  • In the present study, a numerical and experimental investigation has been carried out on the seismic behavior of RC columns of a bridge which damaged under corrosive environments and retrofitted by various techniques including combined application of CFRP sheets and steel profiles. A novel hybrid retrofitting procedure, including the application of inner steel profiles and outer peripheral CFRP sheets, has been proposed for strengthening purpose. Seven large-scale RC columns of a Girder Bridge have been tested in the laboratory under the influence of simultaneous application of constant axial load and the lateral cyclic displacements. Having verified the finite element modeling, using ABAQUS software, the effects of important parameters such as the corrosion percentage of steel rebars and the number of CFRP layers have been evaluated. Based on the results, retrofitting of RC columns of the bridge with the proposed technique was effective in improving some measures of structural performance such as lateral strength degradation and higher energy absorption capability. However, the displacement ductility was not considerably improved whereas the elastic stiffness of the specimens has been increased.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the inter-laminar fracture toughness characteristics of CFRP pultrusion spar cap materials reinforced with non-woven glass fabric. Test specimens were fabricated by the infusion technique. A non-woven glass fabric and artificial defects were embedded on the middle surface between two pultruded CFRP panels. Double cantilever beam (DCB) and End Notched Flexure (ENF) tests were performed according to ASTM standards. Fracture toughness and crack propagation characteristics were evaluated with load-displacement curves and delamination resistance curves (R-Curve). The fracture toughness results were calculated by compliance calibration (CC) method. The initiation and propagation values of Mode-I critical strain energy release rate value GIc were 1.357 kJ/m2 and 1.397 kJ/m2, respectively, and Mode-II critical strain energy release rate values GIIc were 4.053 kJ/m2 for non-precracked test and 4.547 kJ/m2 for precracked test. It was found that the fracture toughness properties of the CFRP pultrusion spar-cap are influenced by the interface between the layers of CFRP and glass fiber non-woven.

  • Due to higher stiffness to weight, higher corrosion resistance, higher strength to weight ratios and good durability, concrete composite structures provide many advantages as compared with conventional materials. Thus, they have wide applications in the field of concrete construction. This research focuses on the structural behavior of steel-tube CFRP confined concrete (STCCC) columns under axial concentric loading. A nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA) model of STCCC columns was simulated using ABAQUS which was then, calibrated for different material and geometric models of concrete, steel tube and CFRP material using the experimental results from the literature. The comparative study of the NLFEA predictions and the experimental results indicated that the proposed constitutive NLFEA model can accurately predict the structural performance of STCCC columns. After the calibration of NLFEA model, an extensive parametric study was performed to examine the effects of different critical parameters of composite columns such as; (i) unconfined concrete strength, (ii) number of CFRP layers, (iii) thickness of steel tube and (iv) concrete core diameter, on the axial load capacity. Furthermore, a large database of axial strength of 700 confined concrete compression members was developed from the previous researches to give an analytical model that predicts the ultimate axial strength of composite columns accurately. The comparison of the predictions of the proposed analytical model was done with the predictions of 216 NLFEA models from the parametric study. A close agreement was represented by the predictions of the proposed constitutive NLFEA model and the analytical model.

  • Openings in slabs are usually required for many different applications such as aeriation ducts and air conditioning. Opening in concrete slabs due to cutouts significantly decrease the member stiffness. There are different techniques to strengthen slabs with opening cutouts. This study presents experimental and numerical investigations on the use of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) as strengthening material to strengthen and restore the load carrying capacity of R.C. slabs after having cutout in the hogging moment region. The experimental program consisted of testing five (oneway spanning R.C. flat slabs) with overhang. All slabs were prismatic, rectangular in cross-section and nominally 2000 mm long, 1000 mm width, and 100 mm thickness with a clear span (distance between supports) of 1200 mm and the overhang length is 700 mm. All slabs were loaded up to 30 kN (45% of ultimate load for reference slab, before yielding of the longitudinal reinforcement), then the load was kept constant during cutting concrete and steel bars (producing cut out). After that operation, slabs were loaded till failure. An analytical study using finite element analysis (FEA) is performed using the commercial software ANSYS. The FEA has been validated and calibrated using the experimental results. The FE model was found to be in a good agreement with the experimental results. The investigated key parameters were slab aspect ratio for the opening ratios of [1:1, 2:1], CFRP layers and the laminates widths, positions for cutouts and the CFRP configurations around cutouts.

  • Fiber-reinforced composites are extensively used in electronic, ship and aerospace applications due to their high strength and high toughess. In these applications, they are often subjected to localized heat damage due to various sources. In order to ensure their reliability, it is important to predict their residual properties using nondestructive evaluation thchniques. Fabric fiber composite specimens were manufactured with six layers of the glass-fiber prepreg and the carbon-fiber prepreg, respectively. The specimens were subjected to a localized heat damage using a heated copper tip with a diameter of 10mm at 35$0^{\circ}C$(CFRP) and 30$0^{\circ}C$(GFRP), respectively. The specimens were then subjected to tension tests while acoustic emission (AE) activities of specimens were collected. The AE activity of all specimens showed three types of distinct frequency regions. Those are matrix cracking, failure of the fiber/matrix interface and fiber breakage.

  • Analytical and experimental investigation on dynamic properties of extra lightweight concrete sandwich beams reinforced with various lay ups of carbon reinforced epoxy polymer composites (CFRP) are discussed. The lightweight concrete used in the core of the sandwich beams was made up of extra lightweight aggregate, Lica. The density of concrete was half of that of the ordinary concrete and its compressive strength was about $100Kg/cm^2$. Two extra lightweight unreinforced (control) beams and six extra lightweight sandwich beams with various lay ups of CFRP were clamped in one end and tested under an impact load. The dimension of the beams without considering any reinforcement was 20 cm ${\times}$ 10 cm ${\times}$ 1.4 m. These were selected to ensure that the effect of shear during the bending test would be minimized. Three other beams, made up of ordinary concrete reinforced with steel bars, were tested in the same conditions. For measuring the damping capacity of sandwich beams three methods, Logarithmic Decrement Analysis (LDA), Hilbert Transform Analysis (HTA) and Moving Block Analysis (MBA) were applied. The first two methods are in time domain and the last one is in frequency domain. A comparison between the damping capacity of the beams obtained from all three methods, shows that the damping capacity of the extra lightweight concrete decreases by adding the composite reinforced layers to the upper and lower sides of the beams, and becomes most similar to the damping of the ordinary beams. Also the results show that the stiffness of the extra lightweight concrete beams increases by adding the composite reinforced layer to their both sides and become similar to the ordinary beams.

  • The p-version nonlinear finite element model has been developed to analyze the nonlinear behavior of simply supported RC slabs strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced plastic sheets. The shape function is adopted with integral of Legendre polynomials. The compression model of concrete is based on the Kupfer's yield criterion, hardening rule, and crushing condition. The cracking behavior is modeled by a smeared crack model. In this study, the fixed crack approach is adopted as being geometrically fixed in direction once generated. Each steel layer has a uniaxial behavior resisting only the axial force in the bar direction. Identical behavior is assumed fur tension and compression of steel according to the elastic modulus. The carbon fiber reinforced plastic sheets are considered as reinforced layers of equivalent thickness with uniaxial strength and rigidity properties in the present model. It is shown that the proposed model is able to adequately predicte the displacement and ultimate load of nonlinear simply supported RC slabs by a patch with respect to reinforcement ratio, thickness and angles of CFRP sheets.

  • In recent decades, the majority of studies have concentrated on the utilization of Steel Square Hollow Section (SHS) columns, with minimal attention given to reinforcing columns exhibiting inherent defects. This study addresses this gap by introducing initial vertical and horizontal defects at three distinct locations (top, middle, and bottom) and employing Carbon-FRP for reinforcement. The research investigates the dimensional and positional impacts of these defects on the axial behavior of SHS columns. A total of 29 samples, comprising 17 with defects, 11 strengthened, and 1 defect-free control, underwent examination. The study employed ABAQUS modeling and conducted experimental testing. Results revealed that defects located at different positions significantly diminished the load-bearing capacity and initial performance of the steel columns. Axial loading induced local buckling and lateral rupture, particularly at the defect side, in short columns. Notably, horizontal (across the column's width) and vertical (along the column's height) defects in the middle led to the most substantial reduction in strength and load-bearing capacity. The axial compressive failure increased with the length-to-width ratio of the defect. Moreover, the application of four carbon fiber layers to strengthen the steel columns resulted in increased Energy Dissipation and a delayed onset of local buckling in the face of axial ruptures.
