  • Due to current interest in creation of urban space and urban landscape, more emphasis has been placed on underground space development. With increasing number of underground power cables and its importance, a study of backfill materials for pipe is now imperative. Backfill materials require outstanding thermal characteristics since breakdown of cable insulation can be caused if heat generated from transmission of underground power cables had not been effectively discharged through backfill materials. Also, coal ash, which are industrial by-products, is being produced in high volume every year. Among them, ponded ash (PA) is not recycled and instead, mostly buried. Therefore in this study, thermal conductivity test based on mixture ratio (PA, ponded ash : FA, fly ash) was performed to evaluate the thermal conductivity characteristics of CLSM (controlled low strength materials) with coal ash. The results indicate that the mixture ratio (PA, ponded ash : FA, fly ash) of 80:20, water contents of 28~30%, and cement contents of 7-11% showed the highest conductivity at 0.796~0.884W/mK and thus, considered optimal in terms of recycling ponded ash (PA) as well as for maximizing utilization as backfill materials for pipe in underground.

  • Coating pipe(PLP) has been generally used in buried site for protecting the corrosion. To prevent the damage by occurring the defect, other construction or execution works, an anti-oxidation environment was forcibly made by using protective potential. Coating and protective potential are applied simultaneously, but corrosion rate or defects are not easy to observe because soil composition has many uncertainty. Also, defect of coating pipe can not be directly observed. A corrosion coupon can easily measure a corrosion rate directly. The corrosion rate was measured with 6 scenarios using corrosion coupon during about 1 year(6 scenarios are based on soil type and protective potential or not in this research. Resultingly, the corrosion coupon has not occurred in the case of protected by potential current, but corrosion has occurred in a non-protected site. The corrosion rate was measured at least in the clay, and the propensity of corrosion rate was similar in other soil(sand and loams). The local corrosion has occurred in the clay because of high water content. On the other hand, general corrosion was occurred in sand and loams. Commonly, sand is not to corrosive soil. Although, corrosion occurred in sand can be estimated by chemical component and valid with chemical analysis report.

  • Recently, ground subsidence has been continuously occurring in downtown areas, threatening the safety of citizens. Various underground facilities such as water and sewage pipelines and communication pipelines are buried under the road. It is reported that the cause of ground subsidence is the deterioration of various facilities and the reckless development of the underground. In particular, it is known that the biggest cause of ground subsidence is the aging of sewage pipelines. As an existing study related to this, several representative factors of sewage pipelines were selected and a study to predict the risk of ground subsidence through statistical analysis has been conducted. In this study, a data SET was constructed using the characteristics of OO city's sewage pipe characteristics and ground subsidence data, The data set constructed from the characteristics of the sewage pipe of OO city and the location of the ground subsidence was used. The goal of this study was to present a classification model for the occurrence of ground subsidence according to the characteristics of sewage pipes through machine learning. In addition, the importance of each sewage pipe characteristic affecting the ground subsidence was calculated.

  • This study investigated the occurrences, causes, and mitigation of the recent ground subsidence and underground cavity generation events in Korea. Two main causes of ground subsidence are (1) the soil erosion by seepage during tunneling and earth excavation and (2) the damage of underground pipes. The main cause of the soil erosion during tunneling was the uncontrolled groundwater flow. Especially, when excavating soft grounds using a tunnel boring machine (TBM), the ground near TBM operation halt points were found to be the most vulnerable to failure. The damage of underground pipes was mainly caused by poor construction, material deterioration, and differential settlement in soft soils. The ground subsidence during tunneling and earth excavation can be managed by monitoring the outflow of groundwater and eroded soils in construction sites. It is expected that the ground subsidence by the underground pipe damage can be managed or mitigated by life cycle analysis and maintenance of the buried pipes, and by controlling the earth pressure distribution or increasing the bearing capacity at the upper ground of the buried pipes.

  • The heating load using solar hot water is lower in summer than in the other seasons. This decreased heating load leads to the overheating solar collectors and related components. To prevent overheating of the solar collectors, air cooling and shading shields were used. On the other hand, it requires additional mechanical components, and reduces the system reliability. The geothermal heat dump system to release the high temperature heat (over $150^{\circ}C$) transferred from the heat pipe solar collectors was investigated in the present study. Research on the heat dump to cool the solar collector is rare. Therefore, the present study was carried out to collect possible data of a geothermal heat dump to cool the solar collector. A helical type geothermal heat exchanger was buried at a 1.2m depth. Experimentally and numerically, the geothermal heat dump was investigated in terms of the effects of parameters, such as the quantity of solar radiation, aperture area of the collector and the mass flow rate. A pipe length of 50m on the geothermal heat exchanger was suitable with a 0.33 kg/s flow rate. The water reservoir was a possible co-operation solution linked to the geothermal heat exchanger.

  • The underground utilities installed under the ground is an important civil engineering structure, such as water supply and sewerage pipes, underground power lines, various communication lines, and city gas pipes. Such underground utilities can be exposed to risk due to external factors such as concentrated rainfall and vehicle load, and it is important to select and construct an appropriate backfill material. Currently, a method mainly used is to fill the soil around the underground utilities and compact it. But it is difficult to compact the lower part of the buried pipe and the compaction efficiency decreases, reducing the stability of the underground utilities and causing various damages. In addition, there are disadvantages such as a decrease in ground strength due to disturbance of the ground, a complicated construction process, and construction costs increase because the construction period becomes longer, and civil complaints due to traffic restrictions. One way to solve this problem is to use a liquid filler. The liquid filler has advantages such as self-leveling ability, self-compaction, fluidity, artificial strength control, and low strength that can be re-excavated for maintenance. In this study, uniaxial compression strength test and fluidity test were performed to characterize the mixed soil using marine clay, stabilizer, and in-situ soil as backfill material. A freezing-thawing test was performed to understand the strength characteristics of the liquid filler by freezing, and in order to examine the effect of the filling materials on the corrosion of the underground pipe, an electrical resistivity test and a pH test were performed.

  • Grinding, weld deposition, type A sleeve, type B sleeve, composite sleeve, hot tapping and clamp are used as the method to repair the buried pipelines in the United States, UK and Europe. In the event of defect to the pipeline, they have repaired the pipeline through the fitness-for-service assessments. In addition, they have guidelines for the possible repair methods to apply to each type of damage, which is occurred due to the 3rd party construction or corrosion. According to the KGS FS551, Safety Validation in Detail including ECDA(External Corrosion Direct Assessment) as one method of integrity management should be carried out for the old pipeline which supply natural gas as the middle pressure in Korea. Where a defect on the pipelines is found, on the result of Safety Validation in Detail, the pipelines should be repaired or replaced by new piping. However, there are no guidelines or regulations regarding the repair and reinforcement of pipeline, so that, cutting the damaged pipeline and replacing it as a segment of new pipe is the only way in Korea until now. We have suggested pipeline repair methods including type A, B sleeve, composite sleeve, after the survey of foreign repair method and standards including the method of United States and the United Kingdom, and after analysis of the results on pipeline repair test including type A, type B sleeve and composite sleeve.

  • There have been a number of water and sewer pipe breakdown reports followed by ground subsidence. Also, the excavating works for construction due to overcrowding of city have been common. Particularly, in urban areas ground becomes unstable because of the lowered lifeline sinkage followed excavation and backfilling. In order to solve the problem, some reinforcement works for ground by rod tamping or grouting have been applied. However, it is hard to predict when the buried utilities in underground will be damaged. Also, there is a limit for the underground exploration and investigation methods. Therefore, in this study, the estimated about the water soluble polymer pouch including poor mixed admixture which is designed to eliminate the dangerous factors. The reinforcement strength of this method was confirmed by verifying three points: meltiness in a certain period, water solubility in the ground water level, and characteristics of the pouch, which can be stored in daily conditions. It is also proved that this method allows to keep the ground from getting weakened in the installation of water and sewer pipe along with back filling materials.

  • GPR is used for non-destructive investigations, ground investigations, and underground facilities exploration at construction sites. In this study, the applicability to GPR exploration of water pipes linked to Network RTK was presented. Data on the water supply pipes in the study site were acquired using GPR, and the location and depth of buried water pipes could be measured. The accuracy was evaluated from the GNSS observation performance and showed a deviation of -0.16m ~ 0.15m. This satisfied the equipment performance of the public survey work regulation, suggesting that the exploration of water pipes using GPR is possible. Because GPR does not require grounding installation, as in conventional metal pipe detectors, it will increase the efficiency of work for underground facility exploration. Exploration using GPR can acquire the location and depth of metallic and non-metallic underground facilities, so it can be utilized in the construction of a GIS system. If a comparison of the exploration characteristics is carried out, it will be possible to present various uses of underground facility exploration using GPR.

  • Cavity causes settlement and its remediation after an accident results in significant time and economic losses. This study aims to experimentally evaluate the prospect of using infrared camera to detect and measure underground subsidence. Emissivity is necessary to detect the energy emitted from an object and accurately assess temperature using an infrared camera. The emissivity in laboratory tests is fixed to evaluate a reasonable distance between the infrared camera and the object, and temperature values are assessed at various distances. In field experiments, the cavity of the field experiment is simulated using a PVC pipe with a diameter of 5 cm, artificially buried at depths of 5 and 25 cm from the surface. The infrared camera measurements are taken from 4 PM to 3 PM of the next day (a total of 23 h). The analysis included the time-series temperature distribution and the cooling rate index assessment, which represents the temperature change rate per unit of time. The results showed that various temperature trends are observed depending on the location of the subsidence. This study demonstrates that the infrared camera can be used to assess the condition of the subsurface.
