adhesion. The Ni-Cr-Nb interlayer was amorphous, while Ni-Cr-Ti was partially crystalline. The similar morphology structure of the Ni-Cr-Nb interlayer with polyimide resulted in a better adhesion.

  • Electronic structures of Fe overlayers on Cr(Fe/Cr) films, with an Fe coverage of $1-20{\AA}$, have been investigated by using photoemission spectroscopy. Experimental results are compared with supercell band structure calculations for a system with monolayer (ML) Fe on each side of five layer Cr, Fe(1ML)/Cr(5ML)/Fe(1ML). The extracted Fe 3d partial spectral weight in Fe/Cr exhibits very interesting features for very thin Fe overlayers. First, a sharp emissionnear the Fermi energy is observed, which is expected to originate primarily from hybridization between Fe and Cr 3d electrons at the Fe/Cr interface, and partially from the Fe 3d surface states in the Fe overlayer. Second, other structures are observed at higher binding energies which resemble the Cr 3d valence bands, also suggesting large hybridization between Fe and Cr 3d states at the Fe/Cr interface. These conjectures are confirmed by band structure calculations for Fe(1ML)/Cr(5ML)/Fe(1ML).

  • The bi-layered films composed of Co-Cr-Ta layers and paramagnetic $Co_{67}Cr_{33}$ underlayer were deposited by suing Facing Targets Sputtering(FTS). The effects of $Co_{67}Cr_{33}$ underlayer on the crystallographic and magnetic characteristics of the Co-Cr-Ta layer deposited on the underlayer was investigated. The diffraction intensity $I_{p(002)}$ of Co-Cr-Ta layers on the $Co_{67}Cr_{33}$ layer was stronger than that of single layer and Co-Cr-Ta/Ti double layer. Therefore, the crystallinity of Co-Cr-Ta layer was imporved by the $Co_{67}Cr_{33}$ underlayer rather than Ti ones. However, te coercivity H$_{c\bot}$ of Co-Cr-Ta layers deposited on $Co_{67}Cr_{33}$ underlayer was as low as 250 Oe even at substrate temperature of $220^{\circ}C$. This H$_{c\bot}$ decrease seems to be attributed to the effect of the $Co_{67}Cr_{33}$ underlayer as well as interval time between deposition of the underlayer and the Co-Cr-Ta layer.

Visible light-induced reduction of Cr(VI) in cationic micelle solution

  • Cr(VI) reduction was successfully achieved in the presence of cationic micelles (CMs) under visible light illumination. Micelle formation of cationic surfactants seems to be critical in Cr(VI) reduction. Cr(VI) was reduced very fast above the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of CTAB solutions, but was not reduced at all either below or around the cmc of CTAB. The reduction rate of Cr(VI) was enhanced in the absence of dissolved oxygen, supporting that the removal of Cr(VI) should be achieved via a reductive pathway. When CTAB was substituted by Brij 35 or SDS, the reduction of Cr(VI) was negligible. This indicates that the electrostatic interaction between Cr(VI) and headgroups of surfactants is important in the visible light-induced Cr(VI) reduction in micellar solutions.

High rate magnetron sputtering of thick Cr-based tribological coatings

  • In this study, high rate deposition of thick CrNx films was carried out by crossed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering for the special application such as piston ring employed in automobile engine. For the high rate deposition and thick CrNx films formation with thickness of 30$\mu\textrm{m}$, high power density of $35W/cm^2$ in each target was induced and the multi-layer films of Cr/CrN and $\alpha$-Cr/CrN were synthesized by control of $N_2$ flow rate. The dynamic deposition rate of Cr and $\alpha$-CrN film was reached to 0.17$\mu\textrm{m}$/min and 0.12$\mu\textrm{m}$/rnin and the thick CrN$_{x}$. film of 30$\mu\textrm{m}$ could be obtained less than 5 hours. The maximum hardness was obtained above 2200 kg/mm$^2$ and adhesion strength was measured in about 70N, in case of multi-layers films. And the friction coefficient was measured by 0.4, which was similar to the value of CrN single-layer film.m.

Effects of Dietary Chromium Picolinate Supplementation on Growth Performance and Immune Responses of Broilers

  • Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of chromium (Cr) on the growth performance, bone trait, serum traits, and immune responses in broilers. The broilers were fed corn-soybean meal basal diet supplemented with Cr at level of 0(control), 200, 400, or 800 ppb in the form of chromium picolinate (CrPic). The broilers were fed treated diets for 6 weeks in Exp. 1, but the Cr supplement was removed for the last 3 weeks in Exp. 2. Exp. 1 showed that dietary supplement of Cr did not affect growth performance of the broiler, though improved feed efficiency (p<0.05) was observed during 0 to 3 weeks. Moreover, serum total (p<0.05) and HDL cholesterols (p<0.06) were significantly higher in pooled Cr added group at 6 weeks of age, however, the difference was not significant in Exp. 2. The pooled Cr added group in Exp.1 had significantly lower (p<0.05) alkaline phosphatase activity and higher (p<0.09) calcium at 3 weeks. Significantly lower phosphorus was also observed in Exp. 2. With continued supplement of Cr as in Exp. 1, the alkaline phosphatase activity maintained higher at 6 weeks, as opposed to significantly lower in Exp. 2, which had no further Cr supplement. Higher bone breaking strength was observed in 400 ppb Cr supplemented in Exp. 1, though not significantly different. Serum glucose and triglyceride were not affected by Cr supplement. Antibody against Infectious Bronchitis (IB) was significantly (p<0.05) higher with 400 ppb Cr supplemented, and anti-Newcastle disease (ND) antibody also tended to be higher (p<0.06) in pooled Cr added group at 6 weeks of age in Exp. 1. Peripheral blood blastogenesis activity was not different among the treatments. The results suggest that diet supplemented with 400 ppb CrPic may be beneficial to the broiler.
