  • Geometry control of precast members is the most important technology for modular construction. In this paper, image-based modeling and rendering (IBMR) technology was adopted for 3D modeling of precast elements. It is necessary to use match-casting method for precast post-tensioned column assembly. Preassembly using 3D models created by image processing can minimize construction error. Augmented reality devices are used to check the geometry of the segment. Laboratory-scale tests were performed. The proposed process has been applied to the real precast bridge pier segments.

  • Consideration of factors driving crew productivities is imperative for accurate construction time estimation. Their impacts need to be well understood by estimators. There have been, however, little studies that quantified relationships between crew productivities and factors. This paper quantifies impacts of $^{\circ}A$ECrew size $^{\circ}\phi$ on crew productivities, for three highway concrete bridge activities, namely Column, Cap, and Deck, based on data compiled from 17 on-going highway projects in Texas State, USA. It was found that, for Bridge Deck operation, an increase of one crew-worker of formwork and rebarwork by one, leads to an increase of the productivity (cy/crew day) by 2.5 and 2.9, respectively. For the other activities, larger crew sizes did not lead to better crew productivities.

  • Full penetration welded steel moment-resisting frame (SMRF) structures with welded box sections are widely employed in steel bridges, where a large number of steel bridges have been in operation for over fifty years in Japan. Welding defects such as incomplete penetration at the beam-column connections of these existing SMRF steel bridge piers were observed during inspection. Previous experiments conducted by the authors' team indicate that gusset stiffeners (termed fillets in this study) at the beam-web-to-column-web joint of the beam-column connections may play an important role on the seismic performance of the connections. This paper aims to experimentally study the effect of the fillet radius on seismic performance of the connections with large welding defects. Four specimens with different sizes of fillet radii were loaded under quasi-static incremental cyclic loading, where different load-displacement relations and cracking behaviors were observed. The experimental results show that, as the size of the fillet radius increases, the seismic performance of the connections can be greatly improved.

  • In recent days, the foundations of huge structures in general and mega foundations of grand bridges in particular are required in geotechnical engineering. However, previous design method based on virtual fixed point theory cannot adequately predict Pile-Bent structure‘s physical behavior. Therefore, this paper describes a new analysis and design of Pile-Bent structure for grand bridges. A detailed analysis was performed for column-pile interactions using FB-Pier program and Midas program. As a result, the behavior of a column-pile is estimated and highlighted. Moreover, based on this study, it is found that the minimum reinforcement ratio(=0.4%) is applicable for plastic behavior of columns.

  • Existing models for the shear strength degradation of reinforced concrete members present varied conceptual approaches to interpreting test data. The relative superiority of one approach over the others is difficult to determine, particularly given the sparseness of ideal test data. Nevertheless, existing models are compared using a suite of test data that were used for the development of one such model, and significant differences emerge. Rather than relying purely on column test data, the body of knowledge concerning degradation of concrete as a material is considered. Confined concrete relations are examined to infer details of the degradation process, and to establish a framework for developing phenomenologically-based models for shear strength degradation in reinforced concrete members. The possibility of linking column shear strength degradation with material degradation phenomena is explored with a simple model. The model is applied to the results of 7 column tests, and it is found that such a link is sustainable. It is expected that models founded on material degradation phenomena will be more reliable and more broadly applicable than the current generation of empirical shear strength degradation models.

  • In order to increase the load carrying capacity and/or increase the service life of existing circular reinforced concrete bridge columns, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composites could be utilized. Transverse wrapping of circular concrete columns with CFRP sheets increases its axial and shear strengths. In addition, it provides good confinement to the concrete column core, which enhances the bending and compressive strength, as well as, ductility. Several experimental and analytical studies have been conducted on CFRP strengthened concrete cylinders/columns. However, there seem to be lack of thorough investigation of the effect of elevated temperatures on the response of CFRP strengthened circular concrete columns. A concrete confinement model that reflects the effects of elevated temperature on the mechanical properties of CFRP composites, and the efficiency of CFRP in strengthened concrete columns is presented. Tensile strength and modulus of CFRP under hot conditions and their effects on the concrete confinement are the primary parameters that were investigated. A modified concrete confinement model is developed and presented.

  • The high-rise supporting towers of long-span suspension and cable-stayed bridges commonly comprise a pair of slender prisms of roughly square cross-section with a center-to-centre spacing of from perhaps 2 to 6 widths and connected by one or more cross-ties. The tower columns may have a constant spacing as common for suspension bridges or the spacing may reduce towards the top of the tower. The present paper is concerned with the aerodynamics of such towers and describes an experimental investigation of the overall aerodynamic forces acting on a pair of square cylinders in two-dimensional flow. Wind tunnel pressure measurements were carried out in smooth flow and with a longitudinal intensity of turbulence 0.10. Different angles of attack were considered between $0^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$, and separations between the two columns from twice to 13 times the side width of the column. The mean values of the overall forces proved to be related to the bias introduced in the flow by the interaction between the two cylinders; the overall rms forces are related to the level of coherence between the shedding-induced forces on the two cylinders and to their phase. Plots showing the variation of the force coefficients and Strouhal number as a function of the separation, together with the force coefficients spectra and lift cross-correlation functions are presented in the paper.

  • This paper is conducted to compare the seismic design standard of a bridge column such as the Korean Bridge Design Standard(KBDS), EC 8, NZS 3101 and ATC 32. The KBDS adopted the seismic design requirements in 1992. The earthquake magnitude in Korea is compared with those in the west coast of the USA. It may be said that the current seismic design requirements of the KBDS provides design results, that are too conservative especially for transverse reinforcement details and amounts in reinforced concrete columns. This fact usually creates construction problems in concrete casting, due to congestion of transverse reinforcement. Furthermore, the effective stiffness; $I_{eff}$ depends on both the axial load P/$A_gF_{ck}$ and the longitudinal reinforcement ratio $A_{st}/A_g, so it is the conservative to use the effective stiffness I$_{eff}$ than the gross section stiffness Ig. Seismic design for the transverse reinforcement content of the concrete column was analyzed and considered to have an extreme-fiber compression strain, response modification factor, axial load and effective stiffness etc.c.

  • The collapses of curved bridges are mainly caused by the damaged columns, subjected to the combined loadings of axial load, shear force, flexural moment and torsional moment, under earthquakes. However, these combined loadings have not been fully investigated. This paper firstly investigated the mechanical characteristics of the bending-torsion coupling effects, based on the seismic response spectrum analysis of 24 curved bridge models. And then 9 reinforced concrete (RC) and circular column specimens were tested, by changing the bending-tortion ratio (M/T), axial compression ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio and spiral reinforcement ratio, respectively. The results show that the bending-torsion coupling effects of piers are more significant, along with the decrease of girder curvature and the increase of pier height. The M/T ratio ranges from 6 to 15 for common cases, and influences the crack distribution, plastic zone and hysteretic curve of piers. And these seismic characteristics are also influenced by the compression ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio and spiral reinforcement ratios of piers.
