A Study on Learning Model of Constructivism for CAAD Education (CAAD교육의 구성주의 학습모델 개념에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to investigate how to apply the theory of constructivism to CADD education. To maximize educational effect in the educational process, evaluation, media, interactions between instructor and learners, existing CADD education has some limitations and needs new methodology. Constructivism can be said to be a learner-oriented theory in that it emphasizes on the process of understanding in each individual. It can contribute in educational practice to elicit each learner's motivation and to develope their creativity. This paper tried to investigate how to apply constructivism to architectural designing and find the most suitable CAAD education methodology related to design studio.

  • The use of computers in architectural professions has grown with the power of easy data management, increased sophistication of standalone applications, inexpensive hardware, improved speed of processing, use of standard library and tools for communication and collaboration. Recently, there has been a growing interest in distributed CAAD (Computer-Aided Architectural Design) integration due to the needs of direct collaboration among project participants in different locations, and Internet is becoming the optimal tool for collaboration among participants in architectural design and construction projects. The aim of this research is to provide a new paradigm for a CAAD system by combining research on integrated CAAD applications with recent collaboration technologies. To accomplish this research objective, interactive three-dimensional (3D) design tools and applications running on the Web have been developed for an Internet-based distributed CAAD application system, specifically designed to meet the requirements of the architectural design process. To this end, two different scopes of implementation are evaluated: first, global architecture and the functionality of a distributed CAAD system; and, second, the association of an architectural application to the system.

  • Integrating computer-aided design with computer-aided fabrication and construction will fundamentally redefine the relationship between design and construction. Rapid prototyping(RP) is evaluated as one of the integration method available but it has been regarded as very expensive and complex design evaluation tool and is only suitable for large mechanical design shops in automobile and aerospace industry. However current status of rapid prototyping is changing since the new generation of RP equipment, less expensive and more user-friendlier, now can be installed and use in design firms. Simultaneously increasing use of 3D CAAD software is also helping to use rapid prototyping widely. It is crucial to acknowledge rapid prototyping technologies are not only for avant-garde architect such as Frank O. Gehry but ordinary 90% architects, who can have benefit from fast and cost-effective technology. With its fast development and adaptation in architectural industry, it is quite necessary to include rapid prototyping education in regular CAAD courses either undergraduate or graduate level.

A Comparative Study on the Effects of BIM and Conventional 3D Modeler on the Idea Generation in Architectural Design Process (건축설계과정에서 BIM 및 3차원 모델러 사용에 따른 아이디어 발상효과에 관한 비교연구)

  • While BIM software becomes popular for CAAD and architectural design educations, the affordance of BIM for students' architectural idea developments, called intra-process of communication, is still unknown. Therefore, this study conducted t-test quantitative analysis in order to the scores for feedback, idea productivity, idea development for architectural elements(form, interior space, material, and details), and creative motivation(novelty, appropriateness) using BIM and non-BIM 3D modeler. To achieve the goal, in authentic CAAD class, architecture major students proposed two office designs using those two tools, then they evaluated in which ways those tools influenced their idea developments.

  • 비트루비우스(Vitruvius)에서 벤츄리(Venturi)에 이르기까지 많은 건축사가(建榮史家) 또는 건축가(建築家)들이 건축원리에 대한 각자의 규범적 태도를 글로써 밝혀왔다. 이러한 규범적 내용 중 비례이론은 서양건축에 있어 건축미(建築美) 비밀로 간주되어, 조화로운 건축물이 꼭 갖추어야 할 덕목중의 하나로 인식되었다. 현대건축에서 비교적 근대 비례시스템이라 불릴 수 있는 것으로 르 꼬르뷔지에의 모될로르와 반 데어 란의 플라스틱 넘버를 들 수 있다. 모될로르는 현재까지 아주 제한된 성공밖에 거두지 못했는데, 이는 피보나치 수열에 기초한 수치들이 커졌을 때 단위의 배수관계가 거의 형성되지 않는다는 사실에 기인한다. 반면에 플라스틱 넘버는 모될로르의 결점들을 보완할 수 있는 매력적인 수열을 가지고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 반 데어 란의 비례시스템 분석을 통하여 유도된 수열규칙이 건축디자인과 관련되어 직접적으로 적용되어 질 수 있는 CAAD시스템을 제안한다. 본 시스템의 초점은 반 데어 란의 비례이론이 어떻게 컴퓨터 언어로 변환 및 CAAD시스템에 적용되어, 실질적인 건축 실무행위에 있어 컴퓨터가 디자인 도우미로서 역할을 수행할 수 있겠는가하는 것이다. 연구의 결과, 사용자는 이러한 시스템을 사용함으로써 반 데어 란의 비례시스템을 자신의 디자인에 손쉽게 적용할 수 있으며, 이는 복잡한 치수관계로 구성된 비례시스템의 건축실무 활용으로 발전되어질 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

Digital Modelling of Visual Perception in Architectural Environment

  • To be the design method supporting aesthetic ability of human, CAAD system should essentially recognize architectural form in the same way of human. In this study, visual perception process of human was analyzed to search proper computational method performing similar step of perception of it. Through the analysis of visual perception, vision was separated to low-level vision and high-level vision. Edge detection and neural network were selected to model after low-level vision and high-level vision. The 24 images of building, tree and landscape were processed by edge detection and trained by neural network. And 24 new images were used to test trained network. The test shows that trained network gives right perception result toward each images with low error rate. This study is on the meaning of artificial intelligence in design process rather than on the design automation strategy through artificial intelligence.

A Study on the Student Surveys for CAAD(Computer Aided Architectural Design) (건축 CAD 과목에 대한 학생 설문평가에 관한 연구)

  • The importance of the digital architecture is increasing more ever. Currently, CAD and 3D programs are used as design fields, but the BIM (building information modeling) is gradually interested. BIM is mandatory on the project more than 50 billion won ordered by the government since 2012, it will be expanded to a total of government orders by 2016. University needs to evaluate teaching methods and computer-aided design environments such as CAD and BIM. In this paper, we surveyed computer-aided design environments and teaching methods for 73 students at the J University of Department of architectural engineering. Main results are as follows: 1. Hardlock is uncomfortable but necessary program for the computer management. 2. The desk placement considering the behavior of the design students results in higher satisfaction. 3. Because a CAD subject was a difficult course content and progress is fast, students thought it is difficult to follow. Especially, first-year students answered it is difficult to learn program and understand the structure of the building at the same time. 4. First-year students want to learn CAD more. Second-, third-, fourth-year students want to learn Photoshop more. Supplement for these classes is required. 5. Students answered that a teaching method of a CAD subject would be good to their own practice after the professor demonstrates for students. The senior's assistance is also a high effective way in the class. 6. During class, students' activities such surfing the web and Kakao Talk on a smartphone disrupt the class, there is a need to regulate by a rule such as disconnect computers from a network and against using smartphone. Although the Internet with the popularization of smartphones confers a benefit on modern life, it causes damage to us. This is a hard part for a salaried workers as well as students studying equally. The self management is required and a professor needs to control and restraint in a university classroom. The professor's continuing interest to students can increase the effectiveness of learning.

  • Thinking methods have been widely recognized as phenomenon of problem solving in architectural design process and as one of the bases of creativity. In recent years the study of thinking methods have become a major focus of design research. And the purpose of the paper will understand the phenomenon of characteristic and classification of thinking methods in the architectural design process. Extensive protocols are recorded. In particular, the protocols contain sufficient information to make a detailed picture of the architect's problem-solving processes. A protocol study is reported in which the experimental data by architect's is analyzed through the visual protocol analysis method. These findings will help understand the architectural design nature. And they supply a direction for creative education for architects and the base for CAAD system development through understanding for architect's thinking methods.

  • We introduce a scheme with a maximized efficiency of detecting atoms passing through an optical standing-wave mode cavity. Consider a standing-wave optical cavity illuminated by a weak probe beam through one of its mirrors where the transmission through the other mirror is monitored by a photodetector. If an atom is put in the cavity, the atom-cavity coupling shifts the resonance frequency of the system via the so-called normal mode splitting, and thereby the transmission power will drop. In fact, this type of atom detection scheme has been used in recent single atom trap experiments In practice, however, the field in a standing-wave mode will have a geometrical structure having nodes and antinodes that when the atom traverses the cavity through one of the nodes, there will be no such effect of atom-field interaction.   • The planning and design of healthcare architecture generally requires the participation and consultation of skilled experts since it has more complex space program than any other buildings. Therefore, the computer-based expert systems for the planning of healthcare architecture have been tried continuously. The recent development of BIM technologies and object-oriented CAAD systems is leading these attempts to realize gradually. Thus, this study attempts to verify whether the new evaluation model and system of the spatial layout, which are based on the validation of space program that developed in earlier studies, are applicable to real examples of design competition. Through this simulation, this study tries to find the possibility of expert systems for the planning of healthcare architecture and act as basic data for the development of new system for the integrated design environment based on BIM technologies in the near future.
