  • The composites were fabricated by adding 0, 15, 20, 25[vol.%] Zirconium Diboride(hereafter, $ZrB_2$) powders as a second phase to Silicon Carbide(hereafter, SiC) matrix. The physical, mechanical and electrical properties of electroconductive SiC ceramic composites by Spark Plasma Sintering(hereafter, SPS) were examined. Reactions between ${\beta}-SiC$ and $ZrB_2$ were not observed in the XRD analysis. The relative density of mono SiC, SiC+15[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+20[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ and SiC+25[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composites are 90.93[%], 74.62[%], 74.99[%] and 72.61[%], respectively. The XRD phase analysis of the electroconductive SiC ceramic composites reveals high of SiC and $ZrB_2$ and low of $ZrO_2$ phase. The lowest flexural strength, 108.79[MPa], shown in SiC+15[vol.%] $ZrB_2$ composite and the highest - 220.15[MPa] - in SiC+20[vol.%] $ZrB_2$composite at room temperature. The trend of the mechanical properties of the electroconductive SiC ceramic composites moves in accord with that of the relative density. The electrical resistivities of mono SiC, SiC+15[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, SiC+20[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ and SiC+25[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composites are 4.57${\times}10^{-1}$, 2.13${\times}10^{-1}$, 1.53${\times}10^{-1}$ and 6.37${\times}10^{-2}$[${\Omega}$ cm] at room temperature, respectively. The electrical resistivity of mono SiC, SiC+15[vol.%]$ZrB_2$. SiC+20[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ and SiC+25[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ are Negative Temperature Coefficient Resistance(hereafter, NTCR) in temperature ranges from 25[$^{\circ}C$] to 100[$^{\circ}C$]. The declination of V-I characteristics of SiC+20[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composite is 3.72${\times}10^{-1}$. It is convinced that SiC+20[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composite by SPS can be applied for heater or electrode above 1000[$^{\circ}C$]

  • The SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites were fabricated by combining 30, 35, 40 and 45vol.% of Zirconium Diboride (hereafter, $ZrB_2$) powders with Silicon Carbide (hereafter, SiC) matrix. The SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites, the sintered compacts, were produced through Spark Plasma Sintering (hereafter, SPS), and its physical, electrical, and mechanical properties were examined. Also, the thermal image analysis of the SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites was examined. Reactions between $\beta$-SiC and $ZrB_2$ were not observed via X-Ray Diffractometer (hereafter, XRD) analysis. The relative density of the SiC+30vol.%$ZrB_2$, SiC+35vol.%$ZrB_2$, SiC+40vol.%$ZrB_2$, and SiC+45vol.%$ZrB_2$ composites were 88.64%, 76.80%, 79.09% and 88.12%, respectively. The XRD phase analysis of the sintered compacts demonstrated high phase of SiC and $ZrB_2$ but low phase of $ZrO_2$. Among the SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites, the SiC+35vol.%$ZrB_2$ composite had the lowest flexural strength, 148.49MPa, and the SiC+40vol.%$ZrB_2$ composite had the highest flexural strength, 204.85MPa, at room temperature. The electrical resistivities of the SiC+30vol.%$ZrB_2$, SiC+35vol.%$ZrB_2$, SiC+40vol.%$ZrB_2$ and SiC+45vol.%$ZrB_2$ composites were $6.74\times10^{-4}$, $4.56\times10^{-3}$, $1.92\times10^{-3}$, and $4.95\times10^{-3}\Omega{\cdot}cm$ at room temperature, respectively. The electrical resistivities of the SiC+30vol.%$ZrB_2$, SiC+35vol.%$ZrB_2$ SiC+40vol.%$ZrB_2$ and SiC+45[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composites had Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistance (hereafter, PTCR) in the temperature range from $25^{\circ}C$ to $500^{\circ}C$. The V-I characteristics of the SiC+40vol.%$ZrB_2$ composite had a linear shape. Therefore, it is considered that the SiC+40vol.%$ZrB_2$ composite containing the most outstanding mechanical properties, high resistance temperature coefficient and PTCR characteristics among the sintered compacts can be used as an energy friendly ceramic heater or electrode material through SPS.

  • Mullite ceramics can be sintered by rf plasma sintering to densities as high as 97% compared to the theoretical density of the mullite, while SiC whisker-reinforced mullite matrix ceramic composites were not sintered by plasma sintering. Decomposition of mullite occurs in a superficial regins at the outside surface of the specimen by volatilization of SiO at elevated temperature by plasma. SiC whiskers were destroyed, and the matrix was converted to alumina from SiC-whisker reinforced mullite matrix ceramic composites during the plasma sintering. Accelerated volatilization from the SiC whisker in the mullite prevents sintering. The volatile species are mainly SiC and CO gas species. The effects of plasma on mullite and SiC-whisker reinforced mullite matrix composites are interpreted by thermodynamic simulation of the volatile species in the plasma environment. The thermodynamic results show that the decomposition will not occur during hot pressing.

  • The mechanical and electrical properties of the hot-pressed and pressureless annealed SiC-39vo1.%TiB$_2$electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated as functions of the liquid additives of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ and the sintering temperature. The result of phase analysis for the SiC-39vo1.%TiB$_2$ composites by XRD revealed $\alpha -SiC(6H),\; TiB_2,\; and YAG(Al_5Y_3O_{12})$ crystal phase. The relative density of SiC-39vo1.% $TiB_2$ composites was increased with increased $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ contents. The fracture toughness showed the highest value of $7.8 MPa.m_{1/2}$ for composites added with 12 wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$additives at $1750^{\circk}C$. The electrical resistivity of the SiC-39vo1.%$TiB_2$composites was all positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR) in the temperature range of $25S^{\circ}C \;to\; 700^{\circ}C$.

  • The fabrication methods and requirements of the fiber, interphase, and matrix of nuclear grade $SiC_f/SiC$ composites are briefly reviewed. A CVI-processed $SiC_f/SiC$ composite with a PyC or $(PyC-SiC)_n$ interphase utilizing Hi-Nicalon Type S or Tyranno SA3 fiber is currently the best combination in terms of the irradiation performance. We also describe important material issues for the application of SiC composites to LWR fuel cladding. The kinetics of the SiC corrosion under LWR conditions needs to be clarified to confirm the possibility of a burn-up extension and the cost-benefit effect of the SiC composite cladding. In addition, the development of end-plug joining technology and fission products retention capability of the ceramic composite tube would be key challenges for the successful application of SiC composite cladding.

  • Continuous SiC fiber-reinforced SiC composites ($SiC_f$/SiC) were fabricated by electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Nine types of slurries with different powder contents, binder resin amounts and slurry pH were deposited on Tyranno$^{TM}$-SA fabrics by EPD at 135 V for ten minutes to determine the optimal conditions. Further EPD using the optimum slurry conditions was performed on fabrics with four different pyrolitic carbon (PyC) thicknesses. The density of the hot-pressed composites decreased with increasing PyC thickness due to the difficulty of infiltrating the slurry into the narrow gaps between the fibers. On the other hand, the mechanical strength increased with increasing PyC thickness despite the decrease in density, which was explained by the enhanced crack deflection with increasing PyC thickness. The $SiC_f$/SiC composites showed the highest density and flexural strength of 94% and 342 MPa, respectively, showing EPD as a feasible method for dense $SiC_f$/SiC fabrication.

  • Sintered composites of Al-8wt%Cu-10vol%SiCp were deformed by repressing or equal channel angular pressing(ECAP) at room temperature, $500^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. Repressing produced more densification than ECAP but resulted in much lower transverse rupture strengths. In both cases, deformation at room temperature and $500^{\circ}C$, resulted in much lower strengths than deformation at $600^{\circ}C$, and also caused the fracturing of some SiC particles. The higher bend strengths and less SiC fracturing at $600^{\circ}C$ are attributable to the presence of an Al-Cu liquid phase during deformation. The employment of copper coated SiC instead of bare SiC particles for preparing the composites was found not improving the properties.

  • The effect of filler sizes on the thermal diffusivity of Nylon 66/SiC composites was investigated. By loading 60 vol% of SiC fillers on Nylon 66, the thermal diffusivity of the composites increased more than 10 times than that of unfilled Nylon 66 and the thermal diffusivity of composites with filler sizes of $24{\mu}m$ and $76{\mu}m$ increased to $2.2{\times}10^{-2}cm^2/sec$ and $1.75{\times}10^{-2}cm^2/sec$, respectively. It is speculated that the smaller filler size ($24{\mu}m$) of SiC is more favorable for the formation of thermal conductive path that the larger size ($76{\mu}m$) of filler composites. The thermal diffusivity of Nylon 46/SiC 400 (60 vol%) composites was $1.61{\times}10^{-2}cm^2/sec$ that was lower than that of Nylon 66/SiC (60 vol%) composites.

  • Large amounts of the waste SiC sludge containing small amounts of Si and organic lubricant were produced during the wire cutting process of the single silicon crystal ingots. The waste SiC sludge was purified by the washing process and the purified SiC powders were used to fabricate continuously porous $SiC-Si_3N_4$ composites using a fibrous monolithic process, in which carbon, $6wt\%\;Y_2O_3-2\;wt\%\;A1_2O_3$ and ethylene vinyl acetate were added as a pore-forming agent, sintering additives, and binder, respectively. In the burning-out process, carbon was fully removed and continuously porous $SiC-Si_3N_4$ composites were successfully fabricated. The green bodies containing SiC, Si particles and sintering additives were nitrided at $1410^{\circ}C$ in a flowing $N_2+10\%\;H_2$ gas mixture. Continuously porous composites were combined with SiC, ${\alpha}Si_3N_4,\;\beta-Si_3N_4$ and a few $\%$ of Fe phases. The pore size of the 2nd and the 3rd passed $SiC-Si_3N_4$ composites was $260\;{\mu}m$ and $35\;{\mu}m$ in diameter, respectively.

  • C/SiC composites were prepared by boron nitride (BN)-assisted liquid silicon infiltration (LSI), and their anti-oxidation and mechanical properties were investigated. The microstructures, bulk densities, and porosities of the C/SiC composites demonstrated that the infiltration of liquid silicon into the composites improved them, because the layered-structure BN worked as a lubricant. Increasing the amount of BN improved the anti-oxidation of the prepared C/SiC composites. This synergistic effect was induced by the assistance of BN in the LSI. More thermally stable SiC was formed in the composite, and fewer pores were formed in the composite, which reduced inward oxygen diffusion. The mechanical strength of the composite increased up to the addition of 3% BN and decreased thereafter due to increased brittleness from the presence of more SiC in the composite. Based on the anti-oxidation and mechanical properties of the prepared composites, we concluded that improved anti-oxidation of C/SiC composites can be achieved through BN-assisted LSI, although there may be some degradation of the mechanical properties. The desired anti-oxidation and mechanical properties of the composite can be achieved by optimizing the BN-assisted LSI conditions.
