  • The two-fluid equations are widely used to simulate two-phase flows in a nuclear reactor. For the two-fluid momentum equation, the wall and interfacial drag terms play an important role in predicting a two-phase flow behavior. Since the bubble density is much smaller than the water density, the bubble accelerates faster than the liquid in a nozzle. As a result, the bubble phase becomes faster than the liquid phase in the nozzle. In contrast, the opposite phenomena occur in the diffuser. The purpose of our study is to experimentally show these behaviors in an area-varying channel such as nozzle and diffuser. Experiments were made of turbulent bubbly flows in an area-varying horizontal channel. The velocities of the bubble and liquid phases were measured by the PIV technique. It was shown that the two-phase velocities were no longer close to each other in the area-varying regions. The bubble was faster than the liquid in the nozzle; in contrast, the bubble was slower than the liquid in the diffuser. Code simulations were also performed using the MARS code. By replacing the original wall drag model in the MARS code with Kim (1)'s wall drag partition model, we obtained the simulation results being consistent with experimental observations.

  • This paper describes an automatic finite element mesh generation for finite element analysis of three-dimensional structures. It is consisting of fuzzy knowledge processing, bubble meshing and solid geometry modeler. This novel mesh generation process consists of three subprocesses: (a) definition of geometric model, i.e. analysis model, (b) generation of bubbles, and (c) generation of elements. One of commercial solid modelers is employed for three-dimensional solid structures. Bubble is generated if its distance from existing bubble points is similar to the bubble spacing function at the point. The bubble spacing function is well controlled by the fuzzy knowledge processing. The Delaunay method is introduced as a basic tool for element generation. Automatic generation of finite element for three-dimensional solid structures holds great benefits for analyses. Practical performances of the present system are demonstrated through several mesh generations for 3D geometry.

  • Real estate prices affect countries, businesses, and households, and many studies have been conducted on the real estate bubble in recent soaring real estate prices. However, if the real estate bubble prediction simply compares the real estate price, or if it does not reflect key psychological variables in real estate sales, it can be judged that the accuracy of the bubble prediction model is poor. The purpose of this study is to design a predictive model that can explain the real estate bubble situation by region using the autoencoder technique. Existing real estate bubble analysis studies failed to set various types of variables that affect prices, and most of them were conducted based on linear models. Thus, this study suggests the possibility of introducing techniques and variables that have not been used in existing real estate bubble studies.

  • In the present study, the gas injection system based on air-water model was designed to investigate the behavior characteristics of bubbles injected into a ladle. The parameters such as gas volume fraction and bubble rise velocity were exprementally measured in a gas-liquid flow region. To measure gas volume fraction, an electo-conductivity probe was used and bubble rise velocity was obtained by a high speed CCD camera. Gas volume fraction was symmetric to the axis of nozzle secured on the bottom of a ladle. The bubble rise velocity was calculated for two different experimental conditions. That is, gas flow conditions were following two case: 1) Q = $0.63{\times}10^{-4}$ $m^{3}/s$, 2) $1.26{\times}10^{-4}$ $m^{3}/s$. As a gas injected into the liquid ladle, the liquid-phase region is circulated by bubbles' behavior. The bubble rise velocity was influenced of the circulation flow of liquid phase. As a result, the bubble rise velocity was appeared higher middle region of ladle than near the nozzle.

  • This study investigated a lab-scale inducing method for efficient astaxanthin accumulation. As a model system. Haematococcus pluvialis was cultivated in 2 liter bubble-column photobioreactors. The astaxanthin - inducing results using high light irradiation were compared with that of the control experiment under standard irradiation (40 ${\mu}E/m^2/s$). After the late linear growth phase (> 20 days). high light energy (230 ${\mu}E/m^2/s$) was supplied to the culture broth for astaxanthin induction. As a result. the dr γ cell weight and the astaxanthin productivity were increased up to 68% and 215%, respectively. higher than those of the control experiment. This result indicates that bubble-column type photobioreactor is a good candidate for mass cultivation of H. pluvialis and high light irradiation is an efficient induction method for astaxanthin accumulation in lab-scale bubble-column photobioreactors.

  • A finite element-based, integrated process model has been developed and applied to predict the detailed, three-dimensional aspects of the thermo-mechanical behavior occurring in the slab caster considering inclusion removal from molten steel by argon bubble flotation. Gas bubbles are simulated using the dispersion model calculating the volume fraction, and the bubble capture effect is included by a source term in the transport equation for particles. The process model is applied to the investigation of the effect of various process parameters on the inclusion removal in the molten steel.

  • Mode interactions at Unstable fluid interfaces induced by a shock wave (Richtmyer-Meshkov Instability) are studied both analytically and numerically. The analytical approach is based on a potential flow model with source singularities in incompressible fluids of infinite density ratio. The potential flow model shows that a single bubble has a decaying growth rates at late time and an asymptotic constant radius. Bubble interactions, bubbles of different radii propagates with different velocities and the leading bubbles grow in size at the expense of their neighboring bubbles, are predicted by the potential flow model. This phenomenon is validated by full numerical simulations of the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability in compressible fluids for initial multi-frequency perturbations on the unstable interface.

  • A numerical method for simulating bubble motion during nucleate boiling is presented. The vapor-liquid interface is captured by a level set method which can easily handle breaking and merging of the interface and can calculate an interfacial curvature more accurately than the VOF method using a step function. The level set method is modified to include the effects of phase change at the interface and contact angle at the wall as well as to achieve mass conservation during the whole calculation procedure. Also, a simplified model to predict the heat flux in a thin liquid microlayer is developed. The method is applied for simulation of a sliding bubble on a vertical surface to further understand the physics of partial boiling. Based on the computed results, the effects of contact angle, wall superheat and phase change on a sliding bubble are quantified.

  • The adiabatic two-phase flow in single rectangular microchannels was studied for different aspect ratios. The working fluids were liquid water and nitrogen gas. The hydraulic diameters of the rectangular microchannels were 490, 322, and $143\;{\mu}m$, and the widths of the microchannels were around $500\;{\mu}m$. The two-phase flow pattern was visualized using a high-speed camera and a long-distance microscope. This study was focused on bubble flow regimes. From the visualized images, the bubble velocity, bubble length, number of bubbles, and void fraction were evaluated. Further, the pressure drop in a single bubble was evaluated by using a unit cell model. The bubble velocity is proportional to the superficial velocity. Further, the relationship between the void fraction and the volumetric quality is linear. The pressure drop in a single elongated bubble is strongly related to the aspect ratio. Finally, the new correlation about the pressure drop of a single elongated bubble in the rectangular microchannel was proposed.

  • This study aims to analyze the properties of the temperature change in vertical reinforcements in outdoor wall structures in winter in relation to the different methods of bubble sheet installation, and to subsequently determine the possibility of initial frost damage to the concrete as a result of low temperature. As for the experimental variables, double bubble sheets were used as curing materials, and the curing method was to model the part where the slab and the wall intersect and the rebar is exposed, and to measure the change of temperature around the exposed rebar in accordance with the change of the coating curing. It was found that by employing curing method B, which is to install the bubble sheet between the vertical reinforcements, the most vulnerable area, which is 50mm below(④) the surface of the concrete, would be lowered to sub-zero temperature 20 hours later than when using curing method A, and that therefore it is more effective to install the bubble sheet between the vertical reinforcements for the prevention of initial frost damage.
