  • Laser-welded Tailored Blank is the hottest thing in many automobile companies. But they demand on weld quality, reproducibility, and formability. So it is the great problem of automation of laser welding process. Therefore, it is requested to construct on-line process monitoring system on high accuracy. The light which is emitted from plasma and spatter in laser welding was detected by photo-diodes. It was found that the light intensity depends on welding speed. laser power, and flow rate of assist gas. The relationship between the plasma and spatter and the weld quality can be used for on-line laser weld monitoring systems.

  • The harsh nature of welding environments makes welding a prime candidate for process automation. Among the variety of welding processes available, gas metal arc welding is one of the most frequently used methods, primarily because it is highly suited to a wide range of applications, and also to automation. Automatic seam tracking method is one of the most demanded techniques for automatic control of arc welding. In this study a seam tracking system has been developed by using the welding arc itself as a sensor. This paper described the principle and experimental result of the arc sensor system, as well as the development and application of the automatic CO_2$ welding for the horizontal fillet welding. A basic problem in horizontal fillet welding is the prevention of hanging bead formation such as undercut at the vertical plate and overlap at the horizontal plate. To produce the symmetric bead shape, the relationship of bead shape to welding parameters(welding velocity, weaving width, weaving speed, tip to workpiece distance) was also investigated.

  • To get the appropriate welding process variables, mathematical modeling in conjunction with many experiments is necessary to predict the magnitude of weld bead shape. Even though the experimental results are reliable, it has a difficulty in accurately predicting welding process variables for the desired weld bead shape because of nonlinear and complex characteristics of welding processes. The welding condition determined for the desired weld bead shape may cause the weld defect if the welding current/voltage/speed combination is improperly selected. In this study, the $2^{n-1}$ fractional factorial design method and correlation parameter were used to investigate the effect of the welding process variables on the fillet joint shape, and the multiple non-linear regression analysis was used for modeling the gas metal arc welding(GMAW)parameters of the fillet joint. Finally, a fuzzy rule-based method and a neural network method were proposed so that the complexity and non-linearity of arc welding phenomena could be effectively overcome. The performance of the proposed neuro-fuzzy system was evaluated through various experiments. The experimental results showed that the proposed neuro-fuzzy system could effectively check the welding conditions as to whether or not weld defects would occur, and also adjust the welding conditions to avoid these weld defects.

  • This paper describes the weldability of carbon steel and stainless steel using 5㎾ $CO_2$ laser system with nearly multi-mode beam and a parabolic focusing mirror. In the laser welding of steels, major welding parameters are focal point, travel speed, beam power, shield gas and gap tolerance, etc.. Two kinds of gases(Ar, He) were used as a assist gas and supplied through the external nozzle. It is very important for optimum condition to remove plasma plume which absorbs laser beam and to obtain deep penetration and sound weld bead. Bead-on-plate welding tests were carried out for the experiments. Penetration data were obtained with various welding parameters and the effects of welding parameters were discussed. Butt welding tests were performed with various conditions. Only the optimum laser parameters assured good weld quality As a result of this study, We achieve the fundamental weldabilities using a high power $CO_2$ laser for carbon steel and stainless steel.

  • A weld quality assessment method is proposed in this work, which can be applied to the short-circuit mode in GMAW. Information about the welding signal trajectory, distribution of the signal duration at each sub-regions and short-circuit frequency is used to evaluate the weld quality. The weighted penalty, which is determined experimentally, is imposed for each abnormal signal. Performance of the proposed method is compared with the Simpson's method under the conditions of shielding gas reduction, workpiece surface contamination and joint gap in the butt and fillet welds. Although the proposed method predicts the weld quality with reasonable accuracy, further modification and extension to other metal transfer modes are needed as a further study.

  • $CO_2$ Welding which uses $CO_2$ instead of inert gas is most widely used in industrial sites. Welding rod for $CO_2$ Welding is roughly divided into solid wire and flux cored wire. $CO_2$ Welding has higher efficiency than any other welding methods, and also economic and speedy to handle, that's why is used frequently for welding general structures. As most of studies about $CO_2$ Welding are focused on metallurgical changes of successful joints, they developed theories about the change of configuration on weld parts. This study is especially focused on not only the change of configuration on weld parts, but also the change of the penetrating depth through changing the position of welding torch. For inspection, applied AWS A5.20 E70-1 among welding wires and fixed moving angles of torch, but controled the values of voltage and the position of welding. Also Automatic Feed Mechanism is used for exact movement of material, specimen is a piece of steel for general structures. By measuring and analyzing the configuration of sliced section and the values of welding leg length and welding throat after welding, the outcome about the changes turned out.

  • This paper has an aim to study the effect of PWHT and its conditions(peak temperature and holding time) on the tensile properties and impact toughness of FCAW weld metal in relation to microstructure. Impact toughness was evaluated to apply the cargo tank of liquified gas carriers under the various PWHT condition of each class societies. On the basis of these study, it was found that PWHT conditions within all class societies affect charpy absorbed energy of weld metal little or no, all PWHT weld metals kept similar level of charpy absorbed energy as as-weld weld metal down-to $-60^{\circ}C$ and finally indicated lower energy value than that of as-weld weld metal at $-75^{\circ}C$. It is because the precipitation of 2nd phase was controlled from welding consumable and the grain size was grown by PWHT.

  • The arc sensor has been most widely used for weld seam tracking through welding current or voltage variation. In this work, the relation between the arc light intensity and welding condition is investigated using heat balance in the Plasma for its possible application to seam tracking in the GMAW process. The arc light intensity is derived to be the function of the arc length and welding current Experiments are carried out to verify the proposed heat balance model. Performances of least square and integration methods to process the signals for seam tracking are compared experimentally. Predicted arc light intensity shows reasonably good agreement with experimental results. The weld seam is successfully tracked through the arc light intensity. The least square and integration methods demonstrate almost same performance of seam tracking with $CO_2$gas shielding.

  • The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of compounded welding by using acoustic emission (AE) signals and doing a source location for weld heat affected zone (HAZ) through tensile testing. This study was carried out an SWS 490A high strength steel for electric shield metal arc welding, SMAW; $CO_2$ gas metal arc welding, GMAW($CO_2$); and gas tungsten arc welding, GTAW/TIG. Data displays are based on the measured parameters of the AE signals, along with environmental variables such as time and load. For instance, Gutenberg-Richter magnitude-frequency relationship (G-R MFR) offers useful b-value in data analysis. Namely event identification, source location gives the X- and Y-coordinates of the AE source. And K-means clustering analysis by Euclidean distance confirmed that was powerful to source location. Generally, strength of welded metal zone was stronger than strength of base metal. As the result, confirmed certainly that fracture is produced in HAZ instead of welded metal zone from source location.
