The objective of this study was to find out the most optimal bulbil size and planting densities of garlic bulbils to germination for production of leaf garlic. In the first this experiment, the bulbils classified by the size of bulbil to Big (>0.2) and Small (${\leq}0.2$), were planted at $13,680bulbils/m^2$ and $18,240bulbils/m^2$ (Big), $18,240bulbils/m^2$ and $22,800bulbils/m^2$ (Small), respectively. The germination rate, plant height and total yield were measured. In the second experiment, length, width, fresh weight and dry weight of 200 garlic bulbils were measured to analyze the correlation of days to first germination, T50 and germination rate. In the first experiment, the germination rate showed the highest at Big bulbils. The density of $18,240bulbils/m^2$ was the most suitable for cultivation because of the highest germination rate. In the case of yield, it was found that both of the fresh weight and the dry weight of Big bulbil was 2.8 times heavier than Small bulbil. Therefore, Big bulbil with the density of $18,240bulbils/m^2$ was the most suitable for cultivation because of the highest yield. The correlation between each factor of morphological characteristics had a positive correlation between fresh weight, dry weight and width. Also, the germination rate had a positive correlation with fresh weight and width. And, days to first germination and T50 had a negative correlation with fresh weight and width. In conclusion, the optimal planting density is $18,240bulbils/m^2$ and the optimal size of bulbil was 0.2g or more. However, thicker and heavier bulbils could lead to higher and faster germination.

This study was conducted to evaluate cultivation to save the production method cost of warm type garlic. The optimum system for producing excellent seed bulbs by using bulbils of garlic has been required. The bigger size bulbils induced fast growth and lower rate of non-cloved bulbs. The ratio of non-cloved bulbs was the highest in the 0.1 g bulbils sowing of 'Namdo' and was low in the big size bulbils sowing. The bulbil growth rate of 'Deaseo' was much faster than that of 'Namdo', but most of 'Deaseo' bulbils showed low rate of non-cloved bulbs and small size scales in bulbs. The higher productivities of "Namdo" bulbils appeared at the September 11th sowing time, but 'Deaseo' bulbils produced small size non-cloved bulbs and got the very low ratio of non-cloved bulb production in all of the treatment, sowing that Jeju Island could not produce the non-cloved bulbs with 'Deaseo' garlic bulbuls. The growth rate such as leave number, leave length, bulb and clove size in the sowing distance of big size bulbils increased as the sowing distance was wider, but the rate of non-cloved bulbils decreased regardless of treatment. More than 3 g clove in the $10{\times}15cm$ distance of bulbs was produced resulted in sowing clove production potentials by using big size bulbil.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of planting dates using garlic bulbils for production of seed garlic. The planting dates were examined using 0.2 g bulbils of 'Namdo' or 'Danyang'. For the planting dates study conducted in the middle regions, the bulbils of 'Danyang' planted in autumn produced bulb weight ranging from 3.1 to 3.5 g and percentage of harvest ranged from 61 to 71. The bulbils of 'Danyang' planted in spring produced bulb weight ranging from 1.8 to 2.8 g and percentage of harvest ranged from 53 to 60. The most desirable planting date was in the early October for the middle regions. For the planting dates study conducted in the southern regions, the bulbils of 'Namdo' planted in autumn produced bulb weight ranging from 1.8 to 3.0 g and percentage of harvest ranged from 74 to 89. The bulbils of 'Danyang' planted in spring produced bulb weight ranging from 0.6 to 1.0 g and percentage of harvest ranged from 47 to 56. The most desirable planting date was in the mid and late September for the southern regions.
This study was carried out to investigate seed bulbs production of 'Namdo' garlic (Allium sativum L.) by treating with 200 mM $K_3PO_4$ and 200 mM $KNO_3$ solution to bulbils. The growth characteristics of garlic plants derived from bulbils sown on 3 different dates were compared to those of plants derived from non-treated bulbils. Time required for 50% shoot emergence ($T_{50}$) was shortened as the sowing dates delayed. However, the final emergence rate was increased in the early sowing dates, and was high when treated with $K_3PO_4$ and sown on Oct. 10. The % clove differentiation of bulb was not significantly affected by sowing date and chemicals treatment of the bulbils. In all treatments, % clove differentiation was greater than 85%. The average bulb weight was increased with earlier sowing. Bulbils treated with $K_3PO_4$ and sown on Oct. 10 exhibited the best growth and yield. which was 27% higher compared to the non-treated bulbils.
Endogenous ABA and batatasins were first quantified in the stored tubers and bulbils of the Chinese yam, Dioscorea opposita Thunb. cv. 'Tsukune' by GC-MS with comparison of internal standard, and sugar content was also analyzed by HPLC with comparison of external standard. Endogenous ABA content in stored tubers and bulbils was rapidly decreased as storage period prolonged. ABA content of the bulbils was always higher than that of tuber during storage periods. All batatasins of stored tubers and bulbils at 30 days after storage decreased steadily compared to 120 days after storage. On the contrary, batatasin-Ⅲ of the stored tuber and bulbils was only decreased at 60 days after storage. In Dioscorea opposita Thunb. cv. 'Tsukune' like D. japonica, D. alata, and D. bulbifera, may be controlled by endogenous batatasins and ABA, In these compounds, batatasins rather than ABA might be closely related to dormancy-inducing compound during dormancy of the Chinese yam, Dioscorea opposita Thunb. cv. Tsukune.
The annual productions of yam and its aerial bulbils are estimated to 5,000 and 2,500 ton, respectively. But the majority of bulbils had been discarded without specific use. In this study, methanol extract and its organic solvent fractions were prepared from bulbils of Dioscorea batatas Decne, and their antimicrobial, antithrombin, and antioxidant activities were evaluated, respectively. The methanol extract contained 58.98% of water-soluble materials as like yam's extract. But the bulbils's extract contained 12-folds of total polyphenol and 3.4-folds of total flavonoids compared than yam's extract, respectively. For antimicrobial activity the hexane and ethyl acetate fraction showed strong antibacterial activity at $500{\mu}g/disc$ concentration against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Antifungal activity was not observed in any fractions. Strong antithrombin activity was found in the hexane fractions. At 4.8 mg/mL concentration thrombin time (TT) was over 300 sec, which is 4-folds extended than the TT of yam. In a while, the ethyl acetate fraction showed strong DPPH scavenging activity ($IC_{50}$ of $38.1{\mu}g/mL$), SOD-like activity and reducing power, which are comparable to vitamin C or BHT. Our results suggest that the bulbils of yam as yam tuber have useful bio-activities, such as antibacterial, antithrombosis, and antioxidant activity.

Dioscorea alata L, commonly known as "tropical yam" is the most widely consumed yam species among the 650 yam species belonging to the Dioscoreacea family. It is extensively cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions and is a major food source in Africa and India. Also, it is used for medicinal purposes, particularly in China and Taiwan, for its anti-inflammatory properties. In comparison to other yam varieties such as D. batatas or D. opposita, the tropical yam has gained popularity in Korea due to its higher yield per unit area. In this study, the nutritional characteristics and anti-thrombosis activity of the aerial bulbils of D. alata L. tropical yam were compared to those of D. opposita. The results showed that the aerial bulbils of tropical yam exhibited nutritional characteristics and potent anticoagulant activity compared to those of domestic yam varieties. The bulbils extract of tropical yam showed superior anticoagulant activities against thrombin, prothrombin and blood coagulation factors. Furthermore, the bulbils extract of tropical yam exhibited strong platelet aggregation inhibition at 0.25 mg/ml and showed no hemolytic activity up to a concentration of 2.5 mg/ml. These findings suggest the potential development of high-value anti-thrombosis agents utilizing the aerial bulbils of tropical yam.
The various cultural practices of bulbils were tested for seed tuber production in Chinese yam (Dioscorea batatas Decne.). To obtain amount of seed tuber, yam bulbils were sowed from early April to early May. The late sowing reduced average tuber weight, and consequently the amount of small tubers less than 20g increased highly. The optimum seeding rate of bulbils was 200 kg/10 a for production of seed-tubers. The average tuber weight was decreased according to increasing of seeding rate, so the amount of small tubers among total harvested tubers increased greatly at high seeding rate. Tuber size was affected by bulbil size. Seeding of the larger size bulbils result in increased sprouting rate, each tuber weight and tuber yield per unit area.
This study was carried out to determine the promising method for the production of mother bulbs using garlic bulbs at the experimental field of Ange high school, Eusung in Korea from 1996 to 1998. The bulbs and bulbils were taken from a local cultivar 'Eusung' garlic. The growth of bulbil and yield potential were compared with different harvesting times and cultivation methods of bulbil. The harvesting time of bulbils which were capable of producing the mother bulbs was ranged from 15 days to 30 days after the emergence of flower stalks. The best results based on the yield and number of bulbs were obtained from the bulbils sampled at the just before garlic harvesting, 30 days after flower-stalk emergence. The mulching with transparent polyethylene(PE) film in bulbil cultivation was more effective for the plant growth and bulb formation than that with black PE film. The PE mulching from 30 days after seeding of bulbils to 30 days (late-April) before bulb harvesting was the moot effective for the increase of bulb yield. In the cultivation of garlic bulbils, application of lime (150 kg/10a) and compost (3,000 kg/10a) without any chemical fertilizers produced more bulbs in comparison with the standard level of fertilizer (N - $P_2O_5$ - $K_2O$ - compost - lime = 24.8 - 8.0 - 19.2 - 3,000 - 150 kg/10a). It was determined that the involucre seeding and assemble seeding of bulbils was effective and labour-saving methods for the production of mother bulbs from garlic bulbils. Input of labour force for the involucre seeding was decreased up to 61% as compared with the conventional drill seeding of bulbils. Mean yield from the cultivation of bulbil-derived single cloves was remarkably increased up to 95% in comparison with that of the common cloves. The larger size of single clove produced more yields, and the optimum planting density of single clove was $20{\times}10cm$. The cloves differentiated directly from bulbil showed to have higher yield potential than that from common cloves.
Mechanical characteristics of flower stalks (scapes) of garlic such as shear forces, cutting forces, and modulus of elasticities were investigated as a preliminary research to develop a mechanical harvester of garlic bulbils. The average shear forces of garlic scapes was 0.642 N and the maximum and minimum shear forces were 1.42 and 0.25 N, respectively. The shear forces generally increased as the diameter of garlic scapes increased. There was no correlation between the modulus of elasticity and the diameter of garlic scapes and the average modulus of elasticity of garlic scapes was around $2.40\times10^7\;N/m^2$ There was also no correlation between the cutting force and the diameter of garlic scapes. As the downward speed of blade increased, the cutting force of garlic scapes decreased and reversed to increase. The cutting forces of the lower part garlic scapes were lower than those of the upper part. The range of cutting forces of the lower and the upper part of garlic scapes were 3.88-4.04 N and 4.29-4.93 N, respectively.
