  • We develop a novel immersed boundary (IB) method based on implicit direct forcing scheme for incompressible flows. The proposed IB method is based on an iterative procedure for calculating the direct forcing coupled with the momentum equations in order to satisfy no-slip boundary conditions on IB surfaces. We perform simulations of two-dimensional flows over a circular cylinder for low and moderate Reynolds numbers. The present method shows that the errors for estimated velocities on IB surfaces are significantly reduced even for low Reynolds number with a fairly large time step while the previous methods based on direct forcing failed to provide no-slip boundary conditions on IB surfaces.

  • In this paper, we consider an impulsive nonlinear second order ordinary differential equation with nonlinear three-point boundary conditions and develop a monotone iteration scheme by relaxing the convexity assumption on the function involved in the differential equation and the concavity assumption on nonlinearities in the boundary conditions. In fact, we obtain monotone sequences of iterates (approximate solutions) converging quadratically to the unique solution of the impulsive three-point boundary value problem.

  • This paper extends some well-known system theories on algebraic matrix Lyapunov and Riccati equations. These extended results contain two point boundary conditions in matrix differential equations and include conventional results as special cases. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived under which linear systems are stabilizable with feedback gains derived from periodic two-point boundary matrix differential equations. An iterative computation method for two-point boundary differential Riccati equations is given with an initial guess method. The results in this paper are related to periodic feedback controls and also to the quadratic cost problem with a discrete state penalty.

  • In this paper, we study the inverse mode shape problem for an Euler-Bernoulli beam, using an analytical approach. The mass and stiffness variations are determined for a beam, having various boundary conditions, which has a prescribed polynomial second mode shape with an internal node. It is found that physically feasible rectangular cross-section beams which satisfy the inverse problem exist for a variety of boundary conditions. The effect of the location of the internal node on the mass and stiffness variations and on the deflection of the beam is studied. The derived functions are used to verify the p-version finite element code, for the cantilever boundary condition. The paper also presents the bounds on the location of the internal node, for a valid mass and stiffness variation, for any given boundary condition. The derived property variations, corresponding to a given mode shape and boundary condition, also provides a simple closed-form solution for a class of non-uniform Euler-Bernoulli beams. These closed-form solutions can also be used to check optimization algorithms proposed for modal tailoring.

  • In order to check the validity of nonlinear normal modes of continuous, systems by means of the energy-based formulation, we consider a beam with a nonlinear boundary condition. The initial and boundary e c6nsl of a linear partial differential equation and a nonlinear boundary condition is reduced to a linear boundary value problem consisting of an 8th order ordinary differential equations and linear boundary conditions. After obtaining the asymptotic solution corresponding to each normal mode, we compare this with numerical results by the finite element method.

  • Some nonlocal boundary value problems which arise from a feedback control problem are considered. We give a precise statement of the mathematical problems and then prove the existence and uniqueness of the solutions. We consider the Dirichlet type boundary value problem and the Neumann type boundary value problem with nonlinear boundary conditions. We also provide a regularity results for the solutions.

  • Many lubricated systems experience boundary, lubrication condition during operation. However, the friction and wear characteristics of boundary lubrication are not clearly understood. In this work the factors which affect the friction and wear between boundary lubricated metallic surfaces are investigated. Experiments were performed on atuminium, copper, and SM45C with bearing ball using a pin-on disk type tester. The experimental conditions were determined by Taguchi experimental method. From the experimental results, the major factors that influence the friction and wear characteristics of boundary lubrication could be identified.

  • In this paper, we consider a mixed boundary value problem to a class of nonlinear operators containing p(x)-Laplacian. More precisely, we consider the problem with the Dirichlet condition on a part of the boundary and the Steklov boundary condition on an another part of the boundary. We show the existence of at least three weak solutions under some hypotheses on given functions and the values of parameters.

  • The existing code which solves two-dimensional RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations and 2-equation turbulence model equations was modified to enable numerical simulation of various supersonic flows. For this, various boundary conditions have been implemented to the code. Bleed boundary condition was incorporated into the code for calculating wall mean flow quantities. Furthermore, the boundary conditions for the turbulence quantities along rough surfaces as well as porous walls were applied to the code. The code was verified and validated by comparing the computational results against the experimental data for the supersonic flows over bleed region on a flat plate. Using the newly modified code, numerical simulations were performed and compared with other computational results as well as the experimental data for the supersonic flows over an oblique shock with a bleed region.

  • An analysis of the flow within supersonic turbine cascades is necessary to design and manufacture turbo-pump system. Because of the differences between the specified inlet boundary value and the computed inlet value caused by the far field inlet boundary condition, the computations at desired inlet conditions can not be achieved. So, this paper studied the problem occurred when far field inlet conditions were specified as inlet boundary conditions. And the numerical analyses using Fine Turbo, CFD Program, has been performed and compared with those of experiments when a converging-diverging nozzle or a linear nozzle was located in front of cascades instead of the far field inlet condition.
