To identify the bridge information from the response of test vehicles passing on it (also known as the indirect approach) has aroused the interest of many researchers thanks to its economy, easy implementation and less disruption to traffic. The surface roughness of bridge remains an obstacle for such method as it contaminates the vehicle response severely and thereby renders many vehicle-response-based bridge identification methods ineffective. This study aims to eliminate such effect with the responses of two different test vehicles. The proposed method can estimate the surface profile of a bridge based on the acceleration data of the vehicles running on the bridge successively, and obtain the normalized contact point response, which proves to be relatively immune to surface roughness. The frequencies and mode shapes of bridge can be further extracted from the normalized contact point acceleration with spectral analysis and Hilbert transform. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified numerically with a three-span continuous bridge. The influence of measurement noise is also examined.
Deficient modes that cannot be always identified from different sets of measurement data may exist in the application of operational modal analysis such as the stochastic subspace identification techniques in large-scale civil structures. Based on a recent work using the long-term ambient vibration measurements from an instrumented cable-stayed bridge under different wind excitation conditions, a benchmark problem is launched by taking the same bridge as a test bed to further intensify the exploration of mode identifiability. For systematically assessing this benchmark problem, a recently developed SSI algorithm based on an alternative stabilization diagram and a hierarchical sifting process is extended and applied in this research to investigate several sets of known and blind monitoring data. The evaluation of delicately selected cases clearly distinguishes the effect of traffic excitation on the identifiability of the targeted deficient mode from the effect of wind excitation. An additional upper limit for the vertical acceleration amplitude at deck, mainly induced by the passing traffic, is subsequently suggested to supplement the previously determined lower limit for the wind speed. Careful inspection on the shape vector of the deficient mode under different excitation conditions leads to the postulation that this mode is actually induced by the motion of the central tower. The analysis incorporating the tower measurements solidly verifies this postulation by yielding the prevailing components at the tower locations in the extended mode shape vector. Moreover, it is also confirmed that this mode can be stably identified under all the circumstances with the addition of tower measurements. An important lesson learned from this discovery is that the problem of mode identifiability usually comes from the lack of proper measurements at the right locations.

In this study, a method to estimate the suspension bridge deflection is developed using mode decomposition technique. In order to examine the suspension bridge stability against these dynamic loadings, the prediction of displacement response is very important to evaluate bridge stability. However, it is recognized that any measurement of movement for suspension bridges may be difficult for the absence of proper methods to measure the displacement response on site. This study aims at suggesting a method to estimate the displacement response from the measured strain signals in an indirect way to predict the displacement response, not a direct way to measure the displacement response. Additionally, by applying the FBG sensors with multi-point measurements not influenced by electric noise, it can be expected that the technique would be applicable to infrastructures.
This paper proposes techniques to diagnose short-circuit faults of both the diodes and power FET in switching mode power supply (SMPS) by using a simple analog tester. The diodes in full-bridge rectifier, power FET, switching transformer, and some sensors are modelled with resistor. The total resistance value measured at the input terminal of a SMPS is analyzed when the short-circuit faults of diodes in a full bridge rectifier or power FET are occurred. The short-circuit faults of one or two diodes in a full bridge rectifier, power FET, and both the diodes in a full bridge rectifier and power FET can be detected by a range of total resistance, which is measured by the analog tester. Through experiments, the theoretical analysis for total resistance under short-circuit faults can be verified.
In modal analysis, the mode shape reflects the vibration characteristics of the structure, and thus it is widely performed for finite element model updating and structural health monitoring. Generally, the acceleration-based mode shape is suitable to express the characteristics of structures for the translational vibration; however, it is difficult to represent the rotational mode at boundary conditions. A tilt sensor and gyroscope capable of measuring rotational mode are used to analyze the overall behavior of the structure, but extracting its mode shape is the major challenge under the small vibration always. Herein, we conducted a feasibility study on a multi-mode shape estimating approach utilizing a single physical quantity signal. The basic concept of the proposed method is to receive multi-metric dynamic responses from two sensors and obtain mode shapes through bridge loading test with relatively large deformation. In addition, the linear transformation matrix for estimating two mode shapes is derived, and the mode shape based on the gyro sensor data is obtained by acceleration response using ambient vibration. Because the structure's behavior with respect to translational and rotational mode can be confirmed, the proposed method can obtain the total response of the structure considering boundary conditions. To verify the feasibility of the proposed method, we pre-measured dynamic data acquired from five accelerometers and five gyro sensors in a lab-scale test considering bridge structures, and obtained a linear transformation matrix for estimating the multi-mode shapes. In addition, the mode shapes for two physical quantities could be extracted by using only the acceleration data. Finally, the mode shapes estimated by the proposed method were compared with the mode shapes obtained from the two sensors. This study confirmed the applicability of the multi-mode shape estimation approach for accurate damage assessment using multi-dimensional mode shapes of bridge structures, and can be used to evaluate the behavior of structures under ambient vibration.

In this paper, an adaptive MEMD based modal identification technique for linear time-invariant systems is proposed employing multiple vibration measurements. Traditional empirical mode decomposition (EMD) suffers from mode-mixing during sifting operations to identify intrinsic mode functions (IMF). MEMD performs better in this context as it considers multi-channel data and projects them into a n-dimensional hypercube to evaluate the IMFs. Using this technique, modal parameters of the structural system are identified. It is observed that MEMD has superior performance compared to its traditional counterpart. However, it still suffers from mild mode-mixing in higher modes where the energy contents are low. To avoid this problem, an adaptive filtering scheme is proposed to decompose the interfering modes. The Proposed modified scheme is then applied to vibrations of a reinforced concrete road bridge. Results presented in this study show that the proposed MEMD based approach coupled with the filtering technique can effectively identify the parameters of the dominant modes present in the structural response with a significant level of accuracy.
In DC distribution systems, a TAB converter employing multiple transformers is one of the most widely used topologies due to its high power density, modularizability, and cost-effectiveness. However, the conventional control technique for a grid-connected mode in the TAB converter cannot maintain its reliability for an islanding mode under a blackout situation. In this paper, the islanding mode control technique is proposed to solve this issue. To verify the relative stability and dynamic characteristics of the control technique, small-signal models of both the grid connected and the islanding mode are derived. Based on the small-signal models, PI controllers are designed to provide suitable power control. The proposed control technique, the accuracy of small-signal models, and the performance of the controllers are verified by simulations and experiments with a 1-kW prototype TAB converter.
