  • Single crystals of fully dehydrated and fully $Ca^{2+}$-exchanged zeolites A (|$Ca_6$|[$Si_{12}Al_{12}O_{48}$]-LTA) and X (|$Ca_{46}$| [$Si_{100}Al_{92}O_{384}$]-FAU) were brought into contact with Te in fine pyrex capillaries at 623 K and 673 K, respectively, for 5 days. Crystal structures of Te-sorbed $Ca^{2+}$-exchanged zeolites A and X have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques at 294 K in the cubic space group Pm$\overline{3}$ m (a = 12.288(2) $\AA$) and Fd $\overline{3}$ (a = 25.012(1) $\AA$), respectively. The crystal structures of pale red-brown |$Ca_6Te_3$|[$Si_{12}Al_{12}O_{48}$]-LTA and black coloured |$Ca_{46}Te_8$| [$Si_{100}Al_{92}O_{384}$]-FAU have been refined to the final error indices of $R_1/wR_2\;=\;0.1096/0.2768\;and\;R_1/wR_2$ = 0.1054/ 0.2979 with 204 and 282 reflections for which $F_o\;>\;4{\sigma}(F_o)$, respectively. In the structure of |Ca6Te3|[$Si_{12}Al_{12}O_{48}$]- LTA, 6 $Ca^{2+}$ ions per unit cell were found at one crystallographic positions, on 3-fold axes equipoints of opposite 6-rings. In |$Ca_{46}Te_8$|[$Si_{100}Al_{92}O_{384}$]-FAU, 46 $Ca^{2+}$ ions per unit cell were found at four crystallographically distinct positions: 3 $Ca^{2+}$ ions at Ca(1) fill the 16 equivalent positions of site I, 21 $Ca^{2+}$ ions at Ca(2) fill the 32 equivalent positions of site I’, 10 and 12 $Ca^{2+}$ ions at Ca(3) and Ca(4), respectively, fill the 32 equivalent positions of site II. The Te clusters are stabilized by interaction with cations and framework oxygen. In sodalite units, Te-Te distances of 2.86(10) and 2.69(4) $\AA$ in zeolites A and X, respectively exhibited strong covalent properties due to their interaction with $Ca^{2+}$ ions. On the other hand, in large cavity and supercage, those of 2.99(3) and 2.76(11) $\AA$ in zeolites A and X, respectively, showed ionic properties because alternative ionic interaction was formed through framework oxygen at one end and $Ca^{2+}$ cations at the other end.

  • $xCa(Li_{1/4}Nb_{3/4})O_{3}-(1-x)CaTiO_{3}$ ceramics were sintered under the presence of zinc-borosilicate(ZBS) glass and resultant microwave dielectric properties were investigated with a view to applying the composition to low-temperature co-fired ceramic(LTCC) technology. The addition of $5{\sim}15wt%$ ZBS glass ensured successful sintering below $900\;^{\circ}C$. In general, increased addition of ZBS glass increased sinterability but it decreased the quality factor($Q{\times}f_{0}$) significantly due to the formation of an excessive liquid and second phases. As for the addition of $CaTiO_3$, the dielectric constant(${\epsilon}_r$) and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency(${\tau}_f$) increased, while the quality factor($Q{\times}f_{0}$) did not show an apparent change. The sintered $0.9Ca(Li_{1/4}Nb_{3/4})O_{3}-0.1CaTiO_{3}$ specimen at $900\;^{\circ}C$ with 10 wt% ZBS glass demonstrated 39.6 in dielectric constant(${\epsilon}_r$), 4,400 in quality factor$(Q{\times}f_{0}),\;and\;-11ppm/^{\circ}C$ in temperature coefficient of resonant frequency(${\tau}_f$).

  • Calcium entry through $Ca_v3.2Ca^{2+}$ channels plays essential roles for various physiological events including thalamic oscillation, muscle contraction, hormone secretion, and sperm acrosomal reaction. In this study, we examined how protein tyrosine phosphatases or protein tyrosine kinases affect $Ca_v3.2Ca^{2+}$ channels reconstituted in Xenopus oocytes. We found that $Ca_v3.2$ channel activity was reduced by 25% in response to phenylarsine oxide (tyrosine phosphatase inhibitor), whereas it was augmented by 19% in response to Tyr A47 or herbimycin A (tyrosine kinase inhibitors). However, other biophysical properties of $Ca_v3.2$ currents were not significantly changed by the drugs. These results imply that $Ca_v3.2$ channel activity is capable of being increased by activation of tyrosine phosphatases, but is decreased by activation of tyrosine kinases.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of various calcium salts on the accumulation of calcium in apple fruits when sprayed on whole tree. Differences in the total calcium contents of fruits were found between calcium sources and cultivars. In 'Tsugaru' , calcium nitrate, calcium chloride, and calcium carbonate were all effective but only calcium chloride and calcium carbonate appeared to be effective in 'Fuji' . Major parts of the applied calcium were accumulated in the feel and outer flesh. Ethylene evolution of fruit was retarded during storage with the increase of total calcium content in 'Fuji' fruit treated calcium acetate.

  • Flavonoids have an ability to suppress various ion channels. We determined whether one of flavonoids, cyanidin-3-glucoside, affects adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP)-induced calcium signaling using digital imaging methods for intracellular free $Ca^{2+}$ concentration ([$Ca^{2+}$]i), reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mitochondrial membrane potential in PC12 cells. Treatment with ATP ($100{\mu}M$) for 90 sec induced [$Ca^{2+}$]i increases in PC12 cells. Pretreatment with cyanidin-3-glucoside ($1{\mu}g/ml$ to $100{\mu}g/ml$) for 30 min inhibited the ATP-induced [$Ca^{2+}$]i increases in a concentration-dependent manner ($IC_{50}=15.3{\mu}g/ml$). Pretreatment with cyanidin-3-glucoside ($15{\mu}g/ml$) for 30 min significantly inhibited the ATP-induced [$Ca^{2+}$]i responses following removal of extracellular $Ca^{2+}$ or depletion of intracellular [$Ca^{2+}$]i stores. Cyanidin-3-glucoside also significantly inhibited the relatively specific P2X2 receptor agonist 2-MeSATP-induced [$Ca^{2+}$]i responses. Cyanidin-3-glucoside significantly inhibited the thapsigargin or ATP-induced store-operated calcium entry. Cyanidin-3-glucoside significantly inhibited the ATP-induced [$Ca^{2+}$]i responses in the presence of nimodipine and ${\omega}$-conotoxin. Cyanidin-3-glucoside also significantly inhibited KCl (50 mM)-induced [$Ca^{2+}$]i increases. Cyanidin-3-glucoside significantly inhibited ATP-induced mitochondrial depolarization. The intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ chelator BAPTA-AM or the mitochondrial $Ca^{2+}$ uniporter inhibitor RU360 blocked the ATP-induced mitochondrial depolarization in the presence of cyanidin-3-glucoside. Cyanidin-3-glucoside blocked ATP-induced formation of ROS. BAPTA-AM further decreased the formation of ROS in the presence of cyanidin-3-glucoside. All these results suggest that cyanidin-3-glucoside inhibits ATP-induced calcium signaling in PC12 cells by inhibiting multiple pathways which are the influx of extracellular $Ca^{2+}$ through the nimodipine and ${\omega}$-conotoxin-sensitive and -insensitive pathways and the release of $Ca^{2+}$ from intracellular stores. In addition, cyanidin-3-glucoside inhibits ATP-induced formation of ROS by inhibiting $Ca^{2+}$-induced mitochondrial depolarization.

  • In order to use alunite as an activator of blast furnace slag, we studied the hydration characteristics of the calcined alunite and the ground blast furnace slag. The alunite calcined at $650{\cire}C$ consists of KAl($KAl(SO_{4})_{2}$ and $Al_{2}O_{3}$. The calcined alunite reacts with $Ca(OH)_{2}$ and gypsum to form etrringite ($3CaO{\cdot}Al_{2}O_{3}{\cdot}3CaSO_{4}{\cdot}32H_{2}O$) as fellows:$2KAl(SO_{4})_{2}+2Al_{2}O_{3}+13Ca(OH)_{2}+5CaSO_{4}{\cdot}2H_{2}O+73H_{2}O{\rightarrow}3(3CaO{\cdot}Al_{2}O_{3}{\cdot}3CaSO_{4}{\cdot}32H_{2}O)+2KOH$. The $SO_{4}^{2-}$ ions from calcined alunite reacts with CaO in blast furnace slag to from gypsum, which reacts with CaO and $Al_{2}O_{3}$ to from ettringite in calcined alunite-blast furnace slag system. Therefore blast furnace slag can be activated by calcined alunite.

  • Role of Ca in grain growth behavior has been investigated in hot-rolled Al-3%Mg and Al-3%Mg-0.5%Ca wrought alloys. When annealed for 1 hr from 723 to 823 K, grain size of the Al-3%Mg alloy increased rapidly above 723 K, whereas grains were relatively stable up to 773 K for the Ca-containing alloy. Grain homogeneity of the Ca-containing alloy was better than that of the Ca-free alloy both in hot-rolled and annealed states. Calculated activation energies for grain growth were 77.6 and 85.9 kJ/mole in the range of 723 to 823 K for the alloys with 0 and 0.5%Ca, respectively. Taking SEM images and EDS results into account, enhanced thermal stability in response to Ca addition would be associated with Al4Ca compounds located along the grain boundaries, which eventually play a role in restricting grain growth at elevated temperatures.

  • Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors ($InsP_3Rs$) modulate $Ca^{2+}$ release from intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ store and are extensively expressed in the membrane of endoplasmic/sarcoplasmic reticulum and Golgi. Although caffeine and 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate (2-APB) have been widely used to block $InsP_3Rs$, the use of these is limited due to their multiple actions. In the present study, we examined and compared the ability of caffeine and 2-APB as a blocker of $Ca^{2+}$ release from intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ stores and $Ca^{2+}$ entry through store-operated $Ca^{2+}$ (SOC) channel in the mouse pancreatic acinar cell. Caffeine did not block the $Ca^{2+}$ entry, but significantly inhibited carbamylcholine (CCh)-induced $Ca^{2+}$ release. In contrast, 2-APB did not block CCh-induced $Ca^{2+}$ release, but remarkably blocked SOC-mediated $Ca^{2+}$ entry at lower concentrations. In permeabilized acinar cell, caffeine had an inhibitory effect on InsP3-induced $Ca^{2+}$ release, but 2-APB at lower concentration, which effectively blocked $Ca^{2+}$ entry, had no inhibitory action. At higher concentrations, 2-APB has multiple paradoxical effects including inhibition of Ins$P_3$-induced $Ca^{2+}$ release and direct stimulation of $Ca^{2+}$ release. Based on the results, we concluded that caffeine is useful as an inhibitor of $InsP_3R$, and 2-APB at lower concentration is considered a blocker of $Ca^{2+}$ entry through SOC channels in the pancreatic acinar cell.

  • Since cellular automata(CA) is superior to LFSR in randomness, it is applied as an alternative of LFSR in various fields. However, constructing CA corresponding to a given polynomial is more difficult than LFSR. Cattell et al. and Cho et al. showed that irreducible polynomials are CA-polynomials. And Cho et al. and Sabater et al. gave a synthesis method of 90/150 CA corresponding to the power of an irreducible polynomial, which is applicable as a shrinking generator. Swan characterizes the parity of the number of irreducible factors of a trinomial over the finite field GF(2). These polynomials are of practical importance when implementing finite field extensions. In this paper, we show that the trinomial $x^{2^n-1}+X+1$ ($n{\geq}2$) are CA-polynomials. Also the trinomial $x^{2^a(2^n-1)}+x^{2^a}+1$ ($n{\geq}2$, $a{\geq}0$) are CA-polynomials.

  • We previously demonstrated the ability of ginseng saponins (active ingredients of Panax ginseng) to enhance $Ca^{2+}$-activated $Cl^{-}$ current. The mechanism for this ginseng saponin-induced enhancement was proposed to be the release of $Ca^{2+}$ from $IP_{3}-sensitive$ intracellular stores through the activation of PTX-insensitive $G\alpha_{q/11}$ proteins and PLC pathway. Recent studies have shown that calmodulin (CaM) regulates $IP_{3}$ receptor-mediated $Ca^{2+}$ release in both $Ca^{2+}-dependent$ and -independent manner. In the present study, we have investigated the effects of CaM on ginseng saponin-induced $Ca^{2+}$-activated $Cl^{-}$ current responses in Xenopus oocytes. Intraoocyte injection of CaM inhibited ginseng saponin-induced $Ca^{2+}$-activated $Cl^{-}$ current enhancement, whereas co-injection of calmidazolium, a CaM antagonist, with CaM blocked CaM action. The inhibitory effect of CaM on ginseng saponin-induced $Ca^{2+}$-activated $Cl^{-}$ current enhancement was dose- and time-dependent, with an $IC_{50} of 14.9\pm3.5 {\mu}M$. The inhibitory effect of CaM on saponin's activity was maximal after 6 h of intraoocyte injection of CaM, and after 48 h the activity of saponin recovered to control level. The half-recovery time was calculated to be $16.7\pm4.3 h$. Intraoocyte injection of CaM inhibited $Ca^{2+}$-induced $Ca^{2+}$-activated $Cl^{-}$ current enhancement and also attenuated $IP_{3}$-induced $Ca^{2+}$-activated $Cl^{-}$ current enhancement. $Ca^{2+}$/CaM kinase II inhibitor did not inhibit CaM-caused attenuation of ginseng saponin-induced $Ca^{2+}$-activated $Cl^{-}$ current enhancement. These results suggest that CaM regulates ginseng saponin effect on $Ca^{2+}$-activated $Cl^{-}$ current enhancement via $Ca^{2+}$-independent manner.
