This study was conducted to compare physiological responses of Pinus densiflora, Populus ${\times}$ tomentiglandulosa, Quercus acutissima and Eleutherococcus sessiliflorus exposed to SO$_2$, by measuring photosynthetic pigment contents and SOD activity. Four woody plants were exposed to relatively high SO$_2$ concentration (500 ppb, 800 ppb) for 8h day$^{-1}$ for 7 days in a chamber. Photosynthetic pigment contents in the leaves of four species decreased with increase of SO$_2$ concentration; also chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total carotenoid content were significantly different among tree species and treatments. The ratio of chlorophyll b to chlorophyll a of E. sessiliflorus and Q. acutissima increased for 500 ppb treatment but decreased at 800 ppb. This result showed that chlorophyll a was destroyed by 500 ppb SO$_2$ and chlorophyll b by 800 ppb SO$_2$. Therefore, the sensitivity of chlorophyll a to SO$_2$ may be higher than that of chlorophyll b. SOD activity differed significantly between species and treatments. SOD activity of E. sessiliflorus and Q. acutissima increased at 500 ppb but decreased at 800 ppb, but P. densiflora and P ${\times}$tomentiglandulosa maintained high SOD activity at both 500 ppb and 800 ppb. Based on the photosynthetic pigment contents and SOD activity in the leaves of four tree species, the tolerance of P. ${\times}$ tomentiglandulosa to SO$_2$ was the highest of four tree species.
This experiment was conducted to find out the varietal differences in the relationships of chlorophyll and nitrogen concentration with leaf greenness value (SPAD value). We used two rice varieties with different leaf color type: Hwaseongbyeo has pale green leaves, and Gwanganbyeo has dark green leaves. SPAD value was correlated with chlorophyll a concentration significantly in both varieties, but not with chlorophyll b in Hwaseongbyeo. The correlation coefficients between SPAD value and nitrogen concentration of rice flag leaves were highly significant. However, the regression analysis between SPAD value and nitrogen concentration of rice flag leaves showed different relation among varieties. The slope of the regression line in Gwanganbyeo was steeper than that in Hwaseongbyeo. In conclusion, SPAD value can be applied to estimate the chlorophyll a concentration without consideration of varietal differences. Chlorophyll b and nitrogen concentration in the leaf were regressed to the SPAD values differently with varieties. This implies that the SPAD value can not be used directly to estimate chlorophyll b and nitrogen concentration without consideration of varietal differences.
Biological and chemical characteristics and trophodynamics in the frontal zone were investigated in the southern waters of Korea, Temperature, nutrients (dissolved inorganic nitrogen, $PO_4^{3-}-P$, and $SiO_2^{-}-Si$) chlorophyll a and zooplankton were collected and analyzed along the two transects, the frontal zone and the non-frontal zone, in April, 1994. Nutrients were higher in the non-frontal zone than in the frontal zone. But chlorophyll a concentration was high in the frontal zone, particularly at the 20 m depth of the main frontal station (St. TII-2), where was located at the junction between the stratified layer and the non-stratified layer with the lowest nutrients. Zooplankton was more abundant in the frontal zone than in the non-frontal zone, particularly at the innermost station of the frontal zone. Copepods showed high composition rate more than $90\%$ at all stations except the main frontal station (St. TII-2). At the main frontal station (St. TII-2), euphausiids and siphonophores were dominated. Chlorophyll a revealed a significant relationships with $SiO_2^{-}-Si$ in both transects and copepods in the non-frontal zone. Copepods also showed very close relationship with siphonophores in the frontal zone. This suggests that the abundance of copepods could be controlled as bottom-up in the non-frontal zone and as top-down in the frontal zone.
The extraction yield and storage stability of Codium fragile pigments extracted in acetone, ethanol or methanol were studied. Methanol was the most effective solvent for pigment extraction, providing an extraction yield of $25.0{\pm}2.10\;mg/g$ (my base). As shown by TLC and HPLC analysis, chlorophyll a(0.40 mg/g) and chlorophyll b(1.94 mg/g) were the major pigment components in dried Codium fragile. The total chlorophyll content of Codium fragile stored a 40C in light or dark conditions for 30 weeks remained at 23.2% and 58.4% respectively. The effect of metal ions ($Cu^{++}$, $Zn^{++}$, $Fe^{++}$ and $Mg^{++}$) on pigment stability was analyzed Among the four metal ions $Cu^{++}$ was the most effective stabilizer of Codium fragile pigments during storage, and $Zn^{++}$ ion was the second most effective. In the presence of 1 mM $Cu^{++}$, the total chlorophyll retained in Codium fragile stored at 40C in light or dark conditions was increased to 47.0% and 88.8% after 30 weeks storage, respectively. The optimum concentrations of $Zn^{++}$ and $Cu^{++}$ for pigment stabilization under dark conditions were 0.5 mM and 0.1 mM, respectively.

We investigated the effect of artificial warming on chlorophyll contents and net photosynthetic rates of 2-year-old Quercus variabilis seedlings in a nursery open-field experiment site. 64 seedlings were each planted in $1m{\times}1m$ plots (n = 4) and warmed with infrared lamps. The air temperature in warmed plots was $3^{\circ}C$ higher than that of control plots. Chlorophyll contents and net photosynthetic rates were measured in May, July, August, September and October, 2011. In May, September and October chlorophyll contents and net photosynthetic rates were significantly higher in warmed plots than in control plots. However, there were no significant differences in chlorophyll contents and net photosynthetic rates between warmed plots and control plots in July and August. It seemed that early developed leaves of warmed plots in May with higher chlorophyll contents could lead to higher net photosynthetic rates whereas there was no difference in net photosynthetic rates due to saturation of chlorophyll contents in July and August. Increased biosynthesis of chlorophyll due to warming might increase net photosynthetic rates in September and October.
Wheat sprout (Triticum aestivum) shows excellent nutritional and health effects due to the contents in amino acids, minerals, and other nutrients rich in chlorophyll and vitamins. In this study, spent coffee grounds were used to cultivate the wheat sprout for 12 day. An amount of 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% (w/w, based on commercial sterile soil media) spent coffee grounds were used under the same conditions. Total length and weight of wheat sprout, aboveand below-ground length and weight, and the chloropyll contents were compared. Soil media were analyzed before and after wheat cultivation, showing that 40% and 60% (w/w) coffee media promoted wheat growth in view of length and weight. Chlorophyll contents in each group showed almost constant values, while 100% (w/w) coffee media led to a slight decrease. In conclusion, spent coffee grounds stimulated wheat growth, showing nearly stable contents of chlorophyll.
This study was carried out to analyze the organic acids, polyphenols, pigments and fiber materials concentration with a different stalk position and grade of korean leaf tobaccos. Eight kinds of flue-cured leaf tobaccos which were different stalk position and grade were used for this study. Three kinds of major organic acids(citric, malic and oxalic), 2 kinds of polyphenols(chlorogenic acid and rutin), 3 kinds of pigments($\beta$-carotene, chlorophyll-a and chlorophyll-b), and 2 kinds of fiber components(pectin and lignin) were analyzed. All of these chemical components were changed with a different stalk position. When the citric acid, malic acid, $\beta-carotene$, chlorophyll-a, and lignin concentration were low in the middle stalk position and high in both bottom and upper position, oxalic acid and chlorogenic acid show the highest concentration in the middle stalk position. All of these chemical components also changed with a different grade of leaf tobaccos. As the citric acid, malic acid, $\beta-carotene$, chlorophyll-b, and lignin concentration decreased as the grade ascended, the oxalic acid and chlorogenic acid concentration increased as the grade ascended. This results assumed that the quality of korean leaf tobacco was directly proportional to oxalic acid and chlorogenic acid concentration but it was inversely proportional to citric acid, malic acid, $\beta-carotene$, chlorophyll-b and lignin concentration.
Chlorophyll-a and its degradation products (pheopigment) contained in the sediment were determined to evaluate the eutrophication status in the downstream of Nakdong River. The chlorophyll-a and pheopigment concentrations of sediment ranged 11-646 mg $\mu \textrm m^{-2}$ (mean 172 mg $\mu \textrm m^{-2}$) and 48-1,564 mg $\mu \textrm m^{-2}$ (mean 454 mg $\mu \textrm m^{-2}$) over 11 sampling stations of the Nakdong River. The chloropigment concentrations in this local area were higher than other values reported previously and this river waters showed hypertrophic status in view of sedimentary chloropigment. Total chloropigment standing crops of sediment, which are the residuals after the longterm degradation, were 2.2-3.6 fold higher than chlorophyll-$\alpha$ contents of overlying water. The amounts of chloropigments of sediment suggest a large contribution of phytoplankton to the sediment. While chloropigment standing crops are evaluated with organic-C and nitrogen contents, the algal contribution to the carbon and nitrogen pool of the sediment were estimated to be approximately 30% and 40%, respectively.

This was aim to study the changes of components by different parts and maturity of tomato. Tomato include the green pigment chlorophyll, the yellow pigment-carotene. the red pigment lycopene and the other component. These colors of tomatoes are reported to have important functional roles to promote health in human. The main objective of this study was to define changes in the content of the four tomato maturation that is ascorbic acid, chlorophyll, carotene, lycopene. A ascorbic acid contents of tomato fruits was the highest at 50th day. Chlorophyll contents of tomatoes fruits was the highest at 10th days after flowering. ${\alpha}$-carotene contained low-quantity while all growth period. ${\beta}$-carotene contained the highest at 50th days after flowering, $1036.97{\mu}g$. Lycopene contained the highest at 50th days after flowering, $5800{\mu}g$.
A comparison was made between chlorophyll a from OSMI and SeaWiFS determined with the standard method during the NFRDI's research cruises. The simple algorithm for calibrating and validating of OSMI chlorophyll a as level 2 data in the East China Sea in specially winter season was made by relationship between the estimated chlorophyll a and the measured chlorophyll a in the field. We compared the distributions of OSMI chlorophyll a, sea surface temperature and zooplankton biomass, catch amounts of the Pacific mackerel in the East China Sea.
