  • Carbon nanotubes (CNT) were synthesized by arc-discharge method. To fabricate CNT sensor, CNT powder was dispersed in ${\alpha}$-Terpinol($C_{10}H_{17}OH$) solution. The CNT tilms were fabricated by screen printing method on the interdigitated Pt/Pd alloy electrode. The microstructure of CNT film was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In order to investigate the gas sensing characteristics of the film, the CNT film was experimented to measure NO response and recovery time. The CNT sensor with a heater was compared to that without a heater. And this sensor shows better reproductibility and faster recovery time than another CNT sensors. We suggest the possibility to utilize a CNT as new sensing materials for environmental monitoring.

  • This study presents an excellent planar heater based on low-dimensional composites. By optimizing the ratio of 1D carbon nanotubes (CNT) and 2D MXene (Ti3C2TX), it is possible to create a planar heater that has superior electrical conductivity and high heat generation characteristics. Low-dimensional composites were prepared by mixing CNT paste and MXene solution with eco-friendly waterborne polyurethane (WPU). In order to find the optimal mixing ratio for the MXene-CNT-WPU composites, samples with MXene to CNT weight ratios of 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, 1:7, and 1:14 were investigated. In addition to these different weight ratios, 5 wt% WPU was equally applied to each sample. It was confirmed that the higher the weight ratio of CNT, the lower the sheet resistance and the higher the heating temperature. In particular, when the MXene-CNT-WPU planar heater was fabricated by mixing MXene and CNT at a weight ratio of 1:7 and 1:14, the heating temperature was higher than the heating temperature of a CNT-WPU planar heater. These characteristics are due to the optimized mixture of the 1D materials (CNT) and the 2D materials (MXene) causing the formation of a flat surface and a dense network structure. The low-dimensional composites manufactured with the optimized mixing ratios found in this study are expected to be applied in flexible electronic devices.

  • Many practical applications of carbon nanotubes(CNTs) have been proposed and there have been attempts to utilize CNT films as transparent electrodes for solar cells and displays. Our group has considered the use of the CNT film as a thin film heater (TFH) and proposed it for the first time and reported the thermal behavior of the TFH made of single walled CNTs. However, due to the relatively high electrical resistance of the CNT film, using the TFH in application areas requiring high heat flux has been a difficult problem. To overcome this obstacle, we adopted a 'branch electrodes' concept to increase the film conductance dramatically. If two branch electrodes are inserted into a TFH whose original electrical resistance is R, the total resistance will be reduced to R/9. Because of the increased aspect ratio, the resistance of each segmented TFH will be reduced to R/3. Furthermore, since they are connected in parallel, the total resistance reduces to R/9. This could be extended to n branch electrodes, and the total resistance of the film will be reduced to R/(n+1)2, if the resistance of electrodes are negligibly small. We fabricated the heaters with different number of branch electrodes. The number of branch electrodes of the fabricated heaters are 0, 2, 4, 8 and their electrical resistance are 101.4, 39.5, 20.0, $15.4{\Omega}$, respectively. We applied 20V to each heater and monitored the temperature variations. We could achieve high heating temperature even with low voltage supply. This technique could be applied to relevant industrial applications which need high power film heater.

  • As a substitute of ITO material, carbon nanotube (CNT) is widely studied for transparent conductive film (TCF). Current sheet resistance of CNT-TCF is about 100 ${\Omega}$/sq at 80% transmittance. But CNT-TCF performance in manufacturable level is about 500 ${\Omega}$/sq at 83% based on the Topnanosys Co's result. Therefore, critical issue in CNT-TCF research is to reduce the sheet resistance with manufacturing reliability. In this report, recent developments using CNT-TCF are introduced. Touch panel, transparent LED signboard, transparent speaker and transparent heater are representative examples. Also I describe the future issues and prospect of CNT-TCF for the flexible display.

  • The micro-gas sensor based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was fabricated and its gas sensing characteristics on nitrogen dioxide ($NO_{2}$) have been investigated. The sensor consists of a heater, an insulating layer, a pair of contact electrodes, and CNT-sensing film on a micromachined diaphragm. The heater plays a role in the temperature change to modify sensor operation. Gas sensor responses of CNT-film to $NO_{2}$ at room temperature are reported. The sensor exhibits a reversible response with a time constant of a few minutes at thermal treatment temperature of $130^{\circ}C$.

  • In this paper, the Curing process for Epoxy Molding Compound (EMC) Package was developed by comparing the performance of the EMC/Cu Bi-layer package manufactured by the conventional Hot Press process system and Carbon Nanotubes (CNT) Heater process system of the surface heating system. The viscosity of EMC was measured by using a rheometer for the curing cycle of the CNT Heater. In the EMC/Cu Bi-layer Package manufactured through the two process methods by mentioned above, the voids inside the EMC was analyzed using an optical microscope. In addition, the interfacial void and warpage of the EMC/Cu Bi-layer Package were analyzed through C-Scanning Acoustic Microscope and 3D-Digital Image Correlation. According to these experimental results, it was confirmed that there was neither void in the EMC interior nor difference in the warpage at room temperature, the zero-warpage temperature and the change in warpage.

  • Carbon nanotube (CNT) mats grown by thermal chemical vapor deposition on a micromachined substrate with a chrome heater and a diaphragm were investigated as sensing materials of resistive gas sensors for nitrogen dioxide ($NO_{2}$) gas. The aligned CNT mats fabricated into mesh and serpentine shapes by the patterned cobalt catalyst layer. CNT mats showed a p-type electrical resistivity with decreasing electrical resistance upon exposure to $NO_{2}$. All sensors exhibited a reversible response at a thermal treatment temperature of $130^{\circ}C$ for about 5 minutes. The resistance change to $NO_{2}$ of the mesh-shaped CNT mats was larger than that of the serpentine-shaped CNT mats.
