  • The twig blight of mulberry caused by Fusarium lateritium occurs mainly in Buan area, which is the main area of mulberry. The initial symptom on twigs showed dark edge blight and dark orange tiny particles on the spot, and it was withered and died. In the case of mulberry twig blight, the difference in the degree of occurrence between the years is intense, and an average of 2.7% occurred in Buan in 2013, but in 2014, it was difficult to search for the generated fields. In order to find the cause of the difference in the incidence of mulberry twig blight, we investigated and analyzed the weather conditions during cultivation and as a result, the occurrence of the disease increased under the condition that the temperature of the spring was lower and the number of days passing below the winter freezing point increased. In addition, it was analyzed that the occurrence of the next year increases when the rainfall is high and the number of sunshine is low after removing the harvested branches. Therefore, in the event that weather conditions causing twig blight diseases have elapsed, it is necessary to prevent the disease by spraying the registered applied fungicide prophylactically.

  • Nine strains of high concentrations of salt-tolerant bacteria were isolated from the rhizosphere and rhizoplane of the halophyte plant Suaeda japonica grown in Gochang Buan tidal flat. The isolated bacteria were classified as genera Vibrio (strains JRS-1, -2, -3, -4, and -5, and JRL-1 and -4) and Bacillus (strains JRL-2 and -3) based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The optical growth condition for salt concentration was examined on the selected, representative strains. Strain JRS-1 with the closest relative of Vibrio neocaledonicus showed the highest growth rate at the total salt concentration of 6% among the incubation conditions of 3-8% salt concentrations. Strain JRL-2 with the closest relative of Bacillus thuringiensis showed the tendency that growth rate increased with increasing salt concentrations and the maximum growth rate at 7% of the total salt concentration. The isolated bacteria showed salt-resistances to higher salt concentrations than their habitat soils with 3%. In addition, we identified evidences of potentially plant interaction-relevant enzymatic activities, from utilization of some substrates rich in plants, such as triglyceride, ${\rho}$-nitrophenyl-${\alpha}$,$\text\tiny{D}$-glucoside, and ${\rho}$-nitrophenyl-${\beta}$,$\text\tiny{D}$-glucoside.

  • Since the April of 1978, Korea has strongly relied on the nuclear energy for electricity generation. As of today, eighteen nuclear power plants are in operation and ten are to be inaugurated by 2015. The installed nuclear capacity is 15, 716 MW as of the end of 2002, representing 29.3% of the nation's total installed capacity. The nuclear share in electricity remains around 38.9 at the end of 2002, reaching at the level of 119 billion kWh's. New power reactors, KSNP's (Korea Standard Nuclear Power Plant) are fully based on the domestic technologies. More advanced reactors such as KNGR (Korea Next Generation Reactor) will be commercialized soon. Even though the front end nuclear cycle enjoys one of the best positions in the world, there have been some chronical problems in the back end fuel cycle. That's the one of the reason why we need more active R&D programs in Korea and active international and regional cooperation in this area. The everlasting NIMBY problem hinders the implementation of the nation's radioactive waste management program. We expect that the storage capacity for the LILW(Low and Intermediate Level radioactive Waste) will be dried out soon. The situation for the spent fuel storage is also not so favorable too. The storage pools for spent fuel are being filled rapidly so that in 2008, some AR pools cannot accommodate any more new spent nuclear fuels. The Korean Government in strong association with utilities and national academic and R&D institutes have tried its best effort to secure the site for a LILW repository and a AFR site. Finally, one local community, Buan in Jeonbook Province, submitted the petition for the site. At the end of the last July, the Government announced that the Wido, a small island in Buan, is suitable for the national complex site. The special force team headed by Dr IS Chang, president of KAERI teamed with Government officials and many prominent scholars and journalists agreed that by the evidences from the preliminary site investigation, they could not find any reason for rejecting the local community's offer.

  • To research changes in the fish community of intertidal zones in relation to the construction of the Saemangeum tidal embankment, fishes were collected in the tide pools of Naechodo, Gunsan-si, and of Haechang, Buan-gun in Jeollabuk-do, every month from December 2002 to October 2004. Based on the fishes collected and data from previous studies show that in the tide pools of Haechang, the number of species decreased, and the dominant species is Tridentiger trigonocephalus, as before. However, in the tide pools of Naechodo, the number of species decreased, and the dominant species changed from T. trigonocephalus to Synechogobius hasta. Favonigobius gymnauchen, which inhabits sand-beds, decreased remarkably. Meanwhile, in the intertidal zone of Haechang, young black porgy were caught in large quantities, while in the intertidal zone of Naechodo, young Acanthopagrus schlegelii and Lateolabrax japonicus, which had been caught in a large amounts between 1994 and 2000, were not caught. The results are thought to show that the intertidal zone of Naechodo, Gunsan-si, had more deposits by tide flats than that of Haechang, Buan-gun, which drastically changed the habitat of its fish community.

  • This investigation was conducted to know the present conditions of the the chemical components in the soils and chemical fertilizer rates applied in the Yuyu village located Sanne myun, Buan gun, Jeonbug province. Total silkworm rearing farms in this village were 54 and 47 of them were chosen at random. Average fertilizer rate applied in this village was 40.8-13.7-13.9kg/10a as N-P$_2$O$\_$5/-K$_2$O. Farmers seemed to stress too much to nitrogen fertilizer. Available P$_2$O$\_$5/ in soils was below 7ppm (by Bray No. 1 method). However, 47% of the farms applied phosphate fertilizer less than 11kg/10a. The average of exchangeable K in soils was 0.68me/100g. Nine of the farms applied potassium fertilizer more than 20kg/10a and 7 farms of them had the soils contained above 0.4me/100g as the potassium content. The average soil pH was 5.3. All of the soils were below than pH 6.5. Exchangeable Ca and Mg were 3.62 and 0.83me/100g, respectively. The average lime requirement was 269kg/10a. The average organic matter content was 2.55% and for 72% of the total farms, organic matter content was below than 3%.

  • The characterization of chemical properties and analogy of mallufactured origin for the nine potsherds and eleven celadon sherds collected in Wonnae-dong, Daejeon and Yucheon-ri, Buan, respectively were performed by analyzing their body and glaze compositions and compared with previous data reported. The chemical compositions of the body and glaze were determined by XRF and EPMA, respectively. The trace elements of the body were analyzed by ICP-MS. The Seger analysis and principal components analysis were used to compare the major compositions of body and glaze of the potteries we found with previous data. Wonnae-dong's Whiteware (C-1) showed considerably high $SiO_2$ concentration differently from the other potteries. Wonnae-dong's Whiteware (C-2) showed similar characteristics with potteries of Seoul-Kyeongi and Daejeon-Chungnam provinces in chemical compositions of the body and the glaze. Wonnae-dong's celadons (B-1 and B-2) were classified as the group of Daejeon, Chungman provincial potteries in chemical compositions of the body. It was difficult to distinguish the characteristic differences in the Buncheong data between the provinces with the Seger formula analysis and the PCA. Celadon from Yucheon-ri site showed the same characteristics with previous data reported. The results above demonstrated that it is reasonable to study the characterization of potteries and analogy of manufactured origin with a comparison for the chemical compositions of the body and the glaze of the potteries by using the Seger formula analysis and the PCA.

  • This study was conducted to identify the characteristics of bird population dynamics using unmanned monitoring system in rice paddy. We compared the similarity of population dynamics of birds between unmanned monitoring system and field survey, and evaluated the spatial and temporal patterns of population dynamics of birds using the unmanned monitoring system. The monitoring using the system was conducted from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2016 in Cheolwon, Dangjin, Buan, and Heanam. The images from the system were obtained at 10-min intervals from 6:00 to 20:00. The field survey was conducted once a month in Dangjin from January to December 2016. Total 91,980 images were obtained from the unmanned monitoring system. We extracted the number of individuals for herons, shorebirds, and waterfowl from the images. The population dynamics of waterbirds using the unmanned monitoring system were similar to that in field survey. Especially, population dynamics of herons was more similar than other waterbirds. It was identified that the population dynamics of herons using the unmanned monitoring system was different among the Cheolwon, Dangjin, Buan, and Heanam. Furthermore, the unmanned monitoring system was available on various time scale such as month, day, and minute. It is expected that long-term data storage using the unmanned monitoring system can be used to identify in detail and forecast the population dynamics of birds in rice paddy.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of storage, temperature, and pre-treatments on the germination of Melia azedarach seeds collected from Buan, Jeonju, and Jeju provenance. M. azedarach seeds stored with or without pericarp in the ground, which collected from Buan provenance evidenced the highest germination percentage (PG, %) and the shortest time to first germination (days). The seeds collected from Jeonju and Jeju provenance were placed at both six continuous temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and $40^{\circ}C$) and two alternating temperatures ($20{\leftrightarrow}30^{\circ}C$ and $25{\leftrightarrow}35^{\circ}C$) for seed incubation. The results showed a significant effect for temperature of seed incubation. The seeds incubated at $35^{\circ}C$ had the highest PG among the continuous temperatures and germinated significantly more at the two alternating temperatures than at $35^{\circ}C$. Concerning mean germination time (MGT), the seeds incubated at $35^{\circ}C$ evidenced the shortest germinations among the continuous temperatures while those at the alternating temperatures germinated for a shorter period than those at $35^{\circ}C$. The germination rate (GR) and germination performance index (GPI) were similar to PG. The seeds collected from Jeonju provenance were treated using five pre-sowing treatments (scarification, scarifcation+$GA_3$, scarification+$KNO_3$, $GA_3$, and $KNO_3$) prior to the germination experiments. Compared with the intact seeds (control), most of the pre-treatments were significantly (especially scarification+$GA_3$ 100 ppm and scarification+$KNO_3$ 1.0%) higher in PG, GR, and GPI, as well as shorter in MGT.

  • The weed flora in the mulberry fields were investigated in Suwon, Jeonju, and Buan in May, July, and September of 2014. The objectives of this study were to use the survey data for establishing weed control methods and to bring awareness of possible problematic weeds in the Korean mulberry fields. The survey was conducted in 53 regions, covering approximately $145,925m^2$. Altogether 153 weed species of 37 families were identified, of which 68 were annual, 39 species were biennial and 46 were perennial. The dominance was the highest with Digitaria ciliaris followed by Erigeron annuus, Chenopodium album, Echinochloa crus-galli var.crus-galli, Acalypha australis, Commelina communis etc. Exotic weeds presented 44 species with 28.8% of a total presence, of which Erigeron annuus was the highest, followed by Chenopodium album, Phytolacca americana, Conyza canadensis, Oxalis corymbosa etc. Especially, we should aware Senecio vulgaris, not controlled with glufosinate ammonium SL in the Korean mulberry fields because it was known as atrazine resistance in US, Canada, Germany etc. In the PCA plot, weeds presented in the mulberry fields were divided into two groups, Eclipta prostrata community and Stellaria aquatic community and weed flora of Suwon and Buan were different due to those only presented in Suwon.
