A Study on Temperature Field and Contact Pressure in Ventilated Disc-Pad Brake by 3D Thermo-mechanical Coupling Model (3차원 열-기계 커플링 모델에 의한 벤틸레이티드 디스크-패드 브레이크의 온도 분포와 접촉 압력에 관한 연구)

  • The brake system is important part of automobile safety system. The disc brake system is divided two parts: the rotating axisymmetrical disc and the stationary pads. During braking, the kinetic energy and potential energy of moving vehicle were converted into the thermal energy through frictional heat between the brake disc and the pads. The frictional heat, which is generated on the interface of the disc and pads, can cause high temperature during the braking process. The object of present work is to determine temperature and thermal stress, to compare to simulation results and experimental results in the disc by partial 3D model of ventilated disc brake with appropriate boundary conditions. In the simulation process, the mechanical loads were applied to the thermo-mechanical coupling analysis in order to simulate the process of heat produced by friction.

  • It has many variables and factors to design the friction materials for automotive brake pads. The purpose of this study is to develop the proper method for design of low-cost and to know friction characteristics of each raw materials. For the purpose of examining the effect of each major raw materials, we used the Taguchi L9(3$^4$)orthogonal matrix and 1/5 scale dynamo machine for evaluation of the friction characteristics of composite brake pads. By adapting the Taguchi method, it is easy to investigate the influence of each component in complicated composites friction materials. After analyzing the testing results by the Taguchi method, the effect of factors and levels influenced friction behavior was studied.

A Study on Wear Life Prediction of Disk Brake Pads (디스크 브레이크 패드 수명 예측에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents a numerical technique to analyze wear life of automotive disk brake pad, where FFT-FEM method is adopted to determine the transient temperature distribution of the disk surface. A specimen ova frictional material is tested on a small scale brake dynamometer to find the dependency of the wear rate on temperature change, from which and the temperature analysis results, given the wear test mode, wear behavior of the pad material fur the vehicle can be predicted. Numerical examples show the predicted wear life of the vehicle coincides with the manufacture's recommended time interval for replacing the pads.

  • The analytical-finite element(FE) squeal model is applied to investigate the squeal propensity associated with contact stiffness of the disc brake system. The system contact stiffness is incorporated into the perturbed equations of motion in the analytical manner where the brake components are modeled by FE method. The results show that the contact stiffness of the friction material and the contact stiffness between the pads and caliper are the influential factors on the squeal propensity. Particularly, the modal instability of the 3200 Hz squeal mode drastically changes with respect to the contact stiffness between the pads and caliper.

  • A scattering dust collector in automobile brake pads was investigated in this study. The dust scattering was measured by mounting a booth with a particle counter for both the vehicle-induced wind and brake caliper locations. In addition, the collection effect of the dust scattering was analyzed using the designed dust collector. The results of this study can be used to develop an advanced dust collector and the field test modes for dust scattering in an automotive brake system.

  • Friction materials with four different sizes of zircon - l${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 6${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 75${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 140${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$- were investigated to evaluate the size effects of abrasive particles used in the automotive brake pads on brake performance. Although the brake pads with the largest size of zircon showed a good frictional stability and low wear, rotors were severely abraded due to the aggressiveness of coarse Bircon. As the siBe of zircon decreased. friction force and the amplitude of friction coefficient increased. Considering the above results, abrasive materials were thought to destroy transfer film and the extent of the destruction depends on the size of zircon. The small size zircon was not effective in developing a transfer layer on the rotor surface while minimizing the damage on the counter surface.

  • The brake system is an important part of the automobile safety system. The disc brake system is divided into two parts: a rotating axi-symmetrical disc, and the stationary pads. The frictional heat, which is generated on the interface of the disc and pads, can cause high temperatures during the braking process. The frictional heat source (the pads) is moving on the disc and the location is time-dependent. Our study applies a moving heat source, which is defined by the time and space variable on the frictional surface, in order to simulate the frictional heat behavior accurately during the braking process. The object of the present work is the determination of the temperature distribution and thermal stress in the solid disc by non-axisymmetric 3D modeling for repeated braking.

  • The main cause of scattering dust generated by transportation equipment such as automobiles was largely due to exhaust gas from internal combustion engines in the past, but it was generally recognized that non-exhaust causes such as abrasion of the tires or brake pads were low. Accordingly, scattering dust generated by exhaust gas has consistently existed in many studies, such as technological progress and related regulations, but research on non-exhaust is relatively insignificant, and the need for research on scattering dust generated by non-exhaust is emerging. In this study, a dust collector that can be easily mounted on a caliper to collect scattering dust generated by pad wear during the brake operation of an automobile was manufactured. In this study, we developed a dust collector that is easy to mount on calipers to collect scattering dust caused by pad wear during brake operation of automobiles. According to the installation of the manufactured dust collector, the performance of scattering dust by brake operation and the temperature change characteristics of calipers according to the structure of the dust collector were evaluated.

Computer Simulations on the Thermal Behaviors of a Friction Pad in High-Speed Train Disk Brakes

  • The thermal behaviors of disk-pad braking models has been analyzed for a high-speed train brake system using the coupled thermal-mechanical analysis technique. The temperature distribution, thermal distortion, and contact stress in the disk-pads contact model have been investigated as functions of the convective heat transfer rate. The FEM results indicate that multiple spot type pads show more stabilized thermal characteristics compared with those of the flat type pads for the increased convective heat transfer rate. The maximum contact stress for a friction pad loaded against a rubbing disk was occurred on the edge of the pad at the disk-pad interface.

  • When the brakes of a vehicle are applied, large amounts of heat are generated on the surfaces of the brake discs owing to friction between the discs and the brake pads. A high temperature gradient on the disc surfaces leads to thermal deformation and severe disc abrasion. Ultimately, the thermal deformation and disc wear give rise to a thermal judder phenomenon, which has a major effect on the stability of the vehicle. To investigate and propose a solution to these problems, thermoelastic instabilities under applied thermal and mechanical loads were analyzed using the commercial finite element package ANSYS by considering the contact surfaces between the discs and pads. Direct-contact three-dimensional finite elements between the discs and pads were applied to investigate the disc friction temperature, thermal deformation, and contact stress so that the thermal judder phenomenon on the surface of the disc could be predicted.
